CVG - Why I Love... Dark Souls

CVG - The Souls games (both Demon's and Dark) are monuments to loneliness. They generate it, incubate it, and then, when the player's feeling like the last human being in existence, they feed off it. Both games' ruined churches, dilapidated townships, and cavernous tunnels only get larger as you play, their depths empty but for the clank of your own armour off the sweating walls and the faint rustle of things couched in the dark. (Dark Souls, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

This game is the first true RPG I've played in a LONG time. FromSoftware definitely needs to keep this up.

Agree but their next game they need to make the bosses like Demon Souls and give them a puzzle vibe. That was the only think that disappointed me was the boss fights, going from puzzle esque bosses of demon souls to hit dodge repeat. Also take out either poison or toxic (leave one of course) but those stacking is just completely broken and unfair.

I think everything about Dark Souls was perfect. No need to change any of the mechanics. Can't wait to see what FromSoftware comes up with next.

Would defo like puzzles in dark souls! Would change things up and give a nice break from combat. Would like them to make the more common enemies harder though. They just become a waste of time after a while...

Dark Soul is an great game but i think that Demon Soul was better.
The changes in gameplay in Dark souls, to me were steps in the wrong direction

pyromancer did not need to be its own class.

Dont get me wrong, Dark souls is an amazing game and i love how the franchise handles the sword Combat(best in videogame history to me) I just think that classes, Magic and Heath & magic recovery were handle better in Demon Soul. Also the online is significantly worst to me in Dark Souls, I did not like having to buy my innovations i miss the stones from Demon Souls.

PS:

I hope Soul Sacrifice is a new game in the soul franchise, imagine using the vitas rear touch panel to swing, Hold R or L and slide your finger down to swing down or up to do a uppercut, it would be so amazing

There are strong facets I like about both games. Most of it I find relatively equal, but there are a couple of standouts.

I like the bonfires and sprawling continuous map better than the Nexus and hubs (gives the world a broader feel). I like how they trimmed down the upgrade system and added an actual reason to use heavier gear (though I hate the practically-standard Dark Wood Grain ring).

I like the variety of weapons in DkS but unfortunately have yet to discover one I find truly satisfying. For whatever reason, I absolutely *loved* the Meat Cleaver in Demon's Souls, but thus far I haven't quite been able to capture the same enjoyment of massive weapon + careful timing = smashing *insert enemy* into the ground. Although my first character was more dex-oriented...

PvP seems more irritating in DkS with the over-use of lagstabs, BB glitchers, and the like. I'm absolute garbage at PvP in these games, but in Demon's Souls I could win usually 2 out of 5, maybe more like 3+ when I used the Meat Cleaver.

In the end, it's hard to say. Both games are quite, quite excellent.

Puzzles would be good in a game like this. I would love to see a proper jump button and add a tiny bit of platforming.

Agree the bonfires and map were an improvement, the level design for dark souls is amazing. The bonfires also mean a quick turnaround for refilling estus, repairing or just general grinding without having to load the nexus then reload the world.

Half (or 75%) health was better in demons though, more incentive to be alive. I also prefer estus to the food, I generally just traipsed around with 50+ full moon grass. Estus at 10 was probably too much, 5 with kindle to 6-7-8 would have been enough, especially with estus+7.

I'm being over-critical tho. Both games are genius.
