The Maze Runner (2014) Review | FilmGamesEtc
Yet another movie has hit theatres based on a young adult novel. The book this time is based on a trilogy (of course) which begins with The Maze Runner written by author James Dashner. This movie adaptation is director Wes Ball’s first feature length film and he manages to create a compelling sense of mystery as he introduces us to Dashner’s post-apocalyptic, sci-fi world. The film opens very strongly with Thomas’ (Dylan O’Brien) arrival via underground elevator into The Glade. His discovery of this new world is complicated by his loss of memory and the questions raised by his new environment and fellow prisoners/lab rats. Ball starts off with a lot of energy but can he navigate the many tropes of the young adult genre and reach a satisfying conclusion?
