What the hell? Is this the new PlayStation controller?

Remember when we told you of rumblings on the next PlayStation system's controller and how it might have a touchscreen? Well, get a look at this strange thing. This image of what looks like a PlayStation-style controller plugged into something that looks like a development kit has been floating around for the past day.

New controller and the devkit. It looks the one proposed by neogaf members ( I knew they knew more than regular gamers which makes wonder if they were disguised SOny devs from the start). The light emitter will be used to be tracked by the new double HD PSEye and the litlle holes look to be like a built-in microphone.

Looks very ugly, plus what is the point of the touchpad if it's that small? I'm glad that it had analog sticks though, I just hope they aren't as loose as the Dual Shocks sticks.

The point of the touch pad is whatever the devs use it for. It doesn't need to be huge, nor should it have been expected to be on this established controller. If you were expecting even a 'large' screen that would be able to replace he standard input, I don't know why.

No, all I am trying to say is that functionality is limited because of the lack of size. I'm confused how an adults thumb will work with it.

Edit: Actually upon second look, I think the size of the touchpad is adequate. I'm interested to see what Sony has up its sleeves with the use of it.

I doubt the intended use for the touchscreen will require you to keep your fingers on the handles of the controller. In game use will probably be limited to a display such as tactics in FIFA, while other uses will be reserved for none gaming. For instance, you won't have to hold it like a controller if you use it as a keypad. You would just place it on your lap.

Seems to be thicker, have a touchscreen/pad, eye toy sensor, built in speaker, a button or port for headset below ps button, and rework analogue sticks.

Hopefully the final product looks sleeker.

Looks like a prototype, I would expect something a little more sleek in the final. Also I don't think they will keep a large glowing bar on the top.

More importantly is how it feels (also I'm surprised on what you can do with a thin strip).

What's wrong with the d-pad? The fact that they brought the directions together(like a larger vita d-pad) I actually prefer the vita d-pad over the D3 one. Also do the analogs look like they are going inwards instead of outwards?

You say speaker what if it's a Microphone , this will be a huge thing because it means that everyone with the DS4 will have a headset , it's one thing i didn't like about current gen console's when only a few had people mic's so not all Battlefield matches for example felt the same communication wise .

Seems close to the rumors and it does have a d-pad similar to the ps vita, which was used since nintendo's d-pad design can finally be used by other companies.

No need for alarm here. It looks solid, the light in the front makes me think MOVE control out the box. I'm not sure about the touchscreen... is it a screen that will deliver some video or is it just a touch pad I would rather it be a little screen.

It looks like there is a mic or a speaker in the front of the controller. That is a good thing, could be used for chat or voice commands. I'm not a button nazi so I dont really care about the analog sticks they look like they function and that what important.

It looks a little bit bigger than the dualshock, maybe a little wider grip....I would like that.

All in all I would say this controller should be at least good, great if a little wider and a video screen.

Grips are the same size, but slightly more rounded. This will please those that think it 'digs in' during long gaming sessions of tight grip.

The controller is a little bit taller and a fair bit wider.

I would call that tilt control, this would work like MOVE. I am a little bummed because I liked the idea of the dual split controllers. Maybe this is just early prototype that doesnt have the split yet.

I hope that is only a prototype. The analog sticks, light on the top and weird (speaker?) holes in the middle of the controller make it look very strange and like a cheap third party controller. It reminds me the PSone with its curves though and I do like that aspect.

That's the coolest looking controller I've ever seen. It looks very high-tech , much more so than anything we've seen from any other game company. That looks like the definitive version of the Dual Shock right there. The PS4 is going to dominate.

If the left analogue is used more than the D-Pad, shouldn't the analogue be closer to the left thumb?

Yes, exactly.

And the type of game doesn't matter. FPS or not, it's just way more natural and comfortable to play ANYTHING when the left stick is in the upper left position.

Just my opinion, of course.

And before everyone accuses me of being an Anti-Sony Xbox Fanboy, I have owned every Playstation console.

I just never realized how terrible the Dualshock was because that's all I ever knew until the Xbox came along.

I get how some people might want it swapped but I actually like it how it is. I prefer it to the xbox controller although both are fine for me. I hated the original Xbox controller but the 360 one is much better. Still though if I had a choice for layout I'd choose the DualShock one and I have large hands and get no issues even with extended play sessions.

Yeah it is all personal preference, and some people don't even care at all.

For me it is a big enough difference to make the Xbox my preferred console, all other differences aside.

I'll be buying a PS4 for sure, but if the controller keeps the same dualshock layout, it's still going to be my second favorite console.

They should NEVER offset the analogs. NEVER. It's the most ridiculous controller design I've ever seen. I prefer the N64's tri-form controller to what the Wii U and 360 use(oddly enough, I liked the original Xbox's ORIGINAL controller). I'll never understand the completely WRONG notion that offset analog sticks are somehow more ergonomic than a symmetrical setup.

That said, I'm not particularly enthused. Seems a bit bulky for my tastes, and the touch pad at center won't be easy to reach during gameplay. Also not feeling the analog design. Honestly, there's nothing wrong with how they are now. And the D-pad is just... I don't like it. Too close together, which I think will hinder precision.

Still, this DOES look rather official. If it's not, then somebody went through a LOT of trouble to fake it.

I hope it gets refined quite a bit before the system releases.
