Giantbomb - "Assassin's Creed: Unity is at once an object of exquisite beauty and exhausting boredom."
The real ouch was the wasted money loyal fans of the game spent for a day 1 copy. This is a well deserved score IMO. This was a total slap in the face to ac dwindling fan base. I was a fan I platinumed ac2 BH...but I no longer felt like an assassin after I played ac3. And never beat a ac game since. Too much focus on not assassinating but navel boat riding exploration just pushed me away from the game. That said this mess of a game and the yearly drops making this game worse and worse on top of the parity and the major issues the game released with...just goes to show just how far these devs have fallen.
Try 4. It makes up for 3 being a bad game.
I must disagree. For me, the story in 3 easily tops 4. In addition you recieve your first introduction to a traitor to the Assassins. You also actually had to train to be an Assassin. In AC4 you put on the outfit and magically you became an Assassin. Later on you train on the island but that was a little too late. It was almost frustrating that you were forced to take babysteps on things you already knew how to do. Also Kingthrash360 stated the naval activities pushed him away. And as we know in 4 it was all about the navy versus 3 where it was present but to a far less degree. I agree with thios score as well. On my scale a 5/10 is a medicore game and this title is easily below that mark. If anything they were too kind.
I think Kenway is the best AC protagonist. He started off as a gold hungry pirate. He didn't have to save the world and could of sold the key to the observatory. As for naval combat, i looked forward to hitting the high seas and collecting bounty to build my ship (not a boat) to take on the legendary ships and take down the forts. He deserved his place (although accidental) in the Creed. EDIT: I will admit i was peeved at the person controlling Kenway not having a voice or face like Desmond, Still my Favourite AC game and looking forward to Rogue next year.
GiantBomb giving a score like that is brutal. One of the few sites I half-way trust.
I've played every AC game(2&4 being the best). I wish Ubisoft had waited another year for Unity to get it right and just given the new gen an upgrade of Rogue like they did with 4.
This is not deserved and this is why. If we hadn't had an SC game in 2-3 yrs, it would be welcomed. It is gorgeous and I feel like there's alot to do. The problem is that we have done it so many x. What the series needs is more rpg elements and an almost arcade batman type of combat. You spend so much time, and while it's better than its ever been with the leveling etc...alotll of the games have felt like u never get better. It needs to tell a simple assassin story in which u start like ezio as an arrogant idiot, who through tragedy etc. learns to become an assassin. This is where rpg elements come in. Offer 3 different types of assassins...brute, stealth, and ranged. It could be brilliant, almost in a Bioware way. In this way, ot would grab u. Introduce compelling characters u can recruit, actually recruit. The world is big enough to be a full fledged rpg...and by the end u will feel like u give a damn.
You blame SC for the reason AC having issues? Two different teams, different directors. If The Division has issues will you blame H.A.W.X?
This game can eat shit and die classic duke style lol :D
A giant bomb was dropped on the target that is Halfassins Greed.
Ubisoft screwed up big time. They deserve all the criticism. Also really good review. Alex Navarro is one of my favorite reviewers.
exhausting boredoom? well duh, I wonder why people didn't see this coming, I realized this from the very first moment they set apart from the Black Flag formula and going back to its horrible roots.
Assassin's Creed I think has replaced COD as the most over-exploited franchise. Brotherhood was the last one I touched, and I only touched it for an hour...
Only played brotherhood for the awesome multiplayer, which they then changed and ruined in my opinion.
Yeah I mean I liked the AC games I played. 2 just took 20 hours and I mentally couldn't get into jumping into Brotherhood which picked up immediately after 2. Then I got so far behind in the series I said F it.
The only problem is that COD is evolving
yet MCC gets glowing reviews. How embarrassing for the game review profession
What does that have to do with anything? MCC has some server issues which are being fixed. THIS just doesn't work right at all.
-MCC has problems, but its being fixed -Unity has problems, but its being fixed whats the difference? Ive put like 30 hours into Unity. I would have played MCC instead, but oh yeah, I literally cant.
4 out of 10 seems extremely harsh. Glitches or no. The gameplay is solid, whether or not you enjoy the tried and true Assassins creed formula is another story entirely. Im all for being objectively critical when it calls for it. However this score seems a bit off. Ive seen far worse reviewed better. Thats in no way me defending the shortcomings of this particular game... But where do you draw the line?
giantbomb doesn't use the 5-star rating anymore?
Giant bomb is the one website I really trust with reviews.
Assassins Creed 2 was the best, it's a shame they couldn't improve on that.
They tried so hard to copy the formula with this game.
The games not that bad, all this hate is severely unwarranted towards the game. People are so blinded by the problems they have with Ubisoft that the subconsciously reflect them on their products. Countless number of gamers have been playing them glitch free, yet I suppose thats not newsworthy enough.
My hatred isn't because of UBISOFT. My game just doesn't work. Frame rate issues. Bad Popins. Bad AI. Clipping everywhere. Lack of control of Arno. Glitches everywhere. Crashing. Getting stuck in objects. Having to restart. All this in 3 hours. I uninstalled it. Complete waste of hard drive space. This did not take 4 years with 10 studios.
What system are you playing it on? I don't have any framerate issues on PC. The texture LOD changes on NPCs can sometimes be noticeable, but they aren't that big of a deal, most of the time I don't even notice. The controls feel BETTER to me as a whole. I feel more in control than ever and have no problem doing what I want to do in the game. The only glitches I have had have been related to NPC pathfinding, getting stuck or having them slide around a bit. Not very frequent and doesn't really bother me in the grand scheme of things, although of course I would love for it to be improved if possible. I haven't had a single crash on my PC. To me it sure looks like a game that lots of time and effort was pored into. If you are playing the console versions, I am sympathetic about some of the issues with those versions. But I have also heard lots of console players say the problems aren't nearly as bad as some say and they had no problem enjoying the game. It's really the CPUs in the consoles that are causing the performance issues in this game. We can see this quite clearly when we look at the CPU benchmarks for the PC version: http://gamegpu.ru/images/re... The AMD processors continue to fall far behind Intel's. But the problem isn't due to lack of good multithreading because other benchmarks show good core utilization on both AMD and Intel CPUs. http://gamegpu.ru/images/re... http://gamegpu.ru/images/re...
A lot of bitxhin and tears from this site. He opened the flood gates for sure.
I'm amazed at the flurry of negative reviews for ACUnity. Don't get me wrong, it's not very solid in a technical sense, but I didn't suffer anywhere near the level of a ballpark 4/10 review score. From start to finish on PlayStation 4 I fell through the floor 6-7 times and noticed FPS drops on a few occasions. Was it up to par with other AAA games? Nope. Did I expect more from Ubisoft? Yup. Would I mark an otherwise solid game at 4/10? Oh please.
You just said you fell through the floor 6-7 times. In this generation with a veteran franchise, this should happen zero times. Game deserves this. People overscore games too much these days. First impressions are the strongest and if this is what you decide to launch with, you better be ready.
I was going to purchase this game used due to the parity fiasco but after reading several reviews and watching the gameplay this will be the first Assassins Creed to get a complete pass from me. Now to gear up for GTA 5, Farcry 4 and Dragon Age.
Held out on buying this game for the meantime but was going to buy it soon to try the co-op with some buds but ouch..especially after Black Flag which was amazing in my opinion. Guess I'll continue holding out on this one until I can get it for 29.99 or less.
time to stop making this game every year... they need a 2 year cycle
roflmao this game is 8.5 it next best thing since ac 2 what hell r they smoking yall smoking other then frame dips which will be patched this game is masterpiece hence my 8.5 rating as i speak
Love these reviews.
wait till fc 4 is out it plagued with bugs people rave the hting like its 2nd coming with frame dips n all u watch
Those guys at Giant Bomb are so right, if ac unity had like 10-15 npc's on screen like Second son it could get a 5 star prolly.
Maybe next year.
I preordered the game 3 months ago... (digital) sadly this review is spot on. i didn't learn my lesson with Watch Dogs Good bye Ubisoft
I still have to finish AC BF so I'll give this game time on fixing all its issues.
This game is an alpha still imo. You can't hide underwater You cant take human sheild,or whistle. The combat is the worst bit in the game totally broken, grabbing hold of the wrong ledges is bk with a vengence. Falling through map. The wonkey AI. Framerate issues. Did i say the combats sucks.....geez its bad now. Basically you have to press 4-5 times to get arno to take a swipe then the ai just shoots you (which you have no way to defend against) bam 2 shots ya dead. The coop is fun but the whole game is so fundementaly flawed is hard to belive ubi spent more than a month or two putting this together.. Sure they might patch it but by then we would have all finished it a few times. Ps dont get your hopes up for the division or crew or even farcry 4 coz my bet is they will all be broken crap on day of launch, especialy division...oh yeah rainbow 6 also WILL be broken laggy garbage mark my words. Ubisoft just dont know or dont have the talent to make a stable game, they never could, look at every game over the last 10 years, everyone was/still is broken.
If Rainbow six seige is messed up I swear man, I am going to lose it. Game looks insane.
I remember the demo at E3, man this game looks and plays nothing like that. What a joke Ubisoft has become.
