Why Is The Nintendo Wii So Successful?

One of the hottest products this holiday season in the Nintendo Wii. But Why? It was only 24 months ago that CE had written Nintendo off as a had been player in the games market.

Sony and Microsoft designed their new PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles to maximize the dedicated gamer's experience with flashier graphics and controllers with more buttons for increased precision.

Nintendo's focus seems to be more on gameplay. The gamble to focus on this aspect of gaming really seems to have paid off for Nintendo.

PRICE & Unique gameplay(Wii-mote)

Kudos to Nintendo for producing an * EVOLUTIONARY * console allowing it to be cheap and have that uniqueness to be considered over the next gens.

This is what Sony needs to do with the Ps4 - produce an evolutionary console without * REVOLUTIONARY * components as well as their own better version of the wii-mote so they can sell it cheap and also cover the niche wii gameplay market.

I will always keep championing the EVOLUTIONARY approach. I prefer to buy a new cheap US$200 console every 4-5 years than wait 5-7 years and fork out $600.

Obvious really.

1. is cheap
2. it have the Nintendo brand on it
3. have a gimmicky control that make you think (casual gamer) is the ultimate experience in gaming when in fact it doesn't.

Slowly, people are starting to realize point 3, since sales for the other consoles increases every week while nintendo's stay still or going down little by little

The Wiimote is *NOT* gimmicky. The controls for some games are, but that's not the controller's fault (and I expect controls to get better as time goes on). The pointer functionality, motion controls, and form factor make things possible that just can't be done with a standard controller.

Is it the best controller for all games? Absolutely not, but diversity is a good thing. I'm not sure why so many hardcore gamers are threatened by people having options. Stick to your Xboxs and PS3s. Really, we don't mind.

1 simple fact:
It's focus on casual games.
Price is not the reason because if it was, many people wouldn't pay $500 to $1000 for it (And in some cases more than $2000). It's just the Wii craze in US and most of the world and people just want to have it.
I wish PS3 or 360 were the must-have, craze center consoles instead of Wii but life's not fair.

QuackPot5980d ago (Edited 5980d ago )

The casual gamers are the ones who have and are buying the Ps2 at the moment.

Cheap and fun(due to huge library of quality games).

Although the Wii doesn't have the huge library of games it still has that fun factor with the wii-mote centered games.

Revolutionary or Next-gen consoles are always expensive and take a while for the price to drop and a library to be built up.

Those casual gamers will eventually start to pick up the Next Gens but again...when the price is right and the huge library of games is achieved.

EVOLUTION not REVOLUTION....is the way to go

KUDOS again Nintendo.

You've got valid points but I can't like Wii. I just can't. A true gamer should love and play all games and consoles and while I love Wii games like Metroid Prime 3 and Zack & Wiki, I honestly can't bring myself to like Wii. (As for family fun, it's indeed a blast. Playing Rayman Raving Rabbids with others is easily one of the most fun gaming experiences I've had in a long time).

Wotbot5980d ago

who aren't gamers are buying it. And they have more or less secured the the casual market.

And the Wii is a lot of fun when you are with the family.

The outcome for this generation of consoles is looking more and more interesting. It's good business for everyone.

WilliamRLBaker5980d ago

regardless of the game its fun, I've spent more time since I got mario galaxy and links crossbow training then I have playing 360 or ps3.

Eamon5980d ago (Edited 5980d ago )

1) Original Motion sensing and aiming added gameplay

2) Cheap price and Simple design

3) Advertisements are perfect since it perfectly appeals to hardcore and casual

4) New innovative ideas like Wii Play with free wiimote, Wii Fit with free Balance Board, Link's Crossbow Training with free Wii Zapper.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron - Coming Back for a New Generation

Originally launched in 2011, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is coming to Nintendo Switch, so It's time to look back at the original.

Still have my ps3 copies. Bought it at launch and another one when I found it cheap and in perfect condition about 10 years ago. I wouldn’t buy it on Switch but if they made a PS5 version I would. I still have one of my PS3 Fats hooked up so good to go either way.

darthv722h ago

Id play it again on the switch. I wished my 360 version was bc but this is still a good way to play.

Fallout 3's Reveal Led To Death Threats And Bethesda's First Security Guard

The artist behind Fallout 4’s Deathclaw reveals just how bad things got back when Bethesda took over the series

anast4h ago

People are stupid I get it. No one should feel unsafe,

But I think they need to talk about why they cut so many corners during the development process and why none of their games ever look current. And why they think all of this is okay while they charge full price.

LucasRuinedChildhood4h ago

As much as Bethesda deserve criticism, that's not really relevant to the reveal of Fallout 3 in 2007.

VenomUK1h ago

The default angle Kotaku always go for is to highlight the worst in gaming.

I would’ve focused on the creative.
