Mario Kart World Review - IGN

The Switch 2’s Mario Kart is a blast, but its open world isn’t the main reason why.

badz14912d ago

and some delusional fanatics here are saying this is going to be GoTY hahahaha

MDTunkown11d ago

It will sell more than any game released this year

-Foxtrot11d ago

And? That's not what was he was saying.

Chard11d ago

1. The game is great, as expected for Mario kart
2. I don’t think anyone expected a kart racer to be goty
3. In Australia at least, it’s the cheapest Mario kart has ever been at launch for a console

repsahj11d ago

I agree, I never saw anyone here saying it will be Goty.

Mario Kart World’s Free Roam mode feels like an afterthought

Mario Kart World’s Free Roam is a fun distraction away from the main modes, best played in short bursts and not quite the 'open-world' it was initially billed as.

Hopefully the 2.0 update adds a collectibles tracker.

DreamcastGuy - cloying demeanour that he has aside, was one of the first to criticise it.

8 years, 150+ Devs and the free roam mode is pretty empty.

What did they do with the time they spent developing the game?? How did they take 8 years? I refuse to believe it.

It sounds like the game may have been ready and they just held it back waiting for the Switch 2 to release.. which already released 2-3 years later than when it could've.

"It sounds like the game may have been ready and they just held it back waiting for the Switch 2 to release."

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is just a slightly upgraded version of the wiiU version of Mario Kart 8. What you said is highly likely and this game was ready years ago. They just didn't want to cannibalise the sales of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe after it's huge success.

I totally agree. They had this in the oven, hot and ready but left it out to stale for the Switch 2 release. They needed something to build the user base in the meantime for their upcoming 1st-party titles. $80, pffffft. Nintendo keeps Nintendo-ing.

Michiel19898h ago

@divinehand having new good launch games is a bad thing now? also this is nintendo, if they could have released this 1-1.5 years ago before switch 2 announcement, then release a deluxe version on switch 2 you bet they would've done that. Milking the whole userbase twice for a new mk game instead of once for the remaining people that didnt own mk8 deluxe yet, you didn't think that would be the better milking?

After having played it for quite a while, i don't think this game would've run well on switch 1 with this many players. I don't enjoy it as much as i did with mk8 on launch, but mk8 was also way easier to pick up and get relatively good at quick. Each level has 3 different tracks basically + so many combinations of tricks you can do but it's pretty hard to get good at. I'm glad they didn't just make mario kart 8.5 but instead tried something different, even if im enjoying it a bit less.

The people that complain oh the switch 1 is so weak, actually also get angry now that they release a game for the new stronger version instead of the old weak one they keep complaining about, it's so weird and it's also the people that think they know, without having played the game at all, funny how that always is the case. Nintendo has so many reasons to hate them and yet you guys managed to miss all those and flame them for basically the one right thing they do, mk9 not being a cross gen game.

I always like to remind people that a console generally takes between 5 to 8 years to be fully developed ! Taking into consideration that the previous build were heavily based on the normal switch which is easily 15 years old technology Mario kart world is something akin of early Xbox / ps4 gen which would match the timeline you mentioned with the game being easily 7 years old

shinXseijuro13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

It’s ok to disagree but if you are looking into making the conversation interesting and constructive please allow me to hear why you disagree. Wii U came out in 2012 And one for the first games the switch got games was a port of a Wii u game and the graphics still looked pretty much the same. Now that I’m remembering stuff a little bit more even Zelda was a Wii u game . Switch 2 is at max 2017 technology with a few extra perks

RaiderNation5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

I wouldn't be surprised if this game was originally meant for the Switch Pro, which was scrapped in favor of the Switch OLED due to chip shortages at the time. To me, the game just doesnt feel like a true next gen iteration of the series.

Rather than going the open world route, I wish the Mario Kart team had focused on customization. It would've been cool if they could've given us the tools to design our own karts and tracks. They could've called it Mario Kart Maker.

Lego 2K Drive>Mario Kart World👍

Si-Fly10h ago

Yeah okay 😂 I’ve not bothered with free roam in MKW, that’s not what I bought it for. But I have had a boatload of fun with my kids doing Grand Prixs and Knockouts, the new tracks are absolutely fantastic!

TheColbertinator13h ago

Free roam is typically pointless. Among the worst offenders are Mafia 2/3, GTA4 and Saints Row 4

andy8510h ago

Didn't have fun bowling with Roman?

TheColbertinator2h ago

Nope. Only 4 clothes sets to buy. The car wash is stupid and I only liked playing Darts.
