What the hell? Is this the new PlayStation controller?

Remember when we told you of rumblings on the next PlayStation system's controller and how it might have a touchscreen? Well, get a look at this strange thing. This image of what looks like a PlayStation-style controller plugged into something that looks like a development kit has been floating around for the past day. (PS4, Sony)

New controller and the devkit. It looks the one proposed by neogaf members ( I knew they knew more than regular gamers which makes wonder if they were disguised SOny devs from the start). The light emitter will be used to be tracked by the new double HD PSEye and the litlle holes look to be like a built-in microphone.
WildStyles  +   428d ago
Definitely looks real. Probably a prototype. Anyway, it's fine with me.
riverstars86  +   428d ago
Looks very ugly, plus what is the point of the touchpad if it's that small? I'm glad that it had analog sticks though, I just hope they aren't as loose as the Dual Shocks sticks.
KwietStorm  +   428d ago
The point of the touch pad is whatever the devs use it for. It doesn't need to be huge, nor should it have been expected to be on this established controller. If you were expecting even a 'large' screen that would be able to replace he standard input, I don't know why.
riverstars86  +   428d ago
No, all I am trying to say is that functionality is limited because of the lack of size. I'm confused how an adults thumb will work with it.

Edit: Actually upon second look, I think the size of the touchpad is adequate. I'm interested to see what Sony has up its sleeves with the use of it.

I doubt the intended use for the touchscreen will require you to keep your fingers on the handles of the controller. In game use will probably be limited to a display such as tactics in FIFA, while other uses will be reserved for none gaming. For instance, you won't have to hold it like a controller if you use it as a keypad. You would just place it on your lap.
MEsoJD  +   428d ago
Seems to be thicker, have a touchscreen/pad, eye toy sensor, built in speaker, a button or port for headset below ps button, and rework analogue sticks.

Hopefully the final product looks sleeker.
Kevlar009  +   428d ago
Looks like a prototype, I would expect something a little more sleek in the final. Also I don't think they will keep a large glowing bar on the top.

More importantly is how it feels (also I'm surprised on what you can do with a thin strip).

Feb. 20th awaits
KwietStorm  +   428d ago
It wouldn't have to be lit up if you're not using it though.

THE PS4 has USB, everyone start getting excited. lol
MariaHelFutura  +   428d ago
I love USB ports.
cloud495  +   428d ago
It's blue so it must be USB 3.0!
C0MPUT3R  +   428d ago
I like the GAF concepts better.
.
Hopefully the aesthetics look better for the final controller.
ElementX  +   428d ago
Concepts are lame
dgonza40  +   428d ago
I can guarantee it will look different. They just want to get the hardware and necessary tools to the devs before making everything nice and pretty. Very excited
nevin1  +   428d ago
"Also, get a load of those analog sticks. They look like belly buttons. Gross!"

lol.

anyway, no thanks if true.
extermin8or  +   428d ago
I don't know about you guys but my belly button does NOT look like that... and any final design will look sleeker than that..I'm sure (then again the boomerangs)
Nyxus  +   428d ago
Looks like that could actually be real. And not bad looking either!
-Gespenst-  +   428d ago
Woah, that looks legit. Nice, robust looking controller. I doubt that's the actual design of the Ps4 console itself in the background though, just a big generic silver box...
Cam977  +   428d ago
Looks great! Roll on the 20th! I bet thi is just a prototype and will see some changes before launch, just like the silver PS3 pre-release controller; you know, the one with the huge handles

Nothing personal Sony, but that is one ugly, disgusting looking controller. Not to mention that horrid, horrid Dpad. I hope its fake. Ugh.

The only apparent bad news(rumor) that has come from this upcoming conference has been this... THING!

MY EYES!!!
KrisButtar  +   428d ago
What's wrong with the d-pad? The fact that they brought the directions together(like a larger vita d-pad) I actually prefer the vita d-pad over the D3 one. Also do the analogs look like they are going inwards instead of outwards?
Zechs34  +   428d ago
Yeah, youre right. After a closer look, I can see what you mean. I guess just the fist sight kinda threw me off lol.

Also, the analogs do look like a mix between concave/convex... wanna get a feel for those soon!
LOL_WUT  +   428d ago
I think we can say those rumors about the controller not having analog sticks are pretty much fake.
PS4isKing_82  +   428d ago
I also see a what looks like a small speaker on the controller too, kinds like the wiimote has.
kudakadere  +   428d ago
You say speaker what if it's a Microphone , this will be a huge thing because it means that everyone with the DS4 will have a headset , it's one thing i didn't like about current gen console's when only a few had people mic's so not all Battlefield matches for example felt the same communication wise .
Yodagamer  +   428d ago
Seems close to the rumors and it does have a d-pad similar to the ps vita, which was used since nintendo's d-pad design can finally be used by other companies.
WooHooAlex  +   428d ago
That actually looks kind if legit to me. Of course that would be a watered down version of what the final product will look like. Remember the Vita dev kits?
Dlacy13g  +   428d ago
This seems much more legit than that other abomination we saw earlier on N4G with no thumbsticks.

edit: still, is that small speaker grill for voice command or voice chat? I prey that is not the speaker for voice chat.

OK....OK.....

No need for alarm here. It looks solid, the light in the front makes me think MOVE control out the box. I'm not sure about the touchscreen... is it a screen that will deliver some video or is it just a touch pad I would rather it be a little screen.

It looks like there is a mic or a speaker in the front of the controller. That is a good thing, could be used for chat or voice commands. I'm not a button nazi so I dont really care about the analog sticks they look like they function and that what important.

It looks a little bit bigger than the dualshock, maybe a little wider grip....I would like that.

All in all I would say this controller should be at least good, great if a little wider and a video screen.
bangshi  +   428d ago
Grips are the same size, but slightly more rounded. This will please those that think it 'digs in' during long gaming sessions of tight grip.

The controller is a little bit taller and a fair bit wider.
Hufandpuf  +   428d ago
"the light in the front makes me think MOVE control out the box."

Did everyone seem to forget that the DS3s had motion sensibility built-in to the controller?
edonus  +   427d ago
I would call that tilt control, this would work like MOVE. I am a little bummed because I liked the idea of the dual split controllers. Maybe this is just early prototype that doesnt have the split yet.
JaredH  +   428d ago
I hope that is only a prototype. The analog sticks, light on the top and weird (speaker?) holes in the middle of the controller make it look very strange and like a cheap third party controller. It reminds me the PSone with its curves though and I do like that aspect.

Those sticks aren't convex enough for me.
IronFistChinMi  +   428d ago
I like the look of it, looks much more rugged and suitable for my hands than the previous DS's.
Adva  +   428d ago
Looks like a legit Dev Kit model.

You kids need to pipe down. This is a DEV model, NOT the final. Stop having fits.
ApolloTheBoss  +   428d ago
Is that a generator behind it? How much power does this thing take?!

Killzoner99  +   428d ago
That's the coolest looking controller I've ever seen. It looks very high-tech , much more so than anything we've seen from any other game company. That looks like the definitive version of the Dual Shock right there. The PS4 is going to dominate.
LONG LIVE PLAY
riverstars86  +   428d ago
Drugs are bad for you, just so you know. That controller is beyond ugly, it's probably a prototype and the finished version will be unveiled on the 20th. Good lord, if it was a turd and it was going to be the new controller, you would probably still claim it looks good. Lol
BabyTownFrolics  +   428d ago
there is something about your tone and word choice that makes me want to punch you

also cant wait till the 20th

Wow, fanboys really are blind.
Gamer-40  +   428d ago
I think its real.
Crystallis  +   428d ago
if this controller was released with the dev kits then its definitely not the final version.

When are they going to swap the D-Pad and the left thumb stick so it isn't so damned awkward to use?
TemplarDante  +   428d ago
@Unholy_one
The layout you want, Its absurd to me.
I just dont see the logic in it.
How is the DS3 arkward to use? The 360s controller ONLY makes sense for fps's...
Any other game (eg Fifa), its a joke.
USEYOURFIST  +   428d ago
Erm, no!
Hufandpuf  +   428d ago
I'm with you. I can't grasp how people can play shooting games whether third or first person with that layout.

If the left analogue is used more than the D-Pad, shouldn't the analogue be closer to the left thumb?
UnHoly_One  +   428d ago
Yes, exactly.

And the type of game doesn't matter. FPS or not, it's just way more natural and comfortable to play ANYTHING when the left stick is in the upper left position.

Just my opinion, of course.

And before everyone accuses me of being an Anti-Sony Xbox Fanboy, I have owned every Playstation console.

I just never realized how terrible the Dualshock was because that's all I ever knew until the Xbox came along.
despair  +   427d ago
I get how some people might want it swapped but I actually like it how it is. I prefer it to the xbox controller although both are fine for me. I hated the original Xbox controller but the 360 one is much better. Still though if I had a choice for layout I'd choose the DualShock one and I have large hands and get no issues even with extended play sessions.
UnHoly_One  +   427d ago
Yeah it is all personal preference, and some people don't even care at all.

For me it is a big enough difference to make the Xbox my preferred console, all other differences aside.

I'll be buying a PS4 for sure, but if the controller keeps the same dualshock layout, it's still going to be my second favorite console.
mdkgod43  +   428d ago
its fake omg you people will by anything is swear and plus that touch screen looks way to small
#29 (Edited 428d ago ) | Agree(3) | Disagree(16) | Report | Reply
Mr_Writer85  +   428d ago
That's because it's a touchPAD not screen.
mdkgod43  +   427d ago
why would i want a touch pad? come on sony u can do better
Mr_Writer85  +   424d ago
For navigation? Would it not be easier to use a pad to navigate say the store?
Funky Town_TX  +   428d ago
Not much effort
PS3 controller with a screen. I just wanted the analog sticks offset and tighter.
Hicken  +   428d ago
They should NEVER offset the analogs. NEVER. It's the most ridiculous controller design I've ever seen. I prefer the N64's tri-form controller to what the Wii U and 360 use(oddly enough, I liked the original Xbox's ORIGINAL controller). I'll never understand the completely WRONG notion that offset analog sticks are somehow more ergonomic than a symmetrical setup.

That said, I'm not particularly enthused. Seems a bit bulky for my tastes, and the touch pad at center won't be easy to reach during gameplay. Also not feeling the analog design. Honestly, there's nothing wrong with how they are now. And the D-pad is just... I don't like it. Too close together, which I think will hinder precision.

Still, this DOES look rather official. If it's not, then somebody went through a LOT of trouble to fake it.

I hope it gets refined quite a bit before the system releases.
