For that matter a pc even top of the range will take few hours to render one frame of an object in a scene let alone a full scene. A typical graphic rendering workstation costs upwards of 4000$ and they would require 100s of them in tandem to render a scene in lesser time.

I think the reply was more in response to both companies Sony & Microsoft both claiming we will shortly see Avatar quality graphics on their consoles.

It's just another company pointing out how ridiculous the gaming industry is with the constant lies they use to sell their products.

That's odd, whenever I watch Avatar I think "James Cameron should make games". The medium would be perfect for him.

Just look how much effort and passion he pours into creating that world? If it was a game, you could explore it!

Just look at the 2 dimensional moral dilemnas the characters are faced with? Those could actually be really thought-provoking in a game!

Just look at the grace of movement and agility the characters possess? Those could make for really fun play in a game!

Instead we got a re-telling of an old Disney film. And please don't mention the tie-in game.

All avatar was, was a long tech demo. The plot was recycled rubbish, the characters had no depth, and I was bored throughout. Plus the world wasn't really that amazing, it's just lots of world from other films merged together.

The difference between David Cage and Cliffy B is that Cliffy B makes games that are unequivocally GAMES. David Cage makes... something else. Call them interactive media, choose your own adventures, or whatever you like, but they are not games in the traditional sense. And I stand by my "unnecessary shot" at his poor writing and ability to tell a coherent tale. Many, many other people agree with this assessment.

The problem is that if you reduce a game to QuickTime events and minor exploration, you'd better be damned sure that you can tell a compelling story that is satisfying and makes sense. A traditional game can get away with a lackluster story because the mechanics of the game are the attraction. I'm sorry, but pressing different directions on an analog stick to operate and electric shaver is not compelling enough to me to consider that act "good mechanics" that will make me overlook bad writing.

Back on topic, it is obvious to everyone that takes a sincere look at David Cage that he wants to make movies, or narratives structured like movies. Unfortunately, he does not have the self-or outside editing necessary to make the stories coherent. James Cameron does. In the gaming world, since Cage is the antithesis of that, he became the go-to comparison for me. I don't care if Heavy Rain and Beyond sold 50 million copies - it wouldn't change the fact that he has issues directing which keep him from greatness.

Was it still an unnecessary shot, or have I explained myself to you well enough now?

IN YOUR OPINION. In the end Heavy Rain sold millions and received critical acclaim despite not being a "game in the traditional sense" and despite having "poor writing" and a "non-coherent tale." Many, many other people may agree with your assessment, but many, many other people disagree with it. Once again call me when YOUR game sells a million and gets PRAISED by GAMERS AND CRITICS alike.

I don't expect Avatar like graphics for another two generations. I think current system can render at about late 90's CGI in real time in a closed room. With that said I do think this generation is a bit of an let down in terms of graphics. The X360/PS3 graphics blew me away, the jump from N64/PS1 to XBOX/GC/PS2 blew me away, this generation while yes looks better, but not a big jump from last gen. I'm interested in seeing third generation software, by that time developers should be done with making current gen games compatible with last gen but with higher res textures and display resolution.

It's possible the leap is just as substantial but we're all a bit more jaded now. Not only are we harder to impress but some seem to reveal in NOT being impressed.

Some games are impressive like Infamous and Ryse, but beyond I'm somewhat disappointed. I think all manufactures went too conservative on their hardware, but I understand they wanted to minimize losses on hardware unlike last gen. Probably why last gen was such a big jump, we're buying $450-800 worth of hardware for $300-600 at launch. This generation we're buying $370-470 worth of hardware for $400-500. Well I'm sure the graphics will balance itself out, but I doubt this gen can last 8-9 years like the last gen.

Yeah the motion capture on those cars is outstanding. They really captured the emotions and thoughts in the expressions on the bonnet. You can almost believe the 1million odd polygon cars possess a soul, it's that lifelike.

The title is misleading.... Geez... they were talking about a tech used for MOVIES -- for FACIAL CAPTURE/ANIMATIONS ... the actual question and answer from the interview:

Rashid Sayed: Do you think the new consoles PS4 and Xbox One are capable enough to produce movie like quality facial capture?

Seth Steiling: While the gap in fidelity is narrowing, film remains a much more flexible platform for photo-real CG than games. A single, film-quality frame can take from minutes to hours or even days to render, so the dream of Avatar in real-time will require hardware that is a couple of orders of magnitude beyond what’s currently top of the line.
Major advancements in scaled GPU rendering are making final-frame post-visualization possible, but only with dozens of top-shelf GPUs pushing the render. Furthermore, film-quality facial animation is the byproduct of not only super powerful processing and advanced rigs and solvers, but huge teams of animators perfecting motions in post on a scale that most game developers just cannot afford to invest in.

Based upon this response, home PCs can't even do what they do in the movies -- certainly, not at anything approaching affordability.

Avatar movie quality graphics is a LONG WAY OFF for all computers including both high end pc's and all consoles. There is not a single computer, regardless of price, that can render games with Avatar quality graphics with realtime ray-tracing in 4k with 60 frames per second. Maybe in 15-20 years...
