GameFly Digital PC Client Open for All Subscribers
GAMElitist.com - "GameFly has seen fit to release its digital client to the masses (of GameFly subscribers) rather than keeping it exclusive to only those with beta codes."
(GameFly, PC)
I was in the beta for the program and wasn't that impressed, most of the free to play games are really old or family/casual. The most recent major games were Saints Row 2, Assassin's Creed, and older Red Faction games.
I recently dropped gamefly after 3 years since I finally am caught up on my console backlog and unless they significantly improve the unlimited play PC offerings it wouldn't matter to me as a reason to re-join.
Steam, with its insane sales, is the only PC game marketplace I really need and the weak free game lineup in the Gamefly Digital Beta wasn't enough to even warrant me kepping it installed on my PC while I had full access to it.
Another Steam wannabe bites the digital dust 1. The Buy section was OK but steam has almost everything and Steam has cheaper prices and daily sales.
2. The Rent or unlimited play section was GARBAGE! Steam has only 17 free to play games but ALL of Steams are better than anything Gamefly has just about. Steam F2p section gets bigger every week.
3. Will keep an eye on Gamefly to see if they improve but so far Steam is all i need.
I do agree that the current PC rent selection is poor (still in BETA status) but at the same time shows A LOT of promise. If gamefly continues to improve its PC selection (buy / rent) this can be a very serious competition for steam. They have the capital to expand.
Having a one stop shop to buy / rent my PC / console games is a welcomed addition. Combine your membership discounts + gamefly $ + great gamefly sales would be very hard alternative to ignore.
We all know GFWL / Origin clients are horrible alternatives to steam. OnLives future is still in the up in the air.
Majority of the games that are available are free are old, however dear god im going to love to be able to play assasins creed at work on down times, right now all i have is an SNES emulator, hell even ps2 games would have been welcome to me, im excited!
One thing that GameFly has stressed is that the PC Client and Unlimited PC Play are intended to be freebies. As in the value of a GameFly subscription has gone up without any cost to the subscriber.
I don't think they mean to bite into their used games business by offering current, big name games for free. Expect older titles and indie stuff that will never make it to retail.
The selection will get better over time but it will always lag behind other platforms.
