This what happens when you don’t give a price cut to your 7+ year console

JEECE1430d ago

Lol but now used and refurbished PS4s are selling above retail price, with Pros fetching almost $500 on eBay (which to be fair, is happening with all consoles at the moment).

Generally I agree with you though, PS3 got more frequent and more definitive price cuts. Even when Sony has good deals on PS4, it's usually a bundle deal, and whenever it ends or goes out of stock, the console itself on Amazon etc will sometimes cost more than the bundle did. I certainly would not have expected that the MSRP for a standard PS4 would only drop $100 by this time (granted it is a slimmer console with a bigger hdd now, but still).

RpgSama1430d ago

Funny thing is they're only comparing the American market, they should do one with worldwide numbers and see what happens, lol.

JEECE1430d ago

I mean, the whole reason to compare these numbers is that it is interesting, and that wouldn't be.

RpgSama1430d ago

@JEECE

I would find it very interesting.

SpineSaw1430d ago

Umm don't you mean that this is what happens when a broken product is released and the same consumer's are not smart enough to not purchase the same broken product over and over 3, 4 and 5 times over?..... Just asking we all know this is why you were trying to say.

CobraKai1430d ago

Wow. Comparing the PS4 sales to 360? It tells me that the One was a colossal failure. The fact that my One is packed up in the closet but my 360 is still connected also shows that

xer01430d ago

I'm not even sure what picture this comparison is meant to paint.
But any way you look at it, it looks bad on Xbox.

Stanjara1430d ago

It paints lifetime of a product.
X360 was most successful Microsoft product. But, we see that sales have declined in the same period as PS4, even thou overall it sold 1.24m units more.
Tlou2 and Ghost can bring that number closer by the end.

These are also USA numbers where Xbox is dominant, and has most of it's market share but Xbox One trip to PC changed that picture.
Also their content.

DEEHULK881430d ago

If Xboxone is a colossal failure, the SNES is as well because the sales are close. Vita is a colossal failure.

JEECE1430d ago

I don't actually think XONE was a colossal failure- MS has one real market they are a significant player in, they sabotaged their own launch, and they're still going to sell 60ish million. 360 was artificially boosted by Sony's many mistakes, having a year head start, and having the games media basically advertising for them for the first few years of the generation.

However, your comparisons don't benefit you. SNES came out at a time the industry was smaller, so success has to be considered against that. And despite being a capable machine, I don't think anyone debates Vita being a sales failure.

Sunny_D1430d ago

@jeece

Let’s not forget to account the highest failure rate of any electronic the 360 was. The amount of people who had to buy multiple 360’s account for that number.

CobraKai1430d ago

Hahahaha. Don’t even compare One to SNES.

DEEHULK881430d ago

Can't really say the 360 was artificially inflated by anything unless you have proof. Yeah i got rrod as well and the just sent me another console and that does not count as a sale. I bought another when elite came out. You could make the case that the original Playstation sales were inflated by faulty drives the you had to flip the system over to make it work. Many people had to buy new ones because the drive died. They won the UK as well last generation. A year head start wouldn't really mean anything because those people could just wait a year until the console that they want comes out. No one is forced to buy a console just because it came a year earlier. I have both systems so I really don't care and I still play my one x more regardless of its "bad sales".

JEECE1430d ago

@DEEHULK88

1. I agree with you. Despite RROD being a big deal for a few years, I never cite it as a significant portion of its overall sales. As you say, people often got replacement consoles free or got a refurbished one. Also, it's not like everyone bought multiple 360s; some got fed up after RROD and switched to PS3. So if I start factoring that in how it caused people to buy additional 360s, I also have to factor in how it benefitted PS3. It's easier just to ignore it. Plus when you mention RROD, people (cough cough) will always cite to some far less significant issue with a different console, like how one of their friends had two different GameCubes get struck by lightning, so he had to buy three. It's easier just to assume failure rates contribute some to all console sales and be done with it.

2. As far as my other points, maybe "artificially" was not the best word, but what I mean is that there were outside factors benefiting 360 that did not benefit XONE. Sure, people can wait for the console they want, but anyone with common sense can see that it's better to be on the market first. If you can't understand that 360 benefitted from being out a year earlier than PS3 in a way XONE did not (because it launched near simultaneously with PS4), I can't help you. You don't have to cite sources for common knowledge.

3. True about UK, I tend to look at Europe as a whole though.

4. My whole point is that XONE did not have bad sales. I'm saying 60ish million considering MS's mistakes as well as their position in the international market is pretty good, and just calling it a failure by comparing to PS4 or 360 is pretty short-sighted.

Minute Man 7211430d ago

According to M$ they sold about 50 million consoles

Minute Man 7211430d ago

@ Sunny

They same could be said for the PS2.

Even if people had to buy multiple consoles why was more games sold on the 360? Not saying you are wrong, because I had the RROD. I also had a defective PS2...... It happens

darthv721430d ago

@sunny, from my own personal experience, I only had to buy multiple PS1 and PS2 because there was no extended warranty program for those unlike the 360 which I did get repaired for free. PS1 i had to buy new when I got tired of flipping the old one upside down to play and then later got the PSOne with the LCD. And PS2 had the dvd laser die (I could still play CD media though) so I ended up getting the one with the IR built in and it came with the HDD adapter but then later got a slim because it was smaller (but I still have my fatty with a 320gb hdd in it). I still have my 05 launch 360 though that still works. i dont use it much anymore since i use a 360 slim that a buddy gave me.

JEECE1430d ago (Edited 1430d ago )

Lol Minute Man 721 comes in, as if on cue, with a "Gamecubes struck by lightning" story. Which as I said, that's why you don't attribute significant 360 sales to RROD, because someone will always have some "but my PS2 broke after my brother threw it down the stairs, and I had to buy a new one" story. Looks like darthv72 had some consoles destroyed by lightning as well.

No one can really account for how much a failure rate contributes to any console's sales, so it's pointless to try to use it to explain away sales. Besides, many of my friends who started on 360 switched to PS3 after RROD. That's anecdotal evidence, of course, but I highly doubt they were the only ones.

DEEHULK881430d ago

JEECE,
You make some good points.

I keep both hooked up. 360 I use to dl the GwG titles and then I dl those to the SAD in the living room.

As to your choice to pack up the xbo... that's your choice so nobody can tell you otherwise.

JEECE1430d ago

It also doesn't really make sense because there's a pretty great chance that most of the 360 games he's playing are playable on XONE, and in several cases they probably play better via BC (not to mention Master Chief Collection if he's still playing Halo games).

Now that my Gamepass has lapsed, I don't have anything on my XONE except 360 games. To be fair, I never owned a 360 though, so there's that.

CobraKai1430d ago

There’s still 360 games I’m still playing that aren’t backwards compatible. Why keep one console plugged in that can play some of the games I’m playing when the console the game is designed for can play ALL the games. Plus when I bought the OG One, I wanted to play One games. I didn’t spend $500+ to play select 360 games.

Welshy1430d ago (Edited 1430d ago )

It reminds of a kid in a school yard who's smaller than another kid using the "my big brother could beat you up!" card.

Joking aside, what a bizarre comparison this is. Sales of a current gen console that hasn't stopped selling yet vs a last gen system that isn't being sold anymore in 1 specific region?

technophobia1427d ago

Agreed. A bit of cherry-picking in action. Would love to compare apples to apples. Each generation has its own economic climate and context. Either you show all consoles from each generation you want to compare or stop this click-bait BS.

Games That Were Bad on Release, But Are Now Great

BLG writes, "Some of the most popular games have had a rough start, with some of them being downright unplayable.

Despite that, developers have managed to turn it around for them and make their game worth playing. Here are some games that had a rough start but were pretty great."

Good list..hoped to see Street Fighter 5 there..and it is.

Vits10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

Sea of Thieves... I'm not disagreeing that the game has improved in terms of content. But I feel that the most significant change between now and its release is actually the public perception. Nowadays, most people are aware that the game is a multiplayer PvP-focused experience first and foremost, and not "Black Flag made by Rare". Consequently, people dismissing the whole experience because the single-player aspect is lacking or the story is plain are much less common.

darthv728h ago

Several years ago, i submitted an idea to Rare that would change up the mechanics of battling opponents in the game. whereby if you died in battle, you turned into a skeleton warrior and had to fight your way back to the land of the living. It was an interesting twist on respawning and would allow the player to experience both sides of a battle.

I keep hoping to see something like that get added to the game.

They consider FO 76 & ME Andromeda to be great now 🤭

It's sad that this quick retort is more often than not true... The industry's acceptance of release and patch has gone too far.

WRATH: Aeon of Ruin review - Games Asylum

Games Asylum: "It seems reasonable to suggest most people have a preferred takeaway establishment. The one that you always find yourself coming back to, much to your waistline’s despair. Should that takeaway temporarily close, you’ll doubtlessly have to expand horizons and go elsewhere. Sure, the food from a second choice might be palatable, but it’s never the same, lacking in zest. This analogy can be applied to the 3D Realms published WRATH. It’s powered by a modified version of the Quake engine, and even plays like ID’s masterful shooter at times, but it’s lacking that all important crunchiness. It isn’t completely soggy, but there’s not much bite either."
