Redfall developer working to U-turn on single-player always online restriction

Redfall developer Arkane is "working actively" to remove the game's always-online requirement when playing strictly in single-player mode.

Good for them for listening, was a deal breaker for a lot of people.

Obscure_Observer400d ago (Edited 400d ago )

Lol! Let´s see which excuses they´ll come up with to hate on this game now! XD

Xbox killing yet another fanboy DRM BS narrative.

RpgSama400d ago

I mean, it was a fair complaint at the time, not a "DRM BS narrative", the game WAS always online. Once they remove it then really good for them to listen to their customers.

Godmars290400d ago

But they're only fixing something because of complaints. The same complaint that damaged the XB1's launch if no full run.

darkrider400d ago

It need to be good...

Fanboy narrative, nope Microsoft scummy narrative. Something that blind followers don't like to talk about...

-Foxtrot400d ago

“ Let´s see which excuses they´ll come up with”

Says the guy who comes up for excuses for every single little thing MS or Phil does

Obscure_Observer400d ago

@RpgSama

"I mean, it was a fair complaint at the time, not a "DRM BS narrative", the game WAS always online. Once they remove it then really good for them to listen to their customers."

Agreed. My point is, if the studio is listen to its costumers and making an U-turn in all this always online crap is obviously because there´s no a DRM enforcement policy at place at Xbox Game Studios.

Studios are free to do what they want with their games.

EvertonFC400d ago

What you mean all those Xbox gamers who ran a mille after the Xbox one reveal for always online.
Both playstation and Xbox gamers have rallied against always online, stop being a gaming fanny ffs.

Obscure_Observer400d ago

@-Foxtrot

"Says the guy who comes up for excuses for every single little thing MS or Phil does"

At least I´m honest and stay true to my opinions to this day, unlike you that always trashed Xbox and Phil, asked by his head and now is here for Xbox first party games under his tenure and probably will buy his console as well if you didn´t do it already.

I won´t be surprised by your hypocrisy though. ;)

SierraGuy400d ago

Lmao 😂 Xbox behind the scenes pushing always online watching closely for backlash before backing off like the bi*&es they are.

You are applauding because they listen? Why? Was it hard to even know that having is not a good idea?

Obscure_Observer400d ago

"You are applauding because they listen? Why?"

Yes, unlike Polyphony they listened to their customers and Xbox is not opposing Arkane´s decision either. So yes, both Arkane and Xbox Games Studios deserves praise to listen to Xbox gamers.

TricksterArrow400d ago

It was my only real gripe, will pick it up now. The game looks fun. I only hope it's legit fun, though, not Back 4 Blood fun.

gangsta_red400d ago

Well, now there's no excuse for the people that were on the fence only because of it being....always online.

Obscure_Observer400d ago

Well, Foxtrot still needs to be convinced that it´s not a co-op focused game. Haha.

-Foxtrot400d ago (Edited 400d ago )

Lmao

First of all calling me out like that…how sad

Secondly if you want to go down that road I could literally comb through this website to show people all the bullshit you’ve spewed, and I’m sure others could aswell.

Thirdly…it’s not a co-op focused game. Are you just fooling yourself at this point? Have you seen the trailers, the gameplay, marketing…it’s co-op based mate, a co-op game you can play single player but most likely a second thought (thus hardly showing us anything lengthy on it)

Jesus you really are the most insufferable person on this site.

Obscure_Observer400d ago

@-Foxtrot

"it’s co-op based mate, a co-op game you can play single player but most likely a second thought (thus hardly showing us anything lengthy on it)"

It´s a much co-op based game as Borderlands, Lol.

Feel free to continue on your delusional crusade, dude. I never played a co-op based game which you´re not tied to any squad, and can do whatever you want (including mission and story mode) solo but that´s just me.

ModsDoBetter400d ago

Whilst I typically disagree with the way in which some people engage in dialogue on this site as it is oftentimes unnecessarily confrontational, I have to say that I agree with @Foxtrot here.

There is absolutely no way that you can look at this game and say it was not built with co-op in mind.

I’m not a fan of the way people feel the need to be aggressive in their responses but your response to Foxtrot claiming it’s a “delusional crusade”…yikes, yeah you deserve to be called out here.

The thing is, if you just had a little break, came back with a calm mindset, you’d maybe realise that you’re setting yourself up for disappointment when release day rolls around and you try to play this game solo. It absolutely was built fRoM tHe GrOuNd Up for co-op.

Listen, I’m as much an Xbox fan as I am PlayStation, not every game has to be a system seller, not every game has to be what you want it to be, it’s okay to say “I’ll still enjoy this game solo” but no, you have to belittle others and say they’re on a “delusional crusade” simply because you’re insecure that your only chosen gaming platform isn’t performing well this gen, like last gen. Totally unnecessary & whilst I do hope you have fun when the game launches, I can bet that you’ll prefer to play this co-op than solo.

Obscure_Observer400d ago

@oIMyersIo

"The thing is, if you just had a little break, came back with a calm mindset, you’d maybe realise that you’re setting yourself up for disappointment when release day rolls around and you try to play this game solo. It absolutely was built fRoM tHe GrOuNd Up for co-op."

Dude, no offence, but I don´t need your crystal ball predictions when pretty much all gaming media outlets that played 1 hour and half of this game at Arkane´s Redfall event has played it solo.

So if you expect me to get disappointed at this game at launch, well... let´s just say you´ll be the one disappointed.

-Foxtrot400d ago

@oIMyersIo

Thank You

You want to know why he's like this with me and others? It's because we said something a little bad in a past article and he's become so offended as the game now a part of MS yet he's never let it go

I remember making a comment criticising how despite the fact Arkane has stated that the game is single player because it can be played solo, we've hardly seen much on that. They showed a small light house mission which was edited to chop it's way through the mission showing us quick looks at certain moments yet that was it. All I was saying is show us more because there's a lot of 4 player co-op based games which developers say can be played solo but it ends up not being as good because the focus is for 4 players to work together (like shown in most of the trailers - combing attacks and abilities etc).

Then the always online part happened and at that point (before this) I was like "Well I'm done" and he got more offended over that.

Point is if Microsoft NEVER bought Zenimax and this game wasn't an Xbox exclusive he would not give a shit what people are saying about it.

ModsDoBetter400d ago

@Obscure

“Dude, no offence, but I don´t need your crystal ball predictions when pretty much all gaming media outlets that played 1 hour and half of this game at Arkane´s Redfall event has played it solo.”

You do see the hypocrisy in your statement, right? You’re over here throwing around baseless claims that the game isn’t intended to be played in co-op despite the fact the LITERAL DEVELOPERS have marketed the game and all gameplay shown has been co-op. “Crystal ball predictions” you also just proved my point about the way people feel the need to be excessively keyboard warrior-y on this site from time to time. Congratulations, you played yourself.

“So if you expect me to get disappointed at this game at launch, well... let´s just say you´ll be the one disappointed.”

I take no pleasure in anyone being disappointed or let down, but that’s part of life. You live and you learn, at least most of us do…

Like I said, I hope you enjoy the game but as the game is tailor made for co-op play, if you’re going into this with the mindset “yay amazing solo game” you will be disappinted.

Obscure_Observer400d ago

@oIMyersIo

"Like I said, I hope you enjoy the game but as the game is tailor made for co-op play, if you’re going into this with the mindset “yay amazing solo game” you will be disappinted."

How do you call a game which you can play solo from the start to finish a "tailor made for co-op play" game? Are you serious, dude?

Redfall doesn´t even feature AI companions, so, are you implying that I wouldn´t be able to play Redfall in case I don´t have a friend´s squad to play it? Is that it?

If so, you´re out of your mind and completely out of touch on everything related to this game. Period!

Dandizzle400d ago (Edited 400d ago )

For me the generic gameplay and visuals still counts as an excuse. However I might play this game when its free on game pass, or buy it when its on huge discount.

Workshyskiver400d ago (Edited 400d ago )

Good to hear but really what developers don't know that this is hated by everyone?

gangsta_red400d ago

I wouldn't say everyone, because I definitely didn't hate it. It didn't matter to me either way.

JEECE400d ago

I think it's more about understanding the target audience for your game. I mean, you don't really hear Destiny 2's playerbase complaining about always-online, because it's understood by that audience as part of that type of game, even if you aren't actively playing with other people. The problem with Redfall is that they have been trying to present the game as a single player focused game where co-op is an option but not a necessity. In such a a situation, people expect to be able to play offline.

Elda400d ago

Good to know that they're listening.

SimpleSlave400d ago

How noble of them. I imagine it wasn't so much the backlash but the size of it. As in not many people cared enough to hate the decision to be always online and even less cared enough to defend it. But we'll see I guess. Coming straight to Gamepass it'll probably end up with 7 Trillions hours played or something like that.

Gotham Knights
The Suicide Squad
Redfall

PS3/XBOX360 era Fruity Loots by design gameplay is still the future for some it seems. Awesome!

Tacoboto400d ago

One of those games isn't even Games as a Service
Another one is delayed till sometime because of massive backlash due to its glorification of being GaaS.

And then we have Redfall, which isn't a superhero game, has no microtransactions, no in-game store, and whose gameplay impresses based on virtually all of today's previews.

SimpleSlave400d ago (Edited 400d ago )

All three games are 4 player Co-Op designed games that because of the backlash they were forced to change. All three games are designed with the colorful loot motif made ever so popular during the PS3/XBOX360 era. Where this was very prevalent in a lot of games. And then perfected during the PS4/XBOXONE era with similarly garbage UI.

As for Redfall, buddy, have YOU seen the gameplay? Cuz it IS indeed out there for you to look at and let me tell ya, it looks beyond meh. But whatev. Also, please, unless they're paying you, stop regurgitating the press info like that. It's just not a good look is all I'm saying. But you do you.

One last thing. Where did I say all three were Superhero games? I know, for a FACT, that Redfall is NOT a superhero game. Duh! Obvs! Redfall is about a group of beings with powers trying to take down vampire bad guys. Completely different to a superhero game. Like POLAR opposites I would say...Right? Wouldn't you agree?
...
...
😒

Tacoboto400d ago

Gotham Knights is not only not GaaS, it's also only a two player game. Do you actually know what you're complaining about? None of these games are similar in gameplay or tone and only one is released.

Most Disappointing Game of 2023

VGChartz's Craig S: "Who doesn't love a good dose of schadenfreude every now and then? There was no shortage of that on offer in terms of video games last year, hidden in plain sight amongst the more genuine disappointments (I'll leave it for you to decide which category each of the following games falls into).

One unfortunate trend when it comes to the biggest disappointments of the last year was that so many were new IPs, including Bethesda's latest major release Starfield, the Arkane Studio B-team's abortive attempt at a co-op vampire shooter, and Square Enix's action RPG Forspoken. Mega-franchise Call of Duty and the perennially delayed The Lord of the Rings: Gollum round out the list of Nominees."

I think disappointing and bad are not the same thing.

The article calls out lotr Gollum that was not disappointing it was bad

Redfall is both disappointing and bad.

starfield, MW3 sure disappointing.

But if I was to add some disappointments of the year I'd add

firewall ultra absolutely a dumpster fire that killed the studio.

007 goldeneye the port of the N64 game it's disappointing as we didn't get the rare remaster version and the switch version has very poor controls.

Rdr was not the remake we wanted a simple port that didn't even run at 60 fps on launch on ps5

Jedi survivor Just broken on day 1

coolbeans93d ago

-"The article calls out lotr Gollum that was not disappointing it was bad"

I personally fall on the 'Gollum disappointing' spectrum. Here's why: even though Daedalic Entertainment was hopping out of their point-n-click lane, they *were* a solid group of devs that had an unexpected concept. Those two things, cheering on a dev taking a risk with a brand and the odd-yet-intriguing template, at least made me hope for something decent; instead, it's the reason they're only publishing now.

CBaoth93d ago

But the concept never stood a chance, even in the heyday of the Metal Gear/Splinter Cell days. When this was announced, no one was intrigued by its premise. Fell flat on its face. Even if Gollum had come out to glowing reviews the game would've struggled to perform financially. That's why it's not disappointing, just bad. Had no hype. All the other games Prof listed had the potential to sell great or be reviewed better but failed. Low effort remasters like the GTA collection, the RDR port, and MGS Collection could all sell well but still be severely disappointing. Gollum was uninteresting at concept, terrible in its execution. The result was expected sadly.

-Foxtrot93d ago

Goldeneye is so weird

We got no proper remaster for it despite the fact it was being worked on and it was almost done apparently then the Xbox version didn't come with online play but the Nintendo Switch one did...the Switch...the system where online play is a f***** ballache.

RhinoGamer8894d ago

I recently came back to Redfall, my lord...the controls and movement were a disgrace! I felt like my character was drunk. Zero fine movement control. The XBOX producers on this game should be fired.

OtterX94d ago

I think Diablo IV deserves to be on this list. While not the worst made game, it was one of the most disappointing. Many of us had such high expectations for it and it turned out to be so incredibly dull, a slog to play.

Sonic188193d ago

It's basically Diablo Immoral 2.0 with lots of microtransactions

DarkZane93d ago

Diablo 3 was as much as a dumpster fire at launch, but a year later, it became a very good game and was well worth playing. Give Diablo 4 the same time. In a year, it's going to be awesome I bet.

coolbeans93d ago

I was under the impression their most-recent update fits that bill.

OtterX93d ago

K I'll try reinstalling in a year or 2.

I didn't play D3 until after the first year, so I will certainly give it another shot.. especially to try and get my money's worth out of it. But at launch, I was bored out of my mind and uninstalled it.

Sonic188192d ago

That's the biggest issue. Unfinished games with lots of flaws and issues during launch. Unfortunately, most gamers don't forget or forgive that and would rather spend their money on another game

jznrpg93d ago (Edited 93d ago )

Jedi Survivor was disappointing for me because I waited until a month ago to play it and it still has major issues. My saves were getting corrupted so I had to restart an old save however many times and a plethora of other bugs.

Of course there is Redfall Starfield but to me it’s MS overhype underdeliver so I expected it to some extent but not as bad as it was.

Gollum had little to no expectations.

Forspoken was a disappointment but not as bad as it was made out to be especially if you turned on Japanese voice acting. It was a 7 type of game but it looked like it could have been better.

Diablo 4 was scored well at launch but all my friends that loved and played 3 (after years of swasons) up until 4 were disappointed with 4 and don’t play it anymore .

Factions getting canceled was a bit of a disappointment. Not huge as I don’t play gaas much but it was disappointing.

Nintendo not releasing Switch 2 again was disappointing to me. I don’t use my Switch much it’s just so outdated and mosty kiddy games release some more games that I want to play not my kids!

No physical copy for Alan Wake 3 disappointing as hell, actually beyond that it is upsetting (to some extent,I will live of course)

Gamers getting used to owning nothing and renting games is very disappointing. I don’t watch Netflix anymore it’s mosty mediocre crap and rental services will go that direction if allowed.

CBaoth93d ago

this whole gen has been a major disappointment to me. Least amount of gaming I've done since bar/clubbing days. Watching fanboys argue now is akin to a couple of kids fighting over the front seat of a short bus. They can't even argue over games anymore.....cuz there aren't any! With two of the console manufacturers "switching' over to x86 architecture we shouldn't be having these draughts but here we are. And the third happily chugs along selling games on decade old microchips with an OLED screen.

Profchaos93d ago (Edited 93d ago )

X86 is a shared architecture but both run different development pipelines so they still have to Dev for those consoles plus PC and Arm if a switch port is included.

None of this will reduce Dev times games are complex now probably more than they need to be honestly but if every studio takes 3 to 5 or even 10 years to bring out their big titles there's going to be many dry spells

On that note arm processing is far more efficient than x86 I think Nintendo is making the right call sticking with that and we will probably see Sony and Microsoft do the same next gen as more effort is being made to bring arm into desktop space lately

Profchaos93d ago

Being disappointed that Nintendo isn't releasing ultra violent games is like being disappointed that the the next GTA game is open world. Plus totk and Metroid prime remaster did come out this year that's about as violent as they will even get

Im pretty certain that one experiment in publishing devils third is one they would like to forget.

Plus all rumours for the switch 2 places it's release in 2024 they make killer numbers at Christmas if they announce they are making a switch 2 those sales dwindle and shareholders get upset. If a switch 2 doesn't release this year that's disappointing. And if third party's don't develop for it even more so there's zero garuntee they will

I agree gamers getting used to owning nothing is a huge disappointment I don't think many will go silently into that one though

Xbox Game Pass App for Quest VR is totally pointless but has so much potential

CG writes: In this video, we take a closer look at the recently released Xbox Game Pass App for Quest VR headsets and determine that due to being able to do more with the Quest Browser, it’s pretty pointless as it is. Yet, there’s so much room for potential with the social aspects of the devices. We also compare to how it holds-up against paid for apps like Virtual Desktop.

When i first tried it... it gave me a headache with its frame rate and pacing. The update did a good job of mitigating those issue and its been rather fun at times. Still seems like there is more work to be done but otherwise this is at least how it should have been from the beginning. if it was... things would have turned out differently.

maniacmayhem141d ago

I've heard the update did this game a bit of justice. Unfortunately, I think for a game like this the damage is done and there's no turning it around.

It's different for survival type, MMO lite games that may be light on content at release like Sea of Thieves or NMS, but for a co-op multiplayer shooter, low framerate, bad AI, etc, not a lot of people are willing to come back with so many other better options on the market.

thesoftware730141d ago (Edited 141d ago )

I went back to it as well, and having good fun with my friend that actually bought it for $8.

I'm in the same boat as Darth, at launch it gave me a headache, I'm not even sure if it was 30fps, and the enemies were to spaced out with bad AI. Since then they added more enemies, fixed some of their AI(getting stuck behind cars and such) up'ed the FPS, now I'm having fun.

They still need to add more weapon variety, and better rewards for completing nest and such. I keep getting low level items that are to easily dismissed . They also need to fix some of the interface, like the map market on the map screen sucks. With some fixes they can make it a solid 7 or 8 out of 10 game.

Inverno141d ago

There's nothing to find out. The game hasn't gotten any actual update that makes it worth buying. Just some general fixes, but it's still an incomplete game, they sold you an incomplete game, knowingly, and hyped it up, and lied about it. Stop letting these things slide.
