Caffeinating the games industry with spin-offs
AWESOMEoutof10's Andy Astruc knows that the constant deluge of sequels is sometimes exhausting, not to mention boring. Thankfully, spinoffs have a way of reinvigorating franchises long drawn out. "At the heart of every sequel there is a conflict of emotion. That game you really like is being given an extended life, as if the gods themselves have acknowledged your fealty; more of everything you love is coming back, and maybe it’s even bringing along a few new surprises. But it might ruin the entire series, changing too much or too little. You want more of the submarine missions from the first game, but the fan next to you hated them. Multiplayer is being added. Favourite characters are triumphantly returning at the cost of their neatly closed story arcs."
