Resident Evil: Retrospective
The Resident Evil series has all but died a death now in a traditional sense; many games carry on the franchise in title only. The newly announced Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon city is predominantly a third person co-operative shooter, sharing more in common with the likes of Gears of War and Left 4 Dead than canon Resident Evil games, while Resident Evil 5 – albeit a very good game – became nothing more than a Hollywood action blockbuster.
While Resident Evil 6 has been promised as a total reboot for the franchise, the search for an archetypal Resident Evil experience seems likely to go on for a long time (although the 3DS exclusive Resident Evil: Mercenaries has the potential to surprise). With that in mind, we have to remind ourselves of what the fuss is all about and why everyone is clamouring for that undeniable fear to return to our gaming sets.
