Why A PS5 With A Disc Drive Is Worth The Extra Money

The versatility that comes with having a disc drive more than makes up for the additional cost.

Not for me. I haven’t bought a disk in years and saving a $100 was a no brainer.

Z5011271d ago

Being able to buy used games saves money too.

Jin_Sakai1271d ago (Edited 1271d ago )

That true. I have a fiber connection though and like not having to fool with disk. So digital just makes sense for me.

Eidolon1271d ago (Edited 1271d ago )

Not to mention GameFly and other rental services. You can get GameFly for $13.50 a month with 2-games out.

SyntheticForm1271d ago

I'll always buy consoles with disc drives as long as they continue to exist. Though I do make a lot of digital purchases, I like the option.

If I don't have to be limited, I won't be limited.

UltraNova1271d ago

I've recently sold 16 ps4 games I don't need since I got 9 of them from ps+ and 7 of them I've got no intention in revisiting again. I've made 260 euros - half the ps5 price so yeah as long as discs/used market are a thing I'll keep preferring them.

"That true. I have a fiber connection though and like not having to fool with disk. So digital just makes sense for me."

But you're talking about saving money.. Discs save money and hold a value. I think you're just making excuses to make an instant savings of $100.

Jin_Sakai1271d ago (Edited 1271d ago )

I said that I don’t like fooling with disk also. Saving a $100 upfront was a bonus.

Eidolon1271d ago

"not fooling with disc". Sounds like you'd be a type or person that does spend extra money for convenience.

NotoriousWhiz1271d ago

He says he hasn't bought a disk in years. Why pay for something he's not going to use?

Eidolon1271d ago

Because he's already subscribed to his justifications and actually doesn't care about saving money.

Who wants to get up and change discs constantly? If you are bragging about a fast SSD and taking the time to get up and swap discs, you are sorely missing the point...

Eidolon1271d ago (Edited 1271d ago )

That SSD is going to fill up quick regardless, everything is installed to the SSD. Discs are just a transferable license to play the game. Again you are still saving way more than going all digital. Who said anything about going ALL DISC? It's an option, and a great one.

BlaqMagiq11270d ago

If you have a problem with getting up and swapping discs you are lazy, fact. That's not a negative, that's a you problem.

1270d ago
yeahokwhatever1270d ago

all the time? huh? how lazy are you? lol

GamerRN1269d ago

You talk about fast load times... If you have to swap discs, you negate those load times

I have around 80 games on ps4, 79 of them digital. So I will stick with digital ps5 as well.

Eidolon1271d ago (Edited 1271d ago )

I have way more than that, you're most likely counting stuff that isn't even on physical or on limited run at best and PS+ games. In that case, my library is at least 120. With 20 physical discs currently(sold, gave, lent some) which have all saved me over $100, very easily, definitely a lot more. And not that I got around to playing them all. I know people go crazier with the disc collection. However, most I don't have the case, but I'm not a collector.

Sunny123451271d ago

I counted the ones I bought on psn store. Not counting plus games. My total library is over 400 if I include psn plus freebies. I share an account with my friends he shares with me. So overall its cheaper than discs.

Eidolon1271d ago (Edited 1271d ago )

How are you going to say your library increases by 320 if you include PS+ Freebies. Are you including PS3 and PS Vita, I'm not. 120 for me is digital, and 20 discs. I share with my brother on digital if he's interested, or if it's a good online game to play with someone, but we're still much more frugal when it comes to full priced software, unless it's something we really want(pretty rare will will justify that giving our backlog). Hence why used disc is the best bang for buck, they're usually much cheaper than digital, and you can lend or resell. I am never playing the same SP game as my bro simultaneously.

Sunny123451271d ago

I never bothered to count manually how many games I have. There is a ticker under your psn name that shows the number of games. I used to collect steel books, but now only the exclusive figurines. I have 99 platinums right now, and I am very picky in what to platinum, so you can imagine how many games I play. Plus the whole hassle of switching discs, discs gone bad, etc. I am content with all my media being digital.

Eidolon1271d ago

ah I only have 35 plats, my brother has 45. When he goes for it he goes for it. I buy most the games so I'm more committed to just beating the games first and if there are missables that aren't a hassle or don't require a second playthrough, I'll go for it. Haven't had much time to brute through my backlog, though. It's shrinking as they're becoming free on PS+ or PS Now, now.

yeahokwhatever1270d ago

I have 400 PS4 games, about 30 of them are physical. All of the games I think are going to be really great, i buy on a disc. because 20 years from now i wanna be able to dust off my old playstations and maybe play through some of the future classics without any kind of hassle.

You may save on the console when buying it but in the long run you'll lose money by going digital only. With disk you can get the game considerably cheaper than you would digitally almost every single time. If you're happy to spend 15-20 more on the same game you could buy cheaper physically then happy days, but for the most part, digital will always be more expensive on consoles.

Ausbo1271d ago

Yeah I agree. Unfortunately it was either get the disc version or wait till 2021 and I couldn’t wait. Disc for me

Kornholic1271d ago

Lol, if you have bought digital only, you have lost a lot of money over the years. A lot of money.

The Last of Us 2 was 70 euros on PS Store on release day. I paid 50 euros for a physical copy the day it released. That's already 20 euros I saved buying physical.

Muigi1271d ago

Lol getting my PS5 with the disk drive was a no brainer for me.

CptDville1271d ago

Why so many downvotes? It's his personal opinion.

I'm far from agreeing with it (actually think this type is people will eventually screw up game prices and ownerships even more), but nevertheless he is entitled to do whatever he wants.

NotoriousWhiz1271d ago

Options are only good if it's the option I'd choose.

Rocosaurus1271d ago

Digital is also better for the environment. Less plastic garbage around.

eddieistheillest1270d ago

@jin I’m with you. Digital edition was definitely my choice. Plus I’ve seen and bought game on sale digitally that we’re cheaper than the used version of the game.

SmoothC9111270d ago

Not sure why you got downvoted. I mean if you prefer all digital and don’t mind paying more for the convenience, then go for it—good for you

I have physical ps4 games so ofc Ill get the disk version. That and walmart be selling new ps5 games at $10-$20 cheaper so that price increase doesnt really affect me lol.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi1271d ago

I certainly understand the allure of discless. I almost went discless to save that 100 bucks. But alas I bought too many games this gen on disc and I want to see how they look on ps5 with the upgrade.

mechethegoat1271d ago

This may be true and the disc version is wayyy easier to obtain

Former Deviation Games Devs Have Formed A New Studio At PlayStation To Work On A New IP

Well that's an awesome and very surprising turnaround. Cheers to the new studio and what they'll build!

RaidenBlack14h ago

Likely to continue their FPS project

Cacabunga2h ago

It is not about money it is about talent.. get that talent in and they will take care of you and earn you that money

Eonjay2h ago

I had picked up on this before the Deviation shutdown was announced. It was pointed out that a senior manager of the team had joined PlayStation prior to the close. It was a little suspicious because from the outside in, it appeared had basically poached Deviation's talent.

Reading some of the other comments it seems this is understood to be the case.

In other news it would be wild if Sony winds up announcing a brand new internal studio.

isarai12h ago

That's..... confusing, so shut down but just reformed and same employer 🤔 sounds like pretty much what happened to Japan Studio basically just being rebranded as Asobi

ocelot0712h ago

It is odd one I don't know how business deals work or the law of that kind of stuff. But is it possible Sony reached out and said hey we want you apart of Sony but don't want to purchase you for what ever reason. How about use disband and we will open a studio and hire you guys type of thing. Is that even possible?

isarai11h ago

Maybe it's to void/bypass some contract? I have no clue

VersusDMC7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

I guess the deviation team fell apart and didn't deliver good progress on what they pitched (they overhyped themselves when the team was announced)so Sony shut them down. They regrouped with a new team and a new pitch so Sony is giving them another shot.

And this time they are keeping it quiet to keep pressure down on the team. So people aren't asking everyday what deviation(or whatever the new team is called) is doing.

Edit: Also Sony never owned them. They just ended their partnership with them. Deviation decided to close on their own.

outsider16247h ago

Good point. You know, i was thinking of Days Gone too. They pitch an idea to Sony for Days Gone 2 but Sony didnt like it do they scrapped the whole thing. Maybe if a good pitch came by...they'd reconsider it.

isarai6h ago

That makes a bit more sense

lodossrage5h ago

To be fair, Sony didn't shut them down. Devation was independent. Sony pulled funding on the project they were working on. As a result, they couldn't run so Devation decided to close on their own.

roboteye7h ago

If this was MS they'd be gone.

Goodguy017h ago

Maybe make a smaller game this time?

Elda6h ago

Good for them that they were able to work it out. Hopefully they're developing something interesting.

Rainbowcookie6h ago

I think Sony is thinking long term as a replacement for Call of Duty M$ edition.
