Gateways! (exclamation mark and all) is the fourth entry of this year’s Indie Games Uprising III. From developer Smudged Cat Games, Gateways! takes all the physics and puzzle fun of Portal and compresses it into teeny-tiny Super Mario Bros. 8-bit platformer format and surprisingly little is lost in the transition. The gist of things is that you are Ed, some sort of mad scientist who wakes up to find chaos has erupted in his labyrinthine lab. It’s your job to guide Ed safely out of his laboratory using his, well, let’s call it what it is—his portal gun—and a host of other gadgets and power ups while avoiding enemies, hazards… and OSHA Safety Compliance Inspectors (I’m kidding about that last one).
