Analyst: Playstation Will Beat Xbox 360

Whats taking so long? Its been 19 months they should have already caught up and passed BOTH the Wii and 360 based on the success they came out of last generation.

Its no question that the slow build up of momentum is a massive failure on Sony's part. At the rate they are going they'll never catch the 360 in North America and they're lagging behind the PS1 and PS2 is Japan.

You Sony fans should think before you jump on these types of articles and pat eachother on the back. The 360 has already done what it set out to do and Sony made it happen with their stumbles. They should already be on top.

I think the wii is going to slow down dramatically in sales by the end of this year-mid 09. when the ps3 gets a big price drop at christmas the sales are going to sky rocket. wii wont have such a big lead for long, i actually think the ps3 will overtake the wii eventually but only time will tell.

the only reason the 360 has the number it has is because so many people had to return their broken 360's and get new ones.

i personally bought only one 360 but got two more right off the self since i had a Best Buy warranty. i didn't have to send my consoles in to MS when they broke.

i wonder how many other people went through the same thing. i'd be willing to bet that even though there are 17 mil 360's shipped (or sold as MS would want you to believe), only 12-13 mil are actually functioning, working units that people own. i count for three 360's even though i only bought one.

If that were true, the Playstation wouldn't have ever been on top. Nintendo and Sega were on top well before the Playstation. Things change from generation to generation. jack meahoffer does have a point though. and i know it's a bitter pil to swallow for some of the people on here. but sony after the last two consoles should already have surpassed microsoft, and should be closing the gap on nintendo. instead, they have been slaughtered in japan by nintendo, and have been double penetrated in NA...only in europe do they have something to smile about...albeit trailing nintendo month in month out.

no way will they sell anything close to the numbers of the previous playstation consoles. if sony sell over 60mil, then they should be thankful they've done that well. which compared to their previous dominance, isn't really that great, and is a serious fall imo. brand name alone has kept them going so far.

Nintendo isn't in the console war as far as I'm concerned, I don't know ONE PERSON with a wii.. but I am a gamer, and so are my friends. I'm not saying that some of you don't own a wii, I'm not saying that it's not the best system out... well.. yes, I am, it's not the the best system out, in fact, it's not in the same category as the other systems. Why not just include PSP and DS??? I know they are portable, but as far as hardware performance and target audiance you might as well throw them in the mix too. My buddy bought one, realized it was more a toy than a game console, and sold it. Wii is more of a hardware match for the PS2, and let me tell you, They are not gonna outsell the PS2. I was mostly a console players till I went to and finished college during that time. The funny thing was how every one in high school loved consoles yet PC was the next big thing on campus. I could barely find any real console gamers there just PCs and lan party and it was great. Yet it's just deje vu seeing these comments and how a whole group of gamers ignore one system over the other. I understand where you are coming from but part of the problem that PC games had was price and lack of variety in games, which isn't really true yet few games are hyped by certain gaming groups.

Gaming is based too much on hype right now. This is the same thing that got atari to produce all those Et carts. This is the same reason why no one has the cash to buy an 8800 GTS or upgrade their PCs. Hype gets out of control.

Truthfully the PS2 won for a whole mess of reason and MS and nintendo lost because of a few reasons. It takes all types of gamers to win the console war not just nintendo fans, res evil fans, halo fans, etc. It's hard to explain but nintendo is an option for gaming and they are there for the normal gamer that can not afford the best.

A great example is the neo geo vs the snes and genesis. Hell you can throw the PC in there also. Every one wanted a neo geo and we feed the arcade box many quarters yet I knew no one who had one during those days. The graphics totally crushed the other systems and even PC games a lot of times. Yet lots of those games where not that fun to play they where just flames to a moth.

The problem was their will always be more teens than adult gamers that want gears of war or just plain dark for the sake of it and most hardcore adult gamers will grow out of gaming while the teen ranks will continue to grow. These guys do not have $600 most of them are lucky to have a car when they are at driving age let along a real job.

Just look at how people of different ages use their time. K1 to high school is great for gaming yet they don't have HD money this equals large Wii sales. Adults mostly start to see gaming as a toy or either their favorite online game gets crushed by cheaters the lan parties move on or drop out due to having a real life or wanting a family.

The only real mistake the HD console made was pricing them selves out of the market yet they are not really loosing are they? 6 million sold makes you plenty off of royalties for certain games. i don't think they will win this in a fanboys sense this is about making money.

Sorry about the long post but the HD guys need a price adjust and more types of games to bring in more games that want different types of fun. Even the PS2 had the sweet spot of $250-200 for a while. I'm not sure if the full versions of these HD console will ever go that low though.

Every single Analyst so far has predicted that the Playstation 3 will beat the Xbox 360 in the console war and I can really see why because when you consider these things:

100+ million PS2 user base
More 1st Party Publishing
Most of the big PS3 games have yet to be released

After considering those main points above, it's easy to make the assumption that the PS3 will outsell the 360.

And what surprises me the most is that the Xbox 360 is almost the same price as the Wii in the U.S. (the Xbox 360 Arcade is $279), but the Xbox 360 isn't putting up Wii console sale numbers in the U.S. The PS3 continues to outsell the 360 worldwide and the PS3 is neck and neck with the 360 in the U.S. when it comes to monthly sales and even outsold the 360 a few times in the U.S. this year.

Also, Microsoft dropped the price of the 360 in Europe this year and I think that the 360 is now cheaper than the Wii in Europe, but the PS3 still outsells the 360 in Europe. The PS3 has already been projected to outsell the Xbox 360 in Australia by the end of this year if the PS3's sales continue at the rate that they are selling at in Australia.

For the price that the 360 is currently at and for the amount of big game titles that have been released on the 360, it should be selling at much faster rate.

xbox 360 and wii are the consoles to own this generation. I don´t see any reason to get a PS3 when online and graphics are better on 360, Xbox 360 also has a better gaming library and the controller is much much better on 360. The perfect family and friends console is Nintendo wii, which has so much joy to the games and brings you many laughs, Nintendo wii is also unique with its funny controller (wii-mote and nunchuck) which cannot be experienced on any other console. Not to forget that Mario and zelda games can only be experienced on a nintendo console ;).

PS3 got what? HOME looks interesting but it never gets released. To be honest I can only find 1 game that I am really interested in, Little big planet and that is seriouslly it.

The 360 may have more games since it's being released earlier but PS3 userbase is growing everyday, considering Xbox 360 hardware problems and the games that have are also on PS3 or PC. I can play Bioshock on my PC (I might get it on PS3 soon it is released), L4D on PC, Mass Effect on PC. Hell, I can play Gears of War on my PC. But you can't play most PS3 exclusives on PC (ex. The Agency also on PC).

About the Wii, the Wii is a great console to own but after owning for 2 months, playing rehashed games from a long time ago and PS2 ports is getting a little bit tiring. The Wiimote and Nunchuck can sometimes bore you into tears.

I'm not saying they're not good consoles to own but PS3 got one thing different from the other consoles: future-proof.

I love my 360.....however......

The PS3 hardware is superior with built in wi-fi,custom upgradable hdd,blu ray etc

Against it is the fact that the architecture sucks.

The reason i got a 360 over a PS3 was because of Microsofts IP's and its far superior controller - its all about the games.

What few people mention of course, is that its actually Sony who stands to clean up in the games business again for the next few years at least. PS3 is selling well and you'd have to be blinkered to not see it seriously outselling the 360 by the end of the cycle. But of course, Son'y doesn't have all its eggs in one basket. The PS2 continues to shift tons of profitable unset and software and make a tidy profit. Finally, the handheld market dominance of Nintendo has also be broken, much against the predications of all analysts, and the PSP has been a big success and has captured a lucrative share of a market formally completely owned by Nintendo.

Between the three machines they have on market, Sony's gaming business looks like making the most money in the next few years to me.

No one should underestimate the dramatic way in which Nintendo have turned their business around. In aiming at a casual market they've lost me along the way, but the money men are hardly going to worry about that! Their establishment of a new demographic for the business has been nothing short of amazing, but I still find myself thinking it can't remain as successful for ever - time will see!

I wouldn't be surprised if MS were little pissed behind closed doors.
Sure it looks like they will shift more units than they did with the previous generation, but given the huge growth in the market, that doesn't represent growing their market share any, and I think they've failed to capitalize on some real early advantages they had over their competitors. Maybe the renewed emphasis on the casual market and the big push with the motion controls will give a significant spike in their business, but I personally doubt it. Whatever, the 360 is a fine machine with a huge install base and will provide me with great games for many more years yet, but I'm betting it hasn't achieved what they wanted.... Americans want to be winners, and last place won't be what they were aiming for.

I'm a sony fan, i bought my ps3 for Final Fantasy and killzone, both of which were supposed to be out this year. both have been pushed back till '09. same with HOME, but then i was never really bothered about it. I feel let down, good for you if you dont.

As to Jedi Wolverine, the fans on your side are equally as ignorant. i just read some dude in an mgs thread talking about 360 mag giving mgs4 a 6/10 review... throw in MS's RROD issues, disc scratches etc and i think we can both sides do a LOT of PR.

...with respect to the 360 are "hardware" issues. The games kick butt no question and the accessories/peripherals are fine. I stop paying for live long ago so there are no additional cost to consider for monthly fees etc.

However the reliability of the hardware (the unit) is not comforting at all. I've had pretty decent luck with my 360 (only minor issues) BUT I have family members and friends who haven't been as lucky. If MS would just focus on fixing issues with hardware I believe they wouldn't have to keep dropping the price as often as they have and just maybe the console numbers would be up a bit more.

Also it's my opinion that 360 (unit) sales are down because I think that everyone that wants one probably has one by now. The 360 is easier to get/find than the Wii or a specific version of the PS3 in most places so thats good for MS. Depending on where you live you may not have access to as many Wii's and PS3, as you do 360's OR you cant get any of them.

Finally I also think that once you get people to buy enough GOOD games on any system they are/will be invested in the system enough to purchase it again if it ever does fail (inflating the number of units sold). To say PS3 will beat the 360 is an ambiguous title for this article and I like to believe was well chosen to get people to read the article. It's kind of like saying the Dualshock3 on my PS3 rumbles harder then my 360 controller. Depends on the circumstances and criteria I've set to gauge "rumbleocity" (yeah I made that up) but I like many people have already pointed out, the Wii says, "All your sales are belong to us."

Very true the hardware thing is the reason why many want this to happen to the xbox 360. Hell I don't blame them either but many have had the same problems with the PS2. In reality we don't know the real reasons why certain studios only make games for certain consoles so hoping for certain things is like chase imaginary hoops. Yet it took almost two years for the real games to hit the PS2 almost the same for the DS.

What might just happen is xbox 360 RROD owners and people afraid of that will buy a PS3 also just in case or to replace the xbox 360s. Which adds to what you said. Also too your friendships play a big part in what systems you own in the online market now. Certain gamers now follow their friends which makes sense for those gamers but that's not gaming as a whole.

the xbox 360 sales have slowed down yet the PS3 isn't really track that mush higher than the xbox 360 right now. It is preforming like another sku of the xbox 360 which is how most developers are treating it. It's weird but they have a standard gaming console model in front of us right now. Because of this me too factor with look we got some of your old PS2 games is not as big as you think. The PS2 would have tons of different types of games you wanted to play this is not happening with the PS3. You have a nintendo effect where you can replace FPS with mario games and FF with you normal zeldas or what ever. So many PS2 games came out due to the fact you didn't need high end stuff and it ended up being cheaper to make once the middle ware was solved.

Coming out with a Wiimote on both may not help either due to price and the fact that most developer just don't make that type of fun.

The nes used 8 bit tech while everyone else used 16 bit, but you all praised it. PS3 and 360 overshot the average user by being to pricey and having features no one needs (*cough*saturn*cough*). The Wii came in and disrupted the industry. And dont forget a disruptor = crummy product aimed at non-consumers. The nes was aimed at kids "non-consumers" while pcs had epic rpgs and such. And as for casual games what were duck hunt, the nes power pad, etc.? Did these games kill the industry, no the nes evolved up tiers absorbing tarditional gamers. So does the Wii. In the end the PS3 will be seen as sony's last attempt to appear relevent (aka atari jaguar) and the 360 will be none as a console that never had any strength outside of its one territory (aka sega saturn). And the Xbox was just a counter for the Playstation, Playstations threatened to rival PC gaming so microsoft went and created a console that wouldnt destroy the PS but disrupt it enough for someone else to (aka nintendo).

This will not be the last SONY console unless the damage has already been done. They still have support from japan even though the sales over there are really bad. The PS3 could out due the xbox 360 but that's assuming MGS and FF really do bring in sustained spikes. I mean real spikes like in the 100,000s.
