The 90s to the early 2000s is considered by many to be the “The Golden Age of the RPG” simply because so many companies wanted to shake-up the “turn-based” and “decisive” combat formula that we had come to know so well by the release of Final Fantasy VI and Dragon Quest IV.

I’d rather save the name-dropping for actual articles, but Xenogears and the SaGa series are all fine examples of sticking it to convention. But for all the Parasite Eves and Lufias out there, there are also the Shin Megami Tenseis and the Secret of Evermores. And then, somewhere in between Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, there is Live-A-Live, perhaps one of the most iconoclastic RPGs you have never heard of." – Maxwell Coviello
