You Can’t Play Mario Kart 8 on the Full GamePad Screen While Someone Else Uses the Full TV

Mario Kart 8 is already shaping up to be the best entry in the Mario Kart franchise. It not only seems to play beautifully, but it looks beautiful too, more than ever before thanks to the Wii U’s high-definition capabilities. But what about the GamePad? It’s supposed to be a big part of the Wii U so what does it do?

Eh? Isn't that one of the big features of the Gamepad and one of it's top upcoming games can't do it.

<sigh>

I think of Iwata saying how they are going to put a focus of making the gamepad stand out yet things like this happen.

ZodTheRipper4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

Ok I read that wrong :D

@DanManDantheMan: The title was phrased differently when I wrote that comment.

@Neonridr: Yes it's more like 10meters and the Gamepad shuts off. I was definately disappointed when I couldn't even use it in my brothers room. On the other hand, I used Remote Play almost without any lag through the WiFi at my work ...which is a few miles away.

DanManDantheMan4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

Yeah, you can do the same thing on your Wii U in Mario Kart 8.

Try actually reading beyond the title next time, which you clearly didn't even interpret correctly either.

Neonridr4082d ago

5m is 15 feet? I would send your gamepad to Nintendo if you can't get that far away. Do you have concrete walls?

As for the Vita, sure you can use it anywhere in your house, but I've tried using it over the internet to connect to my PS4 via my LTE network on my cell phone. Even that isn't fast enough, there is too much lag to actually play a game properly on it. Cool that I can connect to it when I am at work, but it doesn't function properly.

Not all games can do that, look at W101, or ZombiU. Not that this game necessarily needs the gamepad for something else.

FriedGoat4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

@Neonridr, I would send your Vita to Sony if your having problems.

On a Serious note, get a better connection, then Vita remote play will be fine.

I can remote play from several miles away with almost no lag at all. Vita remote play is incredible for me, still blows my mind.
Infact I was playing ground zeroes at work yesterday with almost zero lag, aiming was fine and it looked great.

Chrischi19884081d ago

It is a known and pretty much unavoidable fact, that Vita Off-TV Play over Wifi has input lag, a lag not comparable to the Wii U Gamepad, because the Gamepad is faster than almost all normal TVs people use for console gaming. You might say it doesnt matter, but I think, if I play CoD the 0.15 sec count as winning or losing.

And to these news, they are simply said wrong info. They showed a in split screen mode started race and showed that the off-tv function shows the splitscreen on the gamepad, but they did not show the game menu, where you actually choose, if you want to play in splitscreen or one on the gamepad and one on the screen. What do people expect? That during the race, if the gamepad user switches to gamepadmode, that the TV in the middle of the race, starts to become 1 player and the other one disappears? So much wrong information on this board, just to make the Wii U look bad.

CoD also had this feature, but you had to pick, before the round starts, if you want splittscreen or one on the gamepad and the other one on tv. You could never change that, during a round.

I don't get why this feature hasn't been included. This should have been the number one feature for this game (especially since it could mean 5 player local multiplayer). Very odd

I think this (from the article) is true "The fact that the GamePad is once again not the star of the show here underlies a point made by Neal that I hope to expand upon at a later time: Why did Nintendo bother?" Why did Nintendo bother and why are the bothering still if their biggest game doesn't support said feature. Bizarre. They might as well release a tablet controller free sku if they keep doing this

Neonridr4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

if it supported off screen play, that doesn't necessarily mean that the gamepad is being "taken advantage of". Look at Mario 3D world. Yes you can play it on the gamepad, but it's just a carbon copy of what is being displayed on the TV. Games like ZombiU, W101, Pikmin3 actually use the gamepad for something other than what you see on the TV. Those games are showcasing the uses for the gamepad. Off Screen play is amazing, and I use it all the time, but it's still not quite the same thing.

That being said, I am surprised you can't use it for off screen play, because what else do you actually use the gamepad for? A map? Rearview mirror? -EDIT- nevermind, I see that it is the live standings and a big ass horn button, which is a complete waste

-Foxtrot4082d ago

I know right

The no brainer features that Nintendo keep missing out on is why Iwata needs to go. He promises this and that yet things like this come out which contradict him

We need someone who is going to make sure things like this don't happen in the future.

The Wii U needs all the help it can get why would you not make this feature a priority

No Gamerpad feature for Mario Kart

Online still not up to scratch

Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and Super Mario 3D World being built up co-op games DON'T have online co-op

Lack of third party titles despite them saying once upon a time that they were going to focus on bringing new software to the Wii U....it seems the opposite has happened.

I could go on...Iwata needs to go, his heads not on straight and this problem with Mario Kart 8 proves why he needs to go. It's illogical to not make sure this feature is added when the Wii U needs a lot of help and attention.

Chrischi19884082d ago

@Neon:

Dont try to lecture the haters, they just jump to conclusions pretty fast. There is no prove of what is mentioned.

@Fox:
Jump and Run games were never real online games by the way, why expect this from nintendo, but nobody else? Double standart. Then, the Online works fine, game that have online features, have normal online features, if there is a problem, in games like CoD, with the online, it is the amount of players and not that the infrastructure doesnt work, could you please stop shouting stuff, you just read somewhere on a hater board or at least offer some examples, where the online features of a game are soooo different?

FriedGoat4082d ago

"I don't get why this feature hasn't been included"

I'm guessing that to use the gamepad as it's own separate display might be too much for the Wii U to handle. You've got to think, graphically, mario kart 8 looks quite nice, and the Wii U most likely can't render two different scenes at that fidelity on the TV and on the Gamepad for the second player.

I'm sure if they could do it they would.

ReesesPuffs4082d ago

They didn't add any of these new gamepad features because the wheels of this game were already in motion when Iwata made that statement. It doesn't make sense to delay this game to add features to the gamepad which arguably may not have even added anything to the overall game. They're trying to get the heavy hitters out there ASAP because, if you haven't already noticed, the Wii U isn't doing so hot right now. Iwata probably meant future games will see much more gamepad support. I honestly believe the next Zelda will show what the gamepad can really do.

Concertoine4082d ago

This -neeeeeds- to happen.
Splitscreen is so annoying, playing with a local friend online on two different screens would be so awesome.
I mean COD does it, why can't nintendo, especially with the useless info on the gamepad.

Venoxn4g4082d ago

maybe in later patch, who knows, remember when Monster Hunter 3 ultimate didnt have off tv play at first? :)

Chrischi19884082d ago

There is actually no real prove, that you cant. In the Video it just shows, that you can play both, just on the gamepad, but we do not know the other options, you get in the menus, before the race starts and knowing nintendo, you choose this stuff, before you start your game.

randomass1714082d ago

"I think of Iwata saying how they are going to put a focus of making the gamepad stand out yet things like this happen."

Why do you blame everything on Iwata? I don't think he's a developer on this game. And besides, MK8 was announced long before Iwata stated they would be making games with more focus on the gamepad. Take a chill pill, I don't think this all that big a deal.

-Foxtrot4082d ago

Because he's supposed to be running a tight ship and obviously he can't do that if he says one thing but lets a studio WITHIN his company contradict his statement. He's supposed to make sure that they don't make him look like a liar.

paulcek4082d ago

Not every game needs to use the gamepad though...

A lot of wii games were bad because of the forced motion control waggling...a lot of those games would've been better if they didn't try to implement motion.

Mario Kart is one of the games that don't need motion control or a second screen. I'd rather have a solid MK game than one that forces usage of the gamepad. Off TV play is good enough for me

Though, if Nintendo can think of a really cool way to use the gamepad, I'm down.

Shnazzyone4082d ago

Fucking nintendo trolls. How they make a story out of the fact mario kart 8 uses the tv in local multiplayer instead of the gamepad is beyond me. Who the hell wants to play split screen multiplayer on the gamepad?!

CrowbaitBob4081d ago

"Who the hell wants to play split screen multiplayer on the gamepad?"

The fifth person sitting there watching while his four friends play split screen maybe?

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed does it yet Nintendo's own kart racer can't handle it.

Once again, Sega does what Nintendon't.

DC7774082d ago

Great negative article and responses per usual.

-Foxtrot4081d ago

lol

How is it a negative comment when I'm pretty much stating what the article is saying.

Wouldn't you be more ticked off with the article.

Iwata: We wanna make better the Gamepad's perception.

Meanwhile the Gamepad on Mario Kart 8 it's just a horn.

TripC504082d ago

Has rearview mode, mirrored mode, map, horn, control swap buttons. So it has a little more than just a horn. You didn't get past the picture did you?

Concertoine4082d ago

Wait where does it say it has rearview mode? I would love that.

TripC504082d ago

@concertoine Saw rearview on gamepad in gamexplain video

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory4082d ago

uh Mario Kart 8 isn't a game to showoff gamepad. The NFC are.

NYC_Gamer4082d ago

Why not?Nintendo needs to start making use of that screen on the pad.

evilbart4082d ago

I was so looking forward to playing this on the game pad while my other half watched her tv programs, such a wasted opportunity and why?

TripC504082d ago

You Can still do that. It's talking two player local coop where one person uses the pad and the other person uses the screen instead it shows splitscreen on both the gamepad and the TV.

evilbart4082d ago

Oh well the title is a bit misleading then.

elhebbo164082d ago

Oh please is not a huge deal, the game still looks aesthetically pleasing anyways.

Smashbro294082d ago

It is my understanding the gamepad will mirror the TV. Which still sucks but it's no black screen.

Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions About the Next Mario Kart

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "10 years. It’s been almost 10 years since the last mainline release in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart 8 came out for the Wii U in 2014 and became the best-selling game for the system by a sizeable margin, and later pulled the same magic trick on the Nintendo Switch under the stage name Deluxe. All in all, it's sold nearly 70 million copies over the last decade and is still selling like hot cakes to this day, so it’s no wonder Nintendo has been in no rush to replace it. However, with rumors of a new system being just around the corner, and reports a few years back that a new Mario Kart is indeed under way, it seems the era of 8 might very well be drawing to a close. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, but after two Nintendo systems with Mario Kart 8 at their heart, a lot of questions remain about how Nintendo will choose to follow it up."

I hope they just keep building on Mario Kart 8; Add a track-creation tool, and probably open it up to more Nintendo IPs with new tracks and characters, so Metroid, Punch Out, Starfox, Animal Crossing, etc etc.

gold_drake421d ago

there wont be a new one until the switch 2 comes out.

nintendo needs their bangers early on

The Next Mario Kart Desperately Needs A Good Gimmick

Mario Kart 8 has been out for nine years now if you include the Wii U version. Despite the Switch port continuing to sell insane numbers since it came out in 2017, many people believed that a new installment was way past due. When the Booster Course Pass was announced instead, it was a bit controversial, with one side of people stating that it was time for a new game, and the other side believing that this was the best course of action and that there's nothing else Nintendo can do to innovate the franchise.

There's nothing wrong with the games, but after most of them being very samey, I got a bit bored. I liked MKDS because it added a mission mode, yeah it didn't have maybe as many as I'd like but it was decent for variety.

I really prefer the new Mario Party for the different types of games in it.

Mario Kart doesn't really feel fresh because you know what to expect for every new game pretty much. The single player mode of DKR was far more in depth a game vs Mario Kart IMO, MK is probably better for multiplayer though.

-Foxtrot719d ago

It needs a campaign mode like Crash Team Racing with open hubs, driving around the Mushroom Kingdom, selecting your races and the like. Have a system like the CTR tokens within the races that then unlock secret racing cups later on or the time relics to unlock other things.

There's nothing wrong with the games but when you've had the same set up for so many games it just gets a bit samey after a while.

They could even have something like a track creator like Modnation Racers or something.

Neonridr718d ago

I always enjoyed the single player aspect of Diddy Kong Racing myself.

Knushwood Butt719d ago

After starting with the first game on SNES, I think the last one I bought was on the DS.

Phlacky717d ago (Edited 717d ago )

I think the next gimmick should be interactive tracks with obstacles and traps such as maybe throwing a shell ahead to make something fall on another player Also have water and mud parts that effect handling more also fire parts that can cause you to over heat if you stay in it to long etc...

Yi-Long717d ago (Edited 717d ago )

I don’t think it needs ‘a gimmick’ so much, because gameplay is pretty much perfect right now, but I would like the next Mario Kart to do either a ‘track-builder’ thing, so you just get access to the tools and make your own tracks (think Modnation Racers or LBP Karting), and/or expand upon ‘Mario’ Kart and open it up to the rest of Nintendo IPs, and just do a ‘Nintendo Kart’, so we’d see more of Zelda, but also Starfox, Kirby, Metroid, Valkyria Chronicles*, etc.

* I know, technically not ‘Nintendo’.
