Rumor:Microsoft's "Metal Gear" for the 360

It seems absolutely impossible to notice that Microsoft is unfazed by Metal Gear Solid 4, the titan of all games released during the year on the PS3. Splinter Cell: Conviction might not be powerful enough to scratch our beloved Solid Snake, so Microsoft has decided to bring something as brilliant as the game on the 360.Word has it that the company is in collaboration with a highly talented studio that can give their 360 something way better than Snake.

No this is just hype. PGR4 used 95% of the 360's power. Halo 3 was only 640p. This game in 08 will not look better than PS3 games. It will look better than anything before Uncharted. I have to disagree. I find the MGS games to have overly clumsy gameplay, and stories that are borderline garbage. I think that unless Konami has done something about the fixed camera, targeting, and overall clumsy hand to hand combat, I believe alot of people will be let down. The stories imo are just plain weird and a little too 4th grade level for me. Another thing that needs work is the localisation. Every MGS game that I have played, I couldn't help but think, this is an obvious attempt of a Japanese dev trying to make a Western- Japanese game.

Clumsy gameplay? No, not really, I like the MGS gameplay, its great. Garbage stories? Yes absolutely, about as predictable and boring as they come (so far!! MGS4 looks to have a more interesting story with the mercenaries stuff). I guess those who appreciate Days of our lifes-type stories (Ohhh, He's your evil twin out to destroy you. No Wait! Clone! ) might find it interesting, but for the rest its just annoying melodramatic stuff that keeps you from murdering dudes snake-style.

I would have to agree with you on a few things, but kind of disagree with you on some of the control aspects of the game. The controls were B+ which is great for a game like Metal Gear the hand to hand combat was always lacking in Metal gear, which I think was caused by dev's to give it a more of a stealth feel.
Now I do agree that the story is a bit fourth grade G.I. Joe-ish. Which kill's it for me. Plus, they recycle a lot of characters that need not be mentioned any more. This is why I've always enjoyed Splinter Cells stories. It draws me in very easy because the missions that sam are placed on are much easier to comprehend, with out leaving you to wonder, " What the hell Just Happpend?!"
Don't get me wrong I like Metal Gear, and to find a game of it's caliber with out being a complete rip off is hard, but can be done. The question is, will it be accepted?

I think that the MGS were decent titles when compared to most ps2 games. I believe that when it hits the next-gen though alot of it's gameplay will seem dated, that is unless some of the issues I posted are addressed. From what I've seen though everything looks the same. The story looks to be as convaluted as ever, and too strangely homo-erotic and perverted for most young people. I haven't heard much about the localisation, but imo this is what will decide alot of opinions on the game. Lips not moving in sync and mediocre voice acting matter to some people.

1. First and foremost, this studio was never known for creating the best graphics in any game they've made. They excel in storyline and gameplay.

2. To say it will look better than anything current or future game on the PS3 at this time is something that can never be confirmed. Because a game shown in it's alpha or beta stages isn't what it will look like once its released.

3. I believe this is only trying to start a fanboy flamefest by luring folks into the post with Metal Gear Solid going to X360 when it has nothing to do with the IP then say it'll be better than...say that once it is released.

Games take years to make, Microsoft can't just pull out a new IP out of their @sses. Even if they decided to start making a new IP like MGS in 2007, it'd take atleast 2-3 years to release meaning I doubt we'll see it until 2009-2010. And, who the heck wants to play it in 2009 when we have the real MGS4 in 2008. Im glad Sony uses PLAY B3YOND because Microsoft should start using PLAY BEHIND. And, even if this new IP is AAA and gets 9.0+ ratings across the press, it won't sell as much as MGS4 just beause MGS's fanbase is so large and so common to the mass consumer, they won't care about some imitation, they'll be excited for the real thing.

It's going to be interesting to see what MS does to keep Sony in check this year because 360 should be able to continue outperforming PS3 in the graphics department. The only thing 360 can't do that PS3 can is hold 50GB of data on a single disc, but developers should be able to offset storage requirements by generating procedural textures for things like bricks, concrete, grass, trees, water, etc. & rendering cut-scenes via their game engine instead of using pre-rendered CGI.

Obviously there are games that are being developed on the Xbox 360 that are not yet announced, it's a given, we all know that. And for that reason, and the fact that we've seen the PlayStation lead in terms of visual display (in what games can look like in 2008), it is easy to believe that they'll be a 360 game which also looks stunning.

But at the same time, I cannot think for the life of me why Microsoft would allow Sony to take the spotlight for 2008 and not announce this game, or have something about it leaked to get the Internet buzzing - instead we get a rumour of all rumours, that would kiss life into the hype meter for 360 owners, that there is this secret game which blows everything out of the water in terms of graphics and it's a 360 exclusive. Yeah. Ok. And everyone automatically believes it? I think this attitude is more so that people want to believe it, because lets face it, what evidence do we have other than a random internet rumour with no source and it being completely unheard of?

I'm not saying this is NOT true, but it's just too convenient for it to be anything like what it implies in this rumour. We'll get these type of rumours also relating to un-announced projects Sony has for 2008. They always seemingly happen to show their heads when a spotlight is on another platform. If there is a game in development, I'm sure it'll look great as a 3rd/4th generation game, but you're setting yourself up for a massive fall if you call it the best looking game to date. You can assume, you can hope, but why state it as such when you haven't even seen one thing from it?

However, its great that Microsoft is creating new IP's especially when their 1st party studio collection has been questioned recently. More IPs', more variety in IP's.

Do u guys remember Duality that was supposed to be released on the first xbox? Phantagram worked on that title plus one more..Strident the game.
I remember when I saw these games that had incredible graphic I said to my self that these games cant be made on the first xbox.And they were canceled for no reason.

I did som fast research and find out that phantagram is working with MS.
It was the same people that brought Ninety-Nine Nights.
It wasn't a good. I remember it was an article about them and they were talking about future project. They admitted that Ninety-Nine Nights was a rush game but future project will definitely be very good.

So the only game that had MGS stamp that I can think about is duality or strident. Maybe its a new IP, WHo knows.
But that just a thought.

This whole concept of "MGS killer" is retarded. Anytime any game is touted as being a "killer" it more often then not sucks. For example Killzone was hyped as the Halo killer however Killzone was pretty mediocre. The xbox 360 is the home of the new IPs.... Funny things is that since the released of the xbox 360 Sony fanboys keep saying that the xbox 360 will not have any games... why? because most of the games are umproven new IPs... but since the release of the xbox 360 how many AAA new IP hit the top charts? Um its the worse of the series but yet you only played 2hours? Personlay i thought it was the best of the series and i beat the game. I will agree the cure system and the menu system was a bit clumsy but there was nothing like seeing Snake take a bite out of a pyton or pull a bullet from his skin. If Kojima didn't write the story then they are setting themselves up for failure making statements like that. MGS is about more than graphics so even if the game looks better im still not convinced. It has to have a great story, Characters, Plot all that. I haven't seen many games that can pull people in like MGS. I think this is were some of the Japanese studios out shine the Western companies, but I agree that Western company are created better graphics besides Square-Enix, and Konami. Capcom seems to be catching up because DMC4 looks great.

It's a down and dirty game that is really for mature crowds and is loved by people all over the world not just the US and Europe. And it still sales millions with all the glamour. I have the greatest game never made in my bookshelf. In the alpha stage it looks better than UT3. I plan on putting it on 10 disks for the 360.(sarcasm ended) This story was such a wasted time and space. Hmm a game being made behind closed doors. Yes there are plenty of them going on right now. So an un-named dev is making a game that will rival MGS4. It has all been done before and they all fail. When a dev seeks to destroy an icon it will fail. Real devs make games for the gamers not for personal need to combat another game. I believe the devs in question are doing the same thing. Love it or loath it, MGS4 will shift consoles and units to those who loved the old games. It doesn't matter what MS releases at the same time, there is no substitute for MGS if thats what you want.

If there is an amazing new unannounced game coming for the 360, they could do with letting people know about it. Having had such a brilliant year in terms of content, next years line up could do with a few more, so a few announcements in the new year would give those 'sitting on the fence' pause for thought if they were not already decided!

I see this from a very different point of view first lets start with the basic
-Unless they made a Kojima clone it is literally impossible to make a "MGS" killer since what makes MGS is Kojimas vision basically Kojima IS MGS, NO Kojima = NO MGS
-The "mystery" studio its probably not japanese and most probably western or American with just that priorities and vision about the game "MGS" related vary WAY too much resulting in a VERY different product that will not even remotely qualify as a MGS "killer" it will simply be another Splinter Cell (not a bad thing by the way)
-The only mention of something graphics related shows the studios priorities will be to make hype the game on completely different things that what would hype MGS something like "Spectacular graphics, massive multiplayer action" and such which has little to do with MGS
-The game will probably not be released till late 08 or 09 effectively after MGS4 is released an wont interferer with MGS4 launch and effect
-If the game was somehow secretly developed to be released in 08 to compete with MGS4 (or its at least rushed to do so) it will actually compete not with MGS4 but with the new Splinter cell and since both are 360 exclusive one or the other will cannibalize the sales of the other and one of the studios (probably Ubisoft) will be angry (see Halo 3 effect) and this might effectively jeopardize future Splinter Cell exclusivity
-Again if its not Kojima and his ultra obsession with perfection and unique vision the end result will be something else and cannot really be compared to MGS, and just by looking at MS usual game priorities the games multiplayer and combat will probably be the main focus of the game contrasting with Kojimas main focus on story and storytelling
-Pretty much as that editorial (Sessler?) posted here on N4G said ANY game that tries to be a something "killer" is bound to fail doing so

A the end pretty much unless they hire Kojima to do it (or make his clone?) the end result will actually be a Splinter Cell killer or just another western stealth game and in the WORST case scenario that they try TO hard to be a MGS killer...it will result in a cheap and obvious clone

The Xbox 360 has some great titles, no doubt about that, but not even the Xbox 360 fan base seems to be too sure in the success of its own platform when they start to spew garbage such as this.

Seriously people, you can't talk constantly about how great "your" platform is and marvel at its superiority, and then start more or less stealing titles from other platforms. That my friends is a sign of weakness.

Now I've got the Xbox 360, as well as the PS3 and Wii, so I don't really care, I just want great games, but this is kind of tragic. We already know that MGS 4 won't show up on the Xbox 360, anyone saying anything else is in denial. For me, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (for PC) was and still is the most impressive stealth espionage game available.

It was way ahead of its time, and the gameplay was revitalized and new (use of the knife).

The lighting engine is gorgeous, and the textures are great, the levels were awesome....

I really think Chaos Theory is the game Ubisoft needs to model their future stealth espionage games on.

They shouldn't worry about Metal Gear, as Splinter Cell can hold its own.

Splinter Cell is more approachable from a mass market viewpoint; MGS is a little more hardcore, with more emphasis on story and tactics.

Both games are good in their own right, and both of them cater to slightly different demographics.

MGS4 will be Game of the Year in 2008. This game has the best story line over any game out there. The thing is because the story is complicated, you actually have to have some intelligence. Whoever said that the gameplay may look dated, needs to give their head a shake. Well I think Metal Gear is probably my favourite franchise ever. It's the reason I got a PS3 and I can't wait for the day it's unveiled.

If this does turn out to be a Metal Gear beater then it'll be one of the best if not THE best game ever. I'll pick up a 360 without hesitation if that is indeed the case. With no other news other than it's in development though, I think it's a little early to start ranting or raving. If they decide to take it FPS route then it can't be compared to MGS.

This sounds exactly like the kind of hype Halo 3 got before any actual gameplay was shown, but when i bought it, I was less than blown away by the game. It was Halo 2 in HD.

I'm not saying that this game can't live up to it's promise, it's more than possible for a game to beat Metal Gear, but i'm gonna reamain really sceptical of this one.

It's better to be sceptical, that way you won't be disappointed if the final product falls short of expectations. This'll be the next Halo 3, it's gonna be waaay overrated, but Microsoft are just going to drum this game into people's heads until they outright refuse to admit it might suck.

History of gaming has showed us that games take a long damn time. Mass Effect and Bioshock, both took about 4 years to do. MGS4 took about 4 too. For MS to come out and show us a game today! it will mean if this game is going to be any good, it will take time, like like 2 to 3 years time. This means nothing now, Sony if anything has more games being made right now for the future then any one, they have like 8 teams that have not shown Next-gen games yet. These means nothing for them in 2008. Its like saying this game will be made in a year. MS does not have a team that good that can put off a game in a year. The thing about your post is that you havn't realy looked @ how ms works. What your mosly discussing is 1st party of sony. You kind of contradict yourself saying they have stuff in dev., but ms doesn't have any. Ms goes after a lot of new ip's, and thats visable with the 2006/2007 lineup. Because the havn't said anything about the 2008 lineup, doesn't mean they havn't got anything for 2008. They have only been giving little chucks to players like:

All those games and devs i just mentioned all had games on the 360
last year that were Exclusive, now there all multiplatform. MS can't do like what they did with these games and get them exclusive any more. Look at Lost Planet and even Bioshock (2k is looking for a PS3 developer Most likely for the Bioshock PS3 port). They don't have the lead like they did before to get exclusives, the playing field is leveld pretty well. Assassin's Creed sold 900,000 on 360 and 700,000 on PS3. Call of duty 4 sold like 700,000 on 360 and 400,000 on the PS3. This shocked the F@#K out of me. Yes the PS3 for the first time is selling on par with the 360. This is why you are seeing all these games go Multiplatform for 2008, its because the gap is shorting. MS can't get a lot of games exclusive anymore, even if they do, it will be timed exclusives, like Haze and Unreal for the PS3. They mean nothing in the long run, cause now look at Saints row and lost planet, they are for every one know. Motorstorm and Resistance will be selling the PS3s forever.

Even after all that, i see were your coming from and i do think MS will get a exclusive IP, but it will be a timed exclusive, in this day and age NO publisher will put a game on one system forever.

that the game would look better than the PS3 games we've seen so far, considering that it will be a *THIRD GENERATION 360 title, while we are only in the *SECOND GENERATION PS3 titles (i know, it's hard to believe that games like Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank Future are *FIRST GENERATION titles; Unreal Tournament 3 was the first of the second generation PS3 titles, as it came out after the first year. Uncharted came out on the 20th, but that's awfully close to the 17th of November, so i count it as first generation).

the same thing happened with Heavenly Sword. based off of nothing more than gameplay footage, people slapped the "Goddess of War" label on it, even though the game plays *NOTHING like God of War (i'm serious here, and i'm a big God of War fan; the games are *NOTHING ALIKE), but it was too late, people's opinions were set, then they *TRASH the game because it *DOESN'T play like God of War, even though the developers never said it *WOULD (if you ever read *ANY of the interviews with Ninja Theory, it's *ALWAYS the interviewer who brings up God of War, not Ninja Theory. Naughty Dog, on the other hand, always cited Resident Evil 4 and Gears of War as an influence and inspiration).

How is a game pathetic 2 copy such a great type of game? All games copy at least a little bit from another game . medeal of honor-call of duty(not sure which 1 was 1st) Tony hawk copied points lik old school arcade games crack down and GTA. BF2 another shooter it is awsome but still it copied quake 4 same as BF2 and also GRAW lost planet copied the boss fight from games. my point is all games use thing from outher games .
