Younger gamers may not understand but a couple generations ago, most people knew that if Squaresoft made it, it was a must-buy. It was guaranteed gold.

RPGs aren't dead. They are in a weird state right now. Seeming JRPGs are severely out of touch and WRPGs are starting to lose the heart of what makes them role playing titles. Honestly, it's that so many games have "RPG" elements in them, it's taking away from the core genre.
only the big Budget JRPGs, their are still great games coming out but not made by SE, you need to look beyond them, now the top JRPG makers are Level5, Atlus and Tales studios.
recently their was Xenoblade,Tales of Graces F and Persona 4:Golden (which is as good as the all time classics), and upcoming are Ni No Kuni (already considered a classic by rpgland.com) Tales of Xillia, Bravely Default and the next mothership game in the MegaTen series
I bought Xenoblade Chronicles. Haven't got around to playing it, yet. But, I've heard great things about it. I haven't played the Tales series. I'm anal about starting from the beginning, and it's a long series. I also prefer turn-based, and strategy RPGs. Action RPGs are all there is, nowadays. I don't really get into Persona, because the atmosphere just isn't my thing.
I'm just really picky, I guess. I have picked up some of the better action RPGs, lately, though.
