The Nintendo Switch 2 is now available, and early reports suggest that the console/handheld hybrid has a "very poor" LCD display.

every person who has held one said the screen looked really good. So take this for what it is I guess.

Sciurus_vulgaris16d ago

I own an original Switch. The screen looks and feels cheap when compared to many phones and tablets. Overall the Switch 1 felt cheaply made in terms of build quality when compared to competing consoles. Thus, I wouldn’t be shocked if the Switch 2 looks and feels cheaply made when held or seen in person.

Neonridr16d ago

many phones and tablets that cost like $1500? You mean my LG OLED has a better screen than my Switch OLED?

you don't say.. please tell me more.

andy8516d ago

@neon in fairness it doesn't have to be expensive to have a quality screen. The portal screen is fantastic and its $200

Neonridr16d ago

@andy85 - and it's LCD with no HDR, no VRR, and no 120Hz support.

andy8516d ago

I'd rather it actually look great than any of those. 60 to 120hz is negligible and im a PC gamer. Always ramp up visuals and lock at 60. and HDR in a poor quality screen never looks good. VRR I'll give you, but given the graphical quality of switch games and the power of the console (with DLSS) to run those simplistic visuals. I doubt many will be dropping below 60 anyway so VRR is just a small bonus.

Fishy Fingers16d ago

"60 to 120hz is negligible"

Immediate bro doesn't know.....

Mr Logic16d ago

@Neonridr

And? The Switch 2 is also LCD in case you forgot. HDR is useless unless the screen is actually capable. Go ahead and play a game on an HDR 400 display and tell me how much the colors pop. (They aren't, you're supposed to turn off HDR)

Neonridr16d ago

@andy85 - I don't think I've ever heard an avid PC gamer say 60 to 120 is negligible.

KyRo16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

Neon we live in a time where you can get a whole budget phone for less than £200 and it have an 120hz OLED display brand new. Look at Xiaomi for example. It's greed as usual with Nintendo.

babadivad16d ago

That's why I never got one. When I held it in my hands, it just felt like a cheap toy at a premium price.

fr0sty16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

"@andy85 - I don't think I've ever heard an avid PC gamer say 60 to 120 is negligible."

Because they have to justify that extra $ spent somehow... it's placebo. They are noticing the faster pixel response time of these monitors, not the extra frames.

It's just like the whole 120fp tiktok craze, they're just 60fps videos at a high bitrate with a ton of fast motion on them, which you can tell by downloading the videos and running mediainfo on them. But people swear they are 120fps...

andy8516d ago

@Fishy Fingers I do though. I have a 360hz monitor (only because it's OLED and that hz came with it was standard, and yes I've ran games at 240+ too.). Unless you're a competitive gamer 120hz or more is practically pointless. Its 'slightly' smoother. I'd rather lose that small difference and have the games looking much better. I can have full RT/ultra graphics at 1440 or lose the RT and drop the settings and resolution to have it at 120 fps. It's not even a choice.

andy8516d ago

@neon because they're justifying spending thousands on a PC. The difference is small, I prefer visuals. 60 fps is very very playable and for me personally I dont need to ramp the frame rate up and lose a lot visually. I'm not a professional gamer, thats who needs that.

RaidenBlack15d ago

"60 to 120 is negligible" .... the discussion should've ended there
(medical condition causing perception issue might get an exception)

Just got mine this morning... first thing i did (after updating) was uncheck the auto brightness option. It looked dim to me with it on. unchecking it, and leaving it at the default brightness (I think is 70%) it was much more crisp and vibrant. i did a comparison of fast racing fusion in the 2 with fast RMX on the 1 and the 2 was much sharper and more colorful... and my SW1 is an OLED.

repsahj16d ago

Excited to get mine! But sadly Nintendo SEA decided to release switch 2 on June 26th! 20 days more to go!!

Neonridr16d ago

jealous.. mine should be here at some point today.. was out for delivery at 8am which means it'll show up at my door at like 3pm. Good ol Purolator XD

Jin_Sakai16d ago

Clickbait articles. I just got mine and the display looks great. It supports HDR, 120fps, and VRR. I had the OLED model before and I’m happy with Switch 2 display. It’s plenty bright and colorful.

Neonridr16d ago

mine is transferring data from my OLED model now.

rob-GP16d ago

How is it clickbait when it's just repeating what a specalist said? He has the tools, experience and knowledge of HDR as he professionally tests displays all the time. Regardless of if you disagree with him or not, the screen has a max brightness of around 400-450 nits, which is a lot less than modern phones. Basically, it's 'fake' HDR in portable mode as it can't get bright enough.

Even in docked mode, most games aren't outputting HDR correctly

Profchaos16d ago

@rob I get why they limit it if you had your phone on max brightness all the time your battery would be shocking you only use that max brightness on very specific scenario's and auto brightness always brings it back down

Grilla16d ago

It’s not clickbait, he just has higher standards. It looks good compared to Switch 1 cuz that screen was garbage.

RaidenBlack15d ago

@rob, dude ... just wanna say 450nits aint bad, especially for a portable LCD.
dont compare to modern phones, coz those have mostly gone OLED route and has been the most crucial component of that industry that advances at break neck speed.
I agree Switch 2 should've shipped with OLED but 450nits is still acceptable ... and then again its easy to speculate, they'll ship a Lite and an OLED model later.

RedDevils15d ago

Just use your current OLED switch and compare with the 2, obviously the OLED have better brightness and in the dark.

It's no surprise, this author has been lying about video games for years. He gets his clickbait stories posted here and attacks people who report them for lying, clickbait, and other nonsense.

He's a clown.

RedDevils15d ago

Is not even Switch 1.5. Wait isn't this the same guy that talk shit everything Sony while on the other hands praise everything Nintendo?

Cacabunga16d ago

I was going to wait until an oled model. Also to see if it will just be a remaster box

repsahj16d ago

There's something wrong with you if you're thinking about checking the black levels when you buy a Switch 2. We've seen how great the games running on handheld and TV screens, why do you need to check if the HDR levels are at maximum? If the game is beautiful enough to your eyes, who needs if the HDR is performing at peak performance?

gold_drake16d ago

ud think that it works if its advertised, thats why

RhinoGamer8816d ago

No OLED for this mega high price?! MIYAMOTO!!!

mandf16d ago

Where are the reviews from websites

Yui_Suzumiya16d ago

RedDevils15d ago

Which is a given seeing the paltry 3rd party support Switch 1 saw in its early days. A lot of devs sat on their hands when it came to the system. They had their reason but that mentality can have consequences. Namely devs kicking themselves when it proved to be a hit. Devs didn't want to make that mistake again with the Switch 2.
