SFGate: Killzone 2’s violence chaotic but simple – Review
Killzone 2 has been a long time coming, ever since the infamous 2005 E3 trailer stirred up debate over whether the footage shown was playable or just a target render. Four years is a long time in gaming, and looking back at that trailer today, it’s ironic that the final game actually looks better than the initial footage detractors (correctly) dismissed as too good to be true. More importantly, it’s clear that developer Guerrilla Games has captured the sense of no-frills chaos shown in that first video, and, going even further back, finally delivered on the promise of the first Killzone in 2004.
So is this Sony’s long-awaited Halo killer? Not exactly, if only because the first-person shooter playing field has become so fragmented. Halo remains a powerhouse to be sure, but you could say the same about the Call of Duty series, and it’s not a stretch to include the third-person Gears of War as well. Suffice it to say that Killzone 2 would have made a more than suitable counterpoint against Gears of War 2 in November.
