Is The Kinect Worth It?

A breakdown by gaming groups determining if the Kinect is worth the money or not. Families, parties, casuals, and core gamers each get suggested games and we look at a possible Kinect 2.0 with the 720. (Kinect, Xbox 360)

THILLREBORN  +   826d ago
As a core gamer I would say no as a cool add on that expands the use of 360 I would say yes.
sikbeta  +   826d ago
Nobody cares if "it works or not", it's the new popular must have and it's selling craploads, can't go against that...

True enough regarding the gun, but when you do sports or dancing in real life you don't hold a controller, so Kinect is bang on the money with those genres.

My 360 sure isn't crying over not having this worthless camera attached to it. the 150 i saved not buying this crap went to something better and more useful, and like someone said below if i want to exercise I'll go outside or use my exercise equipment.

"Is The Kinect Worth It?"

That depends ENTIRELY on what type of games you like to play.
Cennus  +   826d ago
Exactly. That's why I break it down in the article like that.
LOGICWINS  +   826d ago
Asking "Is Kinect worth it?" on N4G is like asking a grown man if they would be satisfied with a McDonalds Happy Meal. The answer will almost always be the same.
deep_fried_bum_cake  +   826d ago
LOGIC

If you offered a grown man a Happy Meal they'd snatch it so aggressively that they'd nearly take your arm off. So it's not really comparable.

The games and kinect work for the kids now as it's their generation growing up.

It doesn't work for us as 20 odd year veterans, so let the young ones discover the "now" games in 20 odd year's time.

Does that make sense?

From what I have seen so far. The Xbox 360 Kinect is surely a wonderful innovative piece of tech. From the looks of it there is still much potential power undiscovered, and I am looking forward to watching videos of what it can bring to the table in the future.

So far what I have seen done with industry leading racing sim Forza 4, Mass Effect 3, and Ghost Recon Future Soldier have been amazing to say the least. In the future it would be nice to see kinect integrated into every title found on Microsofts current and future machines.

Rated E For Everyone

I don't know if I'd say the Mass Effect 3 Kinect abilties are amazing. We know the voice recognition on the sensor is good but I found myself saying the commands on ME3 two or three times before they'd work. Same thing on Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.
StrongMan  +   826d ago
NO!

A $500 million ad campaign push 18 million Kinects in homes but they are now collecting dust because 99% of Kinect games sell past 300k. The Kinect defenders talk about how good Gunstringer, Rise of Nightmares, Child of Eden, and Huant are but none of them actually bought them considerign all of them flopped miserably selling well under 300k.

The biggest budgeted Kinect game, Kinect Star Wars, recently released and sits on Metacritic with a 56 average score which will scare away 60% of the core gamers and the dance mode has already scared away the other 40%. So that leaves Kinect Star Wars fate squarly in the hands of kids of uninformed parents. It's not looking good.

You can only create an on rails or dancing in place to match the character on screen type games with Kinect and the on rails games have been proven to have noticable game affecting lag and that just won't cut it with gamers.
LOGICWINS  +   826d ago
Saying that Microsoft's $500 million ad campaign is the only reason that Kinect has sold well is just as stupid as saying that the only reason the PS3 is having worldwide success is because of its price drop.

Just because it had 500 million thrown at it dose not make it a over night success. Windows phone 7 had the same amount of money when it came out yet it was not an over night success.

For me kinect is a big part of ms future on consoles and pcs. We have seen some of the things that have been done by developers on kinect and the more people play around with the device the better it will become. Kinects biggest problem on the 360 is it was made mid gen so not all developers are going to use it because not everyone with a 360 has one just like the wii motion+ and the ps move.

I think once the next xbox is out and it ships with the xbox from day one alot more developers will integrate it into there games. But if you sit back and look at some of the games like tiger woods child of eden forza 4 steel battalion you can see developers are starting to think of ways of adding the device into there game and for me im all up for developers opening there mind to any new devices that are brought in to help on gaming.
Fylus  +   826d ago
Windows phone 7 wasn't a success because they launched that in a phone era dominated by Google and Apple. With Kinect, it was the only controller"less" adaptation to be pushed to the mass market. So you're study there is a little flawed.

I'm curious as to where you get your numbers from, because I've been able to find no official numbers for anything that your saying.

I bought all the games you listed and for the most part like them all.

The only numbers I could find that were legit were the ones saying Kinect Sports was like at 4+ million and Dance Central was over 2 million.

I also saw something recently saying Fruit Ninja Kinect had over 1 million downloads.

I think that is pretty successful, even though Kinect Star Wars isn't doing great on Metacritic, it did have a ton of pre-orders and will go platinum with ease.

Kinect has only been out 15 months, that isn't a very long time and for it to have 4, 5 or 6 games that have gone platinum on what many consider a gimmick is a huge success.

I can tell you've never used a Kinect, let alone play the titles that your listing because Haunt, Rise Of Nightmares and Kinect Rush aren't on rails at all.

Its as foolish as the idiots saying Kinect Star Wars is a bunch of mini games, when its actually story driven and quite a large game.

I find it funny that you say things aren't looking good for Kinect, I'd be curious as to what you think of Move, which is far behind Kinect in every category and to the best of my knowledge no Move only game that wasn't bundled has even sold a million.

I'm not uninformed and I'm not a kid but I own a Kinect and I'm very happy with it. It can be used for more than gaming, it can be used to talk to family, friends across the world, it can be used to control anything over XBL and its great for gaming. Even the simple things like the voice commands for Mass Effect 3 are very well done, I cant count how many articles I heard from whining people because they felt left out, no matter how many times they heard that Kinect has its own voice recognition software and basically did the work for Bioware.

Anyway, I can see why you sport only two bubbles, good luck with the trolling in the future.

Nice comeback kiddo. You accuse me of being someone else, yet ignore everything I said.

Well played, well played indeed.

I'll take that as a win in this debate, when the opposition cant even work up a rebuttal you know you've done something right.

I know when someone is just trolling or making things up, anytime you want to prove you have a Kinect shoot me a message here and I'll send you my XBL Gamertag and we'll work things out there.

Till then, it was nice slapping you around here.

Keep making up numbers, its classy!
edonus  +   825d ago
Your logic is extremely flawed. The 500 million budget was for years of ads and games like budgeting for an entire console. The games not selling is less an issue with kinect as it is motion controlled gaming. Look at how well Just Dance sells and Dance Central and Kinect sports. The games you mention are geared at more core gamers and the core gaming culture is to hate kinect. Not to mention they dont lose money on those games because they cost little to make. that why you dont see Gears of War graphics in kinect games.

Your comment about Kinect Star Wars is exactly the problem with the industry right now. The reviews of Start wars kinect are lies and part of the hate kinect culture so it being 56% on metacritic is like ofcourse and it will scare away lots of core gamers (sad because the game is actaully really deep). But what they are hoping is that with the custom console the ad campaign and the license they can make sell against the hate kinect culture. If they succeed in selling over 1 million that will be the start of them setting up a new market of kinect gamers that will buy complex kinect games. That will render the culture of gamers that hate kinect obsolete. Then they can build and market core gamesto them and just consider the others a lost cause.

Your last paragraph is the lies and foolishness of hate kinect culture that shows why MS need to build a new market. You say those things that are completely false and have no desire to find out if it is true or not.
rezzah  +   826d ago
Yes and no, ha just contradicted myself.

It is worth it for those who find the worth of having it based on what they paid for.

And there are those who find a lack of worth.

Overall the worth lies in the individual, not the product.
Smashbro29  +   826d ago
Not really. I guess if you're gonna have a huge party and want that dancing game. But otherwise?

Well I DO wanna complete my trimount. Already got my sensor bar and PS eye.

ive got both a ps3 with move & a 360 with kinect comparing the two i have used me kinect more than my move mostly use it for voice commands & i feel i have gotten more of my moneys worth out of kinect even though it was a gift lol. But is it worth it is the overall question? No imo its not!

Damage to what or whom? It's a movie series from my childhood. At least that's where I think I left it? Kidding aside Star Wars is not that important to me anymore. So I'm able to laugh at these cash grab games for what they are. Cash grab games.
Godmars290  +   825d ago
Its sad that after four years of hype and nearly two of actually being on the market that people have to ask that question.
Tai_Kaliso  +   825d ago
Honestly I think its worth it. You can find them for like $99 and I'm sure the official price will drop down to that this year full time.

The reason I personally believe its worth it is because I've gotten a solid amount of use from it. I own the following Kinect titles and with the exception of a couple of them, I've had an absolute blast.
1.Kinect Sports 1 and 2
2.Dance Central 1 and 2
3.The Gunstringer
4.UFC Trainer
5.Child Of Eden
6.Rise Of Nightmares
7.Kinect Star Wars
8.Kinect Rush A Disney Pixar Adventure
9.Haunt
10.Fruit Ninja Kinect
11.Sonic Free Riders
12.Your Shape Fitness

I think I've got the chance to play a variety of different types of games and all have worked pretty well.

I have Fable The Journey and Steel Battalion on pre-order and of course I'm looking forward to Crimson Dragon, which is the spiritual successor to Panzer Dragoon.

I've also enjoyed the Kinect features in Halo CEA, Mass Effect 3 and Forza Motorsport 4, the Auto-Vista feature is so fun.

So if you can pick it up for $99 than there is more than enough to keep you busy no matter the type of gamer you are. Lets not forget the voice controls and gesture controls for the XBL dash and Netflix, Hulu and everything else on XBL now.

I'd suggest it to pretty much anyone that likes gaming and tech.

been playin xbox since 2002 and i gotta say kinect is crap. why would i want to wail my hands instead of just push right on the dpad? why would I want to say "xbox.....bing........hal o". when i could just push A?
Serously, a headset cant let you speak voice commands????
I love the controller. I prefer MOVE over kinect.
I'm not a fan of Kinect. never will be, never will support it if I was a kid id rather play outside with my friends than play kinect.

edonus  +   825d ago
I sure you dont have a kinect.

Even in your example when you say "xbox...bing... HALO" you couldnt just push A. You would have to hit search then go through the process of typing in HALO. Just saying it is way faster. A headset would work fine if you want to walk around wearing it whether your searching something on youtube, watching a movie, browsing netflix or video chatting.

You are a product of the culture that has made it acceptable to hate kinect with out even knowing its abilities. Shame on them and your loss.
MissAubrey  +   825d ago
your right I dont have a kinect(wouldnt waste my money) a friend of mine has one and all it does is collect dust ive tried it, its not fun. I dont see the point of it. Its unessecary. I know its capabilities and its a lame gimick. no loss on my part. same thing for my wii it was fun for a week and now it just sits there. motion controls in a game are a burden

The same way I knew you didnt have kinect thesame way I know that as a core gamer if you went out and played lets say Star Wars Kinect and really learned it, I'm talking beat Jedi Destiny not on easy so you have to really learn and use the moves, and in Duels of Fate get to fight Darth Vader your attitude towards kinect would be completely changed. Those challenges would let you experience how core kinect can be. You would be so impressed that you would go back and try out other kinect games with more patience and sense of discovery. Or continue thinking its a gimmick and miss out on some great innovations... you can miss what you aint never know.
edonus  +   825d ago
Kinect is a great device. It expands your systems functionality and works really good.

Kinect is a success and will be around going forward. It has good games on it that offer some great experiences.

The only problem kinect has is the gaming public with its blind hate towards kinect. This hate has hindered the speed of its growth but its acceptance is inevitable.

This is why I wish the gaming journalists would just stop reviewing kinect games. Because if you dont do it right you hurt the industry. Motion gaming is here and doing great things but the way these guys are half assing on their reviews you would think it hasnt progressed or is a gimmick or is childish.

Thats why I hated the reviews for Rise of Nightmares so much. They didnt play it to understand it to give devs feedback on what could be improved. And now Star Wars kinect... the reviews have not offered any feedback on what they could do to make Kinect Stars part 2 better.

They have built a culture of hate for kinect to were they dont even have to play the game. Kinect Star War has really deep gameplay... In the reviews they tell you about one third of what the game does and say its bad... fact is they have played it like your grandmother reviewing Uncharted.

Basically Kinect is extremely worth it.... dont trust anyone that says different.
Hicken  +   825d ago
Wow.

So, if I haven't enjoyed my time with Kinect, and I say so, my opinion isn't trustworthy.

But you, who have nothing but praise for it and wouldn't notice a flaw if it was lodged in your rectum, your opinion is trustworthy?

The only time I've enjoyed Kinect is in party setting, where I and my friends have been drinking. And, honestly, that's the only way I can see getting ANY use out of it. And, even drunk, I still feel ridiculous waving my arms around or running in place.

I'm 27. I want to exercise, I go to the gym or hit the basketball court. Kinect's got NOTHING that will be better for me than ACTUALLY getting out there and doing the stuff.

There are quite a few problems with Kinect, from its inaccuracy to its lack of a killer app, and other things. There's a decent amount of lag (I was drunk and I could still tell), and some of the requirements for room size and color of clothing are pretty bad, too(one of the reasons why it hasn't done well in Japan, aside from Microsoft generally tanking there).

You like the Kinect? Fine. But don't act like people who don't are just arbitrarily hating it. That makes you look like a fanboy, which it's hard to say that you aren't.
