Joystiq: "Red Faction: Armageddon has signaled the end of not just a familiar red planet, but an entire, transmedia universe."
haha the *RED* faction series is *DEAD*, i guess its time for a *REVOLUTION*
Yeah, Red Faction is dead because THQ killed it. The last entry in the series was boring and bland. It was nothing like Guerilla. It's too bad too, that series could have had a bright future.
I'll be honest, I loved the other red factions simply because it was open and you could destroy almost anything. The biggest problem with the newest red faction is that I really don't remember seeing anything about it. I mean, I heard the name. But I didn't see hardly any media coverage at all, almost like it didn't even exist. I'm sure the added effect of what everyone else is talking about... (closed world, boring, bland) had something to do with it too, but I really didn't even know it was out until I seen it at the store and was like, "Where did that come from?"
The series died out to me when they switched it from a fps, i use to love playing with bots on red faction 1
Guerilla was good, but I'll still take game 1 any day. It was immersive to the max and had fun challenging gameplay. I'd kill to see that game remade on a modern engine.
to all the people asking why it went tps.. i thought that the cheap fuckers used the saints row engine, and didn't have to splash out on a new engine for rf.. hence tps rf! guerrila was a good game though... shame. if my feelings are right, then thq have no one but their sorry cheap selves to blame! first off they let kaos ruin homefront especially the multiplayer, when frontlines multiplayer was great, now this! kaos only had to improve upon frontlines multiplayer, and homefront would've been great on-line. wasted imo
my thing is why did you go away from red faction's open world and so much to do and stuff. Some times things don't need to be changed look at red faction i played this latest one and it was a good game 1st half but than the difficulty jumps so high towards the last 25% of the game it becomes un fair give us the fed faction HD remake and so sad to see a good series end but its THQ's fault
Red faction used to be an awesome FPS with destructible environments and mechs, which was impressive for PS2. So the Red Faction series died well before Armageddon.
I agree. The original red faction was incredible.
I have no idea why they switched the franchise to TPS,. As much as I liked Guerilla, the first 2 games were amazing, and for the time, so was the destruction.
what a pathetic ending to a great game. guerilla was an awesome game but they really effed it all up with the second game. repedative linear gameplay along with no competitive multiplayer??! seriously wtf. i bought guerilla on launch date as for armagedon ive yet to pick that shit up and doubt i will cause of the lack of competitive MP. their greedy asses thought we were all stupid enough to buy w/e garbage they pump out just cause we bought the last one.
The makers of the first game should help out Lightbox studio with the next Warhawk/Starhawk sequel for PS4 (I know starhawk isnt out, but they finished it.) Now they should work on the first E3 warhawk trailer to make it a reality (hundreds of warhawk fleets everywhere! The next MAG 256+ players. Agree or Disagree if you Agree
Well obviously. What were they thinking with Armageddon?
Too bad really, Guerilla was amazing.
I agree. Guerrilla was a blast. One of my favorite and in my opinion underrated open world games out there. The destructibility in the game was awesome. Couldn't find the door to get in a building? No problem, just make yours right through the wall! I have yet to pick up Armageddon. I played the demo, although I enjoyed pinning things and blowing shit left and right, it didn't have that Guerrilla openness where you could jetpack onto the 3rd floor of a building and smash a sledge hammer right in the face of an EDF soldier.
Ya I just bought Guerilla, I really liked the demo I played. It's on sale right now for $10 on the PS Store if anyone wants to buy it.
Agreed, rabid. It was horrid. The destruction was great in concept but man it just didn't feel right. Plus, the graphics were better on Splinter Cell Double Agent. I mean, no stubble at all on his head???
I agree, guerilla was awesome but the corridor design philosophy of armageddon just didn't fit the destruction focus of the franchise.
No one but THQ's fault. Red Faction - great innovative new game back on the PS2....all a sudden they go 3rd person and change stuff. And they wonder what went wrong, especially after Armageddon
I absolutely loved Guerrilla, but I hadn't been following any news about Armageddon.
So, when I started playing the demo, my first thought was...yeah, this is alright, but when do we get off these rails and out into open world...you can imagine my disappointment, when I figured out they had dropped open world
Deleted the demo and didn't even consider renting it.
I think they were thought they could cash in on the Dead Space gravy train, and switch from fighting an oppressive mega corp / government to the aliens / monsters.
gomu gomu no PISTOL!!!
Get with the times, it's all about the jet pistol now.
sorry man I'm only on ep 116!
Shame that the TV series etc never came to fruition
its dead because of thq just like smackdown
shame, although i have not played the last one, i did enjoy the one before that. All I will say is I hope they do something with that amazing engine they built. There have been a few games that talked a lot about destructible environments, but in my book it was red faction that delivered more then any of them. I would love to see it running on the next generation of consoles. Imagine Saints Row with every building, we are talking the whole city being completely destructible. I mean a massive full on city like that. they were great games, it was just the story that needed work, but what a great engine it ran on.
The first two were amazing games. After that I lost interest. I don't think it suited 3rd person as much although I'm glad they did try with all the FPS we have now days.
THQ is dead
THQ uses shitty game marketing - IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!
Won't be gone forever. They'll be able to do some ridiculous destruction on future tech.
Ridiculous destruction doesn't mean shit, when the game sucks.
More like "Rest In Pieces!" GEDDIT?! Coz of the destruction, and the breaking of stuff and.... But truly sad. I LOVED Guerilla, so damn fun, was practically Just Cause 2 before Just Cause 2 came out. Dunno who thought they should go from awesome open world to limited corridor shooter. Stupid decision, and now they're paying for it. THQ also canned Stuntman series, that game was awesome too!
hey I have an idea y dont we make the whole game like a big fkin dungeon/fail
hey THQ. perhaps its a niche because you've yet to release one with the same quality and not to mention same genre as the game that started it all. i dont understand why no FPS red faction was released this gen. missed opportunity
it's niche because it's not a great concept. thq needs to come up with something that's all around amazing and their own if they want to survive, cuz they way i see it they don't have any viable franchises that they (and we) can rely on. maybe they can turn saints row into one, but everyone knows that originally it was just meant to be a gta clone.
the original, the second,...Saints row and especially Volution prodution always lack one thing polish! If its not the framerate its the screentearing, bug fest .....
I would like to see an old type red faction (FPS) using the geo mod engine!
The games were all great fuck all the haters they wouldn't know how to design a game if their lives depended on it!
I loved all the Red Faction games, but they took Armageddon in a terrible direction. They cut out the MP, which was amazing and not tacked on in any way in RFG, and made the game more linear. R.I.P. Red Faction :(
:( A sad day for destruction
THQ is on a roll!
For starters, this series should never had gone 3rd person.
Next: Red Faction: Resurrection
nah "Red Faction :Zombies" first then Resurrection.
The best Red Faction game was the first one, which when I found out it was made by THQ I was surprised since they usually only made wrestling games. Red Faction is dead and THQ killed it by going too far from where they started.
I feel sorta bad for the devs. They had so much fun making this game. Its a really fun game, its just that there isn't a big enough audience for this since everyone is concentrated on the biggies like MW3, BF3, etc.
y didt' they do somthing like just cause 2?
or like Mass Effect just go back to earth.
It's been dead to me ever since the 2nd game came out.
You wanna know why this series has failed?
cause the idiots over at THQ never made a proper sequel to Red Faction. All four games in the series were completely different in game play and the core story.
so basically they made 4 entirely different games and slapped the Red Faction title on them.
Red Faction = Solid FPS with destruction, some vehicles, great enemy A.I. and a great story of the evil Ultor corp.
Red faction II = Became a twitch shooter and basically was a rip off of Quake and some crap about super soldiers (further ripping off Quake)
Red Faction Guerrilla = 3PS with Destruction in an open world environment but now the EDF are the bad guys.
Red Faction Armageddon = 3PS linear shooter with a focus on rebuilding stuff instead of destruction. No Ultor No EDF
If they just would of taken RF and continued the story of evil Ultor Corp and added a whole new adventure the series would of been fine. I find it sad that the game that made me buy a PS2 will never have a proper sequel.
I really loved Guerrilla and i tried the demo for Armageddon and i didn't enjoy it. I didn't like the underground atmosphere. They should have stuck with the open world surface of mars and included all the new weapons and stuff from Armageddon. Oh and got rid of those dumb aliens jumping on walls. Hated that. The Franchise really had potential after Guerrilla. It's a shame.
The only good thing about this is that we might see their destruction engine used in other games that could use it.
So was Guitar Hero and we've already heard they are bringing that back...Give it 5-6 years and Red Faction will return. It took a bit from the original games to now anyways.
No fucking shit! When you derive from what the game series originally was and make four different stand alone games to try and milk the franchise, you get just that. A dead game franchise!
Either we get another one with open world or a reboot by a better developer with something new and a new publisher I don't want red faction to die its my fav franchise for real time destruction and needs a second chance for redemption
What a crappy game with crappy graphics. I'm not sad to see it die.
Red faction 1 was the best, its been down hill since then.
Guerilla changed it all -terrible story -boring world that looked like Arizona -fighting just humans It really was boring an missed the feel of the originals
Red faction 1 felt like it was taking the FPS franchise somewhere new making great use of the geo mod, It pretty much succeed at what it set out to do. RF-2 was too linear imo but it at least had the RF feel, Like you said Guerilla changed it all...
i just hope someone who has a passion for the franchise and takes it over and reboots it into something better back to its roots
Excellent job THQ. Armadedon was fun but not reaaaly what fans wanted, still you ignored fans and managed to make a pretty good game. Then after that you ignored the fans of Red Faction Armageddon too who enjoyed the multiplayer in particular. What you had at the end was something no one wanted.
After the disaster that was Armageddon all I can say is good ! I'm happy it didn't get huge sales, but I would've liked it if they brought the series to it's roots.
Some games are as big of morons as the 90% of the gaming journalists themselves & that's pretty pathetic!
cant say i care to much
I tried the demo for armageddon....awful and boring...if you are going to copy dead space...use a better engine
