Microsoft has discontinued all Xbox One consoles

From The Verge: "Microsoft has stopped manufacturing all Xbox One consoles. The software giant originally discontinued the Xbox One X and digital Xbox One S ahead of the Xbox Series X launch, then quietly stopped manufacturing the Xbox One S at the end of 2020, leaving retailers to sell out their remaining stock.

“To focus on production of Xbox Series X / S, we stopped production for all Xbox One consoles by the end of 2020,” says Cindy Walker, senior director of Xbox console product marketing, in a statement to The Verge."

Yeah can't very well have a last gen console that beats out there series s console in most stuff as proven by digital foundry

Orchard834d ago

Except it gets 0 fps on next gen games such as Starfield… I think I’d rather have the $300 next gen console instead.

darthv72834d ago

beats it in what exactly? Id say its the other way around. Series S has more games with 120fps mode, more games with RT, more games with 60fps (where the X sticks to 30), offers FPS boost (where the X does not). The Series S is the culmination of One X performance and S all digital design. Which is why both of those units were discontinued well before the Series systems launch.

itsmebryan833d ago

@Orbilator
You think Sony has a better idea by producing PS4 when they already said they "believe in generations." and will not support PS4 much longer. And if they continue to support PS4 won't that hold the PS5 back?

To continue to sell obsolete hardware sounds like a anti- consumer money grab to me. What do you think?

JackBNimble833d ago

The series S is the better option anyway, I don't see the problem.

Crows90833d ago

@Orchard

Only becuase they decided not to release it on xbox one x. If it works on the series S...we all know it would work on the One X. Thats just fact since the series s is very much on par and sometimes the weaker console.

Sgt_Slaughter833d ago

@darth yet for some reason the Series S did not get any of the backwards compatible upgrades the One X got.

Orbilator833d ago

@itsmebryan, it's not Sony that drops there last gen consoles like stones. We know who does that and it isn't Sony.

Will they tell us the total amount manufacturered I wonder?

Aloymetal834d ago

MS wants to move the industry away from sales and into subscriptions, mau and PR BS that only their fanbase believe, they know they can't compete with REAL numbers. It took MS 15+ years to realize that but they finally got it.

rdgneoz3834d ago

MS use to brag about sales numbers when they were in the lead during the 360 days. Then once MS started losing in sales numbers to Sony, they stopped showing real numbers and started going with % increase for the quarter or year. Then they moved down to subscriber numbers or such...

Aloymetal834d ago

@rdgneoz3
Exactly, 360 was in the lead only because was rushed to the market 1+ year ahead of PS3 and by the time PS3 released, XBOX had already a good chunk of the market and 10 million consoles sold. Let than sink in for a minute. We still hear some bragging about the 360 when the competitor was not even in the race yet. History has shown time and again that they can't beat PS on a level playing field.

TheColbertinator833d ago

"MS wants to move the industry away"

The industry leader makes that decision and Microsoft hasn't been that since the 360 days

Teflon02833d ago

The Col, tbh they've never been that. Wii was in control and by the time Wii's hype died, PS3 was the topping WW yoy.

neutralgamer1992833d ago

rdgneoz3

Remember people like major nelson boasting about sales numbers and now they want to share hours played and bullets fired in game as stats

Aloymetal

From the day PS3 launched till the end of generation it outsold Xbox 360 every single month in world wide sales. That's how PS3 caught and surpassed Xbox 360. So even that year ahead start couldn't take them home and with PS4/Xbox one they got embarrassed. It was like PS2 vs OG Xbox type numbers. PS4 is 115+ million and Xbox one is less than 60

And let's talk this generation where PS5 has over 5 million lead already. Ms use to say first to 10 million controls the market well PlayStation 5 will be first to 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 122+

OptimusDK833d ago (Edited 833d ago )

@rdgneoz3 you are free to your opinion - but it is not based on facts.
MS have said and also shown that they dont care about console sales - as why they are putting games an a service across PC; XBOX, CLOUD and PHONES. So they dont care where you play - as long as you buy their subscription and play their games.
So it would not make sense to steer towards most sold consoles - i know it is difficult for some gamers to understand that the future is not based on a specific type of plastic but the services they put out.
Look at AMAZON, GOOGLE, Nvidia and even Sony will budge very soon and we already see the buy into PC there as well.

One of the most disappointing consoles, especially coming off the 360, which was my favorite of that gen. Here’s hoping the Xsex can return to the days of the 360.

MadLad834d ago

Last gen was atrocious.
MS definitely learned from that. They've made many steps in the right direction, and seem like real competition again.

darkrider834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

What steps? Real competition? How do you do that with no games. When it's the next big game? Starfield is what? November? Forza and halo were hits? Can you find them on any chart on December? Is Microsoft number one in any market? Was number any month last year? What the diference from last gen? Not even numbers from GP Microsoft reveal anymore... This Gen they launched a weak, cheap, cross Gen console and a good one.

MadLad834d ago

@darkrider

Get over yourself, man. I haven't touched my PS5 since Ratchet and Clank. Studios under MS made up a good margin of the best games of last year. Even if they weren't all exclusive, everything they put out going forward will be, and there's a bunch coming down the pipeline.
Playstation fans are still just sitting and waiting for two sequels that can also be had on PS4.
Xbox being blasted for promoting crossgen releases seems pretty funny, now that it's evident Sony is doing the exact same thing, just tried to keep it under wraps to the public, eh?

Games aside, they offer the best BC, the best subscription service, and the cheapest barrier to entry when it comes to hardware.

Yeah. MS is, objectively, the most pro consumer of the big 3.

itsmebryan833d ago

@Darkrider
You didn't just say "Xbox has no games.". When was the last PS5 1st party game released and when is the next 1st party game coming out?

I'll wait for your quick reply.

kickerz833d ago

Get over yourself mate. Go back to your PlayStation dungeon. Forza and Halo were massive hits. Scored great reviews all round. I've been playing both all holidays. Starfield will be amazing, something else great to look forward too

Chevalier833d ago

@Ted

"Get over yourself, man. I haven't touched my PS5 since Ratchet and Clank"

Maybe you should take your own advice?!

GamingSinceForever833d ago (Edited 833d ago )

You just bragged about not touching your PS5 in over 7 months just to prove some fanboyish point. How about you try getting over yourself.

Matter of fact you bragged about Death Loop being made by MS and that is available inly on the PS5 so why haven’t you played it?

I honestly don’t believe that you play any games because you spend way too much of your spare time on this site. 😂

AuraAbjure833d ago (Edited 833d ago )

Last gen was really really fun. The Witcher 3, Alien Isolation, Battlefield Hardline, Dead Rising 3, Titanfall, Strike Suit: Zero, Breath of the Wild, the MCC, Rainbow 6 Siege. Good times 😎

Although I loved 360 and am a fan of xbox products, the 360 had a pretty terrible launch. Rrod was ridiculous. Went through 2 base models and an elite console

Father__Merrin834d ago

Although the rrod was bad they was able to quickly fix it by doing free returns. The 360 launch was amazing still remember seeing pgr3 and fight night at a friend's on a hd telly it totally blew me away

414gamer834d ago

Free returns still had you without a system for months waiting on a fix. I loved the system but it definitely had its flaws is all I’m saying.

Teflon02833d ago

Free returns wasn't a fix lmao. My friend went 2 months without a console. Everyone I knew that had it just bought a new one instead because they didn't want to wait 2 months and no I'm not even exaggerating or BS'n. RROD was an issue until they made a whole new 360. That didn't just go away. It was hands down probably the longest running console malfunction ignored in production lol. That being said, I don't remember what version of fight night I played, whether ps3 or 360, but Fight Night Round 3 was God tier back then

Orchard834d ago

Agreed. The X was a nice little box but there’s no correcting the total cluster that was Xbox One launch, and when you screw up your launch that much, you’re stuck with it through the end of the generation.

The positive is that it seems to have acted as a course corrector for Microsoft, similar to PS3 for Sony. It now seems like they’re going in the right direction, being more consumer friendly and being more competitive.

darthv72834d ago

As a console/controller collector, the 360 gen was certainly good. But the xbo gen was even better. Between the two I have 17 different 360 consoles and 20 different xbo with more that I want to get.

Same with ps4, im up to 17 now and still have a few more to get.

Crows90833d ago

Its definitely in a position to do that. Lots of great IP in the works...hopefully they release and are actually great games.

Meanwhile sony making more ps4s...*sigh*

834d ago
darthv72834d ago

But who is going to buy them? I mean there is a plethora of them on the 2nd hand market for much less than retail. Unless Sony is planning on selling new slim for $99 like they did back in the PS1 and PS2 days before end of production.

834d ago
Tedakin833d ago

Because they can't manufacture PS5s due to chip shortages*

Hofstaderman833d ago

@ Marvelous408 the Ps2 was aroung long after the ps3 was released. The PS4 is following Sonys tradition of being supported despite a new generation in play. Unlike Microsoft, Sony does not discard the previous generation and its adopters with their home consoles. This fosters goodwill and confidence to buy their next console as we know it won't be thrown to the side forcing us to buy the next one.

ApocalypseShadow833d ago (Edited 833d ago )

Why not?

PS1- 12 years in production
PS2- 13 years in production
PS3- 11 years in production
PS4- 9 years in production

With the average of 100 million sold.

I wouldn't believe the Bloomberg article without putting it into context. Sony has supported consoles for an average of 10 years. That's what they have always done if it's still profitable. Doesn't mean they don't move on to new hardware and new games while the previous one is still selling.

Unlike their competitor, Sony doesn't abandon their home hardware as they usually push 10 year production cycles. Microsoft likes to abandon a generation only to rebrand from a poor, previous generation. Expensive Nvidia Xbox, RROD 360, their always online idea with Xbox one where they got stomped. It's what they do.

Nothing new that they would throw in the towel even though previously they believed in 10 year lifecycles.

CrimsonWing69833d ago

Yea but how many cross-gen games were on PS2 when it launched? Or how many cross-gen games were on PS3 when it launched? There’s just something weird feeling when you buy a new console and you’re still mainly playing last-gen games on it.

I think that’s the big difference between this gen and the gen before it. We’re a year into current-gen and it feels like we’re still in last-gen. This goes for Microsoft as well, maybe even more so.

InklingGirl834d ago

I still own my X even though I own a Series X, I love the look of that console.

darthv72834d ago

The special editions are pretty nice. I have like 5 of them.

Zhipp833d ago

Where do you store all these consoles? Do you have a display shelf or something like that?
