Western RPGs Needs More RPG Elements

MMOsite writes: Over the last few years, I feel that Western RPGs are starting to lose their grip on what an RPG actually is. They are becoming more and more like an action game rather than an actual RPG. Just because you have a level and skill system does not actually make it an RPG. They just use the convenient quest system offered by RPGs to try to make it look like an RPG. Let us take a look over some of the RPGs that were released and see how different they are from traditional RPGs. When you make an RPG game, you have to have some sort of balance with action elements to make it interesting. JRPGs suffer from being too passive and it makes the game feel slow. Western RPGs suffer from having too much action and it takes away from the RPG feel. (Fable, Mass Effect, PC, PS3, The Elder Scrolls Online, The Witcher, Xbox 360)

I agree for the most part except "Mass Effect 1 was basically KOTOR but reskinned."

Disagree. It's the hybrids that are the most fun. Having to sift through tons of useless gear to find a good piece, then going back to a town to vendor so you have more room for more junk? uh..no thanks.

having talent trees which are meaningless cuz you know you're going to look up the best build anyway? uh..no thanks. that's the one thing that diablo 3 got right.

I totally agree. The modern rpg should be a hybrid. I want to play a game and not walk around for 10 minutes.

I want to roleplay a badass hero not some messenger running back and forth every few minutes.

Thank goodness the DnD days are coming to an end. It was great back then and I had loads of fun with Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights etc but now tastes have changed and we want newer things.

Theres something I like to call gameplay memory. We also tend to remember how games feel while playing it and repeat of that feels stale. So yea some new/hybrid thing is our future.

witcher games are not really western (poland) but i think its best example of rpg genre by far.
