Inspiration is a big part of the game industry, but if a game is inspired by another does it cheapen the experience? CGM's Jordan Biordi tries to examine the concept.
I prefer the Metroidvania style Castlevania games compared to the new Lords of Shadow series. While they do maintain the themes of the series, and the first features the voice acting of the great Patrick Stewart, Lords of Shadow felt more like a hack and slash game akin to God of War than a Castlevania game.
Even though Lament of Innocence went the 3D route too and had elements of hack and slash, it still maintained the exploration, Metroidvania feel that I like. I suppose Lords of Shadow was the 3D version of the more linear style games in the series, but I would be interested to see how MercurySteam could make a more Metroidvania style Lords of Shadow game.
