A breakdown by gaming groups determining if the Kinect is worth the money or not. Families, parties, casuals, and core gamers each get suggested games and we look at a possible Kinect 2.0 with the 720.
As a core gamer I would say no as a cool add on that expands the use of 360 I would say yes.
Nobody cares if "it works or not", it's the new popular must have and it's selling craploads, can't go against that...
This article is a day late and dollar short...
Who wants to pretend their hand as a gun? Cmon is this 3rd grade PEW PEW PEW
Love Kevin Butler.
True enough regarding the gun, but when you do sports or dancing in real life you don't hold a controller, so Kinect is bang on the money with those genres.
My 360 sure isn't crying over not having this worthless camera attached to it. the 150 i saved not buying this crap went to something better and more useful, and like someone said below if i want to exercise I'll go outside or use my exercise equipment.
"Is The Kinect Worth It?" That depends ENTIRELY on what type of games you like to play.
Exactly. That's why I break it down in the article like that.
Asking "Is Kinect worth it?" on N4G is like asking a grown man if they would be satisfied with a McDonalds Happy Meal. The answer will almost always be the same.
LOGIC If you offered a grown man a Happy Meal they'd snatch it so aggressively that they'd nearly take your arm off. So it's not really comparable.
Everyone knows the a Happy Meal is all about the toy.
All I have to say about this is Star Wars kinect...nuff said.
The games and kinect work for the kids now as it's their generation growing up. It doesn't work for us as 20 odd year veterans, so let the young ones discover the "now" games in 20 odd year's time. Does that make sense?
From what I have seen so far. The Xbox 360 Kinect is surely a wonderful innovative piece of tech. From the looks of it there is still much potential power undiscovered, and I am looking forward to watching videos of what it can bring to the table in the future. So far what I have seen done with industry leading racing sim Forza 4, Mass Effect 3, and Ghost Recon Future Soldier have been amazing to say the least. In the future it would be nice to see kinect integrated into every title found on Microsofts current and future machines. Rated E For Everyone
I don't know if I'd say the Mass Effect 3 Kinect abilties are amazing. We know the voice recognition on the sensor is good but I found myself saying the commands on ME3 two or three times before they'd work. Same thing on Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.
NO! A $500 million ad campaign push 18 million Kinects in homes but they are now collecting dust because 99% of Kinect games sell past 300k. The Kinect defenders talk about how good Gunstringer, Rise of Nightmares, Child of Eden, and Huant are but none of them actually bought them considerign all of them flopped miserably selling well under 300k. The biggest budgeted Kinect game, Kinect Star Wars, recently released and sits on Metacritic with a 56 average score which will scare away 60% of the core gamers and the dance mode has already scared away the other 40%. So that leaves Kinect Star Wars fate squarly in the hands of kids of uninformed parents. It's not looking good. You can only create an on rails or dancing in place to match the character on screen type games with Kinect and the on rails games have been proven to have noticable game affecting lag and that just won't cut it with gamers.
Saying that Microsoft's $500 million ad campaign is the only reason that Kinect has sold well is just as stupid as saying that the only reason the PS3 is having worldwide success is because of its price drop.
u need less bubbles bro.
Wow, logic is really losing these days.
Just because it had 500 million thrown at it dose not make it a over night success. Windows phone 7 had the same amount of money when it came out yet it was not an over night success. For me kinect is a big part of ms future on consoles and pcs. We have seen some of the things that have been done by developers on kinect and the more people play around with the device the better it will become. Kinects biggest problem on the 360 is it was made mid gen so not all developers are going to use it because not everyone with a 360 has one just like the wii motion+ and the ps move. I think once the next xbox is out and it ships with the xbox from day one alot more developers will integrate it into there games. But if you sit back and look at some of the games like tiger woods child of eden forza 4 steel battalion you can see developers are starting to think of ways of adding the device into there game and for me im all up for developers opening there mind to any new devices that are brought in to help on gaming.
Windows phone 7 wasn't a success because they launched that in a phone era dominated by Google and Apple. With Kinect, it was the only controller"less" adaptation to be pushed to the mass market. So you're study there is a little flawed.
I'm curious as to where you get your numbers from, because I've been able to find no official numbers for anything that your saying. I bought all the games you listed and for the most part like them all. The only numbers I could find that were legit were the ones saying Kinect Sports was like at 4+ million and Dance Central was over 2 million. I also saw something recently saying Fruit Ninja Kinect had over 1 million downloads. I think that is pretty successful, even though Kinect Star Wars isn't doing great on Metacritic, it did have a ton of pre-orders and will go platinum with ease. Kinect has only been out 15 months, that isn't a very long time and for it to have 4, 5 or 6 games that have gone platinum on what many consider a gimmick is a huge success. I can tell you've never used a Kinect, let alone play the titles that your listing because Haunt, Rise Of Nightmares and Kinect Rush aren't on rails at all. Its as foolish as the idiots saying Kinect Star Wars is a bunch of mini games, when its actually story driven and quite a large game. I find it funny that you say things aren't looking good for Kinect, I'd be curious as to what you think of Move, which is far behind Kinect in every category and to the best of my knowledge no Move only game that wasn't bundled has even sold a million. I'm not uninformed and I'm not a kid but I own a Kinect and I'm very happy with it. It can be used for more than gaming, it can be used to talk to family, friends across the world, it can be used to control anything over XBL and its great for gaming. Even the simple things like the voice commands for Mass Effect 3 are very well done, I cant count how many articles I heard from whining people because they felt left out, no matter how many times they heard that Kinect has its own voice recognition software and basically did the work for Bioware. Anyway, I can see why you sport only two bubbles, good luck with the trolling in the future.
Account created 17 days ago. Hi IM_KINECTED/NOTICEABLY_FAT. My comment struck a particular loyalty nerve?
Nice comeback kiddo. You accuse me of being someone else, yet ignore everything I said. Well played, well played indeed. I'll take that as a win in this debate, when the opposition cant even work up a rebuttal you know you've done something right. I know when someone is just trolling or making things up, anytime you want to prove you have a Kinect shoot me a message here and I'll send you my XBL Gamertag and we'll work things out there. Till then, it was nice slapping you around here. Keep making up numbers, its classy!
Yes and no, ha just contradicted myself. It is worth it for those who find the worth of having it based on what they paid for. And there are those who find a lack of worth. Overall the worth lies in the individual, not the product.
Not really. I guess if you're gonna have a huge party and want that dancing game. But otherwise? Well I DO wanna complete my trimount. Already got my sensor bar and PS eye.
ive got both a ps3 with move & a 360 with kinect comparing the two i have used me kinect more than my move mostly use it for voice commands & i feel i have gotten more of my moneys worth out of kinect even though it was a gift lol. But is it worth it is the overall question? No imo its not!
Do you want to miss out on Jutekki and Crimson Dragon? I sure as hell don't!
I asked the same thing a few months ago and got my ass chewed off. The comments here seem to be a lot more sensible so far.
I guess. In the same way the Nintendo "Virtual Boy" was worth it.
Depends who's asking. But for the most part no....no it is not
I actually think the Star Wars dance portion redeems the whole game for simple laugh factor alone.
