Why we should be comparing games to theater

Games are often compared and contrasted with cinema. But with "players taking on the role" of various heroes throughout the gaming canon, shouldn't we be comparing them to the theater? (Assassin's Creed, Culture, L.A. Noire, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
