WC - Bethesda’s latest was one of the best sellers of last year, and a massive critical success, but what gives it such an appeal? I mean, Bethesda can craft a world, but jeez, you can see through Skyrim’s technical cracks and see it struggling to cope.
Well, the game is open ended, so it is not expected to look like Uncharted. But it does need a hand in the animation department.
Combat
I agree the combat was faulted, felt like you were fighting cardboard cut outs. Though why cite AsCr as the game to compare? Dark Souls or Dragons Dogma would be a better comparison, since they are both RPG's as well, and curb stomp Skyrim in combat.
Tech
This is just a standard Bethesda problem, bloating save games were in Oblivion, it's funny, the Japanese, who do not have as good of tech as western devs (supposedly) didn't have that issue with Dogma. Because every 7 in game days, it resets itself... Why did that not occur to Bethesda?
Story
This is not on his list, but really... TES has a bad story. It's lore is deep, and vast. But they do not tell stories that well in the game itself.
I don't see why anyone cares for running around aimlessly looking for crap to do, when you spend way more time looking for stuff to do rather than actually doing stuff.
campaigns story are craps.
hell i find the thieves guild quests and dark brotherhood x100 better than the campaign
The biggest problem was that they dumbed it down and made it accessible for a more casual audience. They stripped many things from the game which were in past ES games
Where was the variation from the last ES games, I felt they removed a lot of stuff and missed chances of adding more stuff into it.
Why did they get rid of greaves for armor...was it that complicated, why did they get rid of the Acrobat/Athletic skill when they could of merged them and made it into a theif skill, maybe thiefs could climb moutains or houses better or find new paths to take on quests, for example instead of going inside a dungeon to get to the top of a tower a thief could just climb it if his skill is high enough or how about getting rid of weapons breaking, fair enough have a skill to stop them breaking later on we can pretty much all aquire but why not let us earn it...they should of removed the recharge feature for staffs because it was off putting when you wanted to be a mage, you would think Azuras star would make it so you didn't have to but oh no...it didn't.
Even magic was disapointing...take destruction for example, only fire, frost and shock...thats it. What about posion, air, earth, dark magic or unique magic which related to your chosen race. For example Woodelfs could call upon nature to trap their enmies in vines from the ground or turn them into tress, werid idea I know but it would be pretty funny seeing human shaped trees that you've created.
See I could go on...I'm pretty sure any of you guys could add on to the missing features or missed opportunities.
voice acting ???? lol

this is acting my friend
While I did think it was better than Oblivion, I was very, very disappointed with Skyrim.
The series lost all of its depth and character post-Morrowind.
Look at R* Games. GTA IV and Red Dead, though not as large as Skyrim, are open world games and they don't the amount of bugs Skyrim has. I can understand pop-in and some graphic clipping, but R* never has game ruining bugs in them.
I honestly don't understand why people ride Bethesda's jock, it just enables them to release broken games.
Because alot of those are tiny in comparison scale wise, don't have a 101 little extra area's to explore. They don't have to keep track of a billion different items and it's locations.
And doesn't have day and night ai scripts. The bodies in gta(gib immediately ) and red dead gib after a while, bethesda's games takes days ingame to disappear.
But red dead is so incredible miles and mile of nothing to do but skin some animals or hope you run into a random event. If your not doing missions/quests.
Funny neither red dead or gta ever really impressed me, in its combat. Maybe it shines in the gunfighting duels. But other than that basic is a understatement.
Personally I think Skyrim has very bland fetch quests, the dungeons looks the same, combat never evolves, the story is boring, and player choice is almost non-existent. Those are really important for an RPG. My opinion might change if I look at it as an adventure game though.
Please keep in mind I'm not trying to rag on, I just have different expectations for RPGs. Either way, the bugs are not acceptable.
i wonder with soooo many bugs and i mean horribles bugs ( like mammoths superman mode sky high) the game stil get high reviews while other games with bgs they dont forgive but for the elder scrolls everyone forgives...lol
Beautiful environments outdoors...bland ugliness everywhere else.
Character models look last gen.
Same old samey story...one will rise up and save the land..yay.
Terrible combat.
Crafting system is somewhat broken. ex: making iron daggers gives just as much XP as making better weapons and armor..which cheapens the feel of leveling both your character and skill.
I doubt there's more than 10 voice actors in Skyrim, so the dirty bum that teaches you pickpocket sounds like the blacksmith in Whiterun...
Horses are still pointless? Still?
Yeah...I've killed a ton of dragons. Died only twice. I've killed 3 bears and died 17 times. There's no balance in Skyrim.
Last but not least, the game was broken for months on two platforms. I crashed to desktop at least 2 an hour for the first 3 weeks the game released. The shit still bugs out every now and then but during that launch window...holy shit...wore out my F5 key.
So the PS3 has limits...agreed. Skyrim not running properly is not one of those limits. If they're able to patch the PS3 version to work past 30 hours of gameplay, doesn't that suggest that care and effort during testing of the PS3 version was all that was really needed in the first place? Fanboys and Bethesda blasted the PS3...when in reality, it was Bethesda's own incompetence at work. They damn sure got Voice commands working properly though, right?
Sorry unless your popping a potion at the start of every dragon fight or alot of elemental resist gear, the elemental damage will be to high too survive.
Dragons usually attack near towns, where everyone and the dog helps you, kill it, and it's easy to kill once it's grounded.
Iron daggers gives just as much xp as better weapons and armor, yeah till you can craft better tier armor and weapons people don't lvl on iron daggers btw.
They lvl of leather bracers it's easier to get mats and lvl enchanting with petty gems only, with dungeon weapons. Don't bother enchanting your own gear with anything less than a grand soul gem. <--For people new to skyrim.
If your dying that much to bears, your gear is underpowered or your weapon skills and or blacksmithing needs a heafty boost. You will not be able to play as a glass cannon mage against the melee enemies, especially bears solo.
My combat skills are maybe 40-50 at best, don't screw with the bears till lvl 30-35 and after you have a companion. I can kill bears ridiculously easy now dragons and their elemental attack will get me more often.
Why is a pc guy complaining about last gen graphics, with the mods that are available for almost every aspect of the game.
Between fortify health to armor fortify to regenerate health potions, bears shouldn't be that to a mid level player. Maybe your doing a 2 handed build.
At least they aren't as bad as a deathclaw from f3 at close fange.
You called it with the mage thing, but that falls back on the fact that combat is outright terrible. But in Skyrim's defense, very few games get the warrior class right.
As for my complaining about the graphics, even maxed out, the characters and animations look wooden and ugly. Thank god for mods, but I'm speaking to the game that Bethesda shipped...
The game they shipped was simply unimpressive. Mods have made the game more enjoyable but again, I'm speaking to the game they shipped. It's downright shameful that a handful of modders made a better Skyrim than Bethesda.
2.) Show me a game from last gen that had better character models? The game was also a HUGE improvement from Oblivion character model wise.
3.) Same old story. Yea I suppose your right. Bethesda could have been more ambitious. But I liked the plot of Dragonborn, and learning the words of the dragon, the grey beards, etc. I thought the story line of the Brotherhood and the Mages guild was interesting as well. And if you think about it, a good amount of critically acclaimed games have "Same old story." Uncharted, Halo, etc.
4.) Combat does need to be improved. Bethesda did add more things and improved the combat from Oblivion though. (Doul Wielding, etc.)
5.) Crafting is broken.
6.) I thought the voice acters did a much better job around this time. And the sheer scale of the game, I think with the amount of NPCs they did a decent job. No?
7.) Horses are not pointless? :/ You walk and I'll use Shadowmere.
8.) Why are bears killing you? Its been a while since I played (I'm level 50-something) but bears get DESTROYED when they play me. Those Elder/Ancient/Legendary or whatever there called take some hits to kill though. Balance DOES need work though, but again its improved from Fallout and Oblivion and its not too bad.
9.) Bugs. Yea, bethesda fucked up with the PS3 version and should have worked on the game more.
As for voice commands, Microsoft makes it incredibly easy for the developers to implement voice commands with the API's and such. Sony made the PS3 a pain to work with, so eh.
As for Skyrim, its not perfect. It has flaws. But my expierence with the game has been great. I thought the story was interesting, it had some very memorable missions (being kidnapped by the brotherhood? Awesome). It had its flaws too. The game froze on me about 3 times, and one mission had the framerate drop to like 10 FPS. Bethesda also fucked up with the PS3 version, and it sucks for those users that had problems with the game. But still, very few games come close to the scale and scope of Skyrim, and are better games than it.

This was fixed on PC. Daggers no longer give much xp. Not sure if this was Bethesda or one of the mods I have though.
I would recommend the mod that clears the memory every 5 min or 10 minutes, it really helps with crashing.
Skyrim isn't perfect, but on PC, it was the best 60$ I've spent.
"It was the best 60$ I've spent." Very much true. You can keep playing it for a long time, discovering things, installing mods, etc. Most of the games now go for a 1-2 day experience and it's over. No wonder the franchise has been goty again and again...
