Updated: Sony has reportedly pulled the update from their servers, so users are no longer prompted to download the software which was causing the issue.

Reports are coming in that updating your PlayStation 3 to the v4.45 system software is causing major problems for some owners, if they have a hard drive installed that's 500 GB.

Supposedly, installing this update in those circumstances "bricks" your system, making it non-operational. Multiple users who have installed this update have reported that their machine is stuck on the boot-up ribbon screen.

The update isn't knocking out everyone's PS3, but forum posts on the official PlayStation website show this scenario isn't isolated.

The update is supposed to make it so you can disable trophy notifications, but it's clearly having some adverse side-effects that were not intended by Sony.
