[Rumor] Date of Rise of the Tomb Raider for PlayStation 4 revealed

The site of the store GameStop Italy has been updated and it was added to the sale list the version for PlayStation 4 Rise of the Tomb Raider.

I did like the first reboot. However the game is a year old and it's worth less today that it was at launch. I'm willing to pay what the XB1 version costs for the vanilla version of the game. If the game is packed with DLC and extra content then I'll be willing to pay more for it.

When you say, it's not worth that much because it's a year old game, then you'll have explained to yourself, what it is you're asking Dragon to explain to you.

Face it, SE knows this game isn't worth $60 anymore on the X1, so why should it be worth more on the PS4? Maybe some included DLC, but not everyone really values DLC that highly. Even if they did, GOTY editions of games with all the DLC routinely come in at $40....not $60, because they're typically year old games.

It is not a year old game on the PS4 it is a new game on that platform. It will probably include all the DLC as well and ROTR is worth the money as it is one of the best games this gen. You guys pay full price for "remasters" so I don't see the problem of paying full price of a new game that never been on Playstation.

It's hard to say if the negative feelings that the more informed forum goers and social media purveyors will really translate to the same disdain among the general mass market. There are many who may just see it as a new release, and end up buying it, because it wasn't available before. I think SE left a lot off the table though with the deal, because they lost out a lot of people who would have brought it day one a year ago at full price. But it being an old game, plenty of exposure on what it consists of, and general feelings of discontent, it's not going to be anywhere near as big a seller on PS4....or at least, it won't see the same kind of revenues since many may wait it out to buy it at a cheaper price.

Not sure SE is too concerned about it though. MS likely cut them a rather sizable check to make this happen, which will probably make up for whatever losses they incur. In the meantime, they gained whatever exclusive bump they could on X1, which ironically, really wasn't that much anyhow.

While true, Capcom's DmC did suffer terribly in sales as the internet went up in a uproar over the series possible new direction. This could be a similar situation, the difference being gamers may still buy TR once it is cheaper.

I agree about the check from MS, SE better hope it makes up for the foreshadowing (comments over the internet) of lack of sales this game may get on the PS4 side.

I understand the price thing, but it's practically a new game to PS4 players that have yet to play it, a new audience. But I get where many are coming from when they say they don't want to pay full price for an old game, however I don't don't see SE doing that especially since we've seen remasters of old games release at a $60 price tag. If that's what most are concerned about then that's ok, but I don't honestly believe that, it feels as though most are still salty over the exclusive deal they signed with MS. It took a year but we'll all get to play it, besides I'm certain SE won't make that mistake again, the uproar was heard loud and clear. I'm sure some people are still upset about it, and that's their prerogative. Not really being salty, because I can understand that some people would take offense at what happened, particularly if they've been supportive of the franchise for years. On top of that, SE marketed this game as a multi-plat, and the only reason it went exclusive was so MS could have something to go up against UC4....by Spencer's own admission. Being that SE was complicit in accepting a check to allow MS to do it, all while not considering a rather sizable portion of it's fan base, is just one of many things that people have criticized about SE for quite a few years, where they seem more interested in everything but delivering the games that fans seem to want....and in some ways, we see this reflected in the sales of said games, because they don't live up to sales expectations.

Whatever their reasons though, many just aren't willing to pay full price for the game, and it's obvious that many see it as an old game. It may just be a justification for some, but it's not an unreasonable one, and given the circumstances surrounding this game, it's easy to see why some people may value it less than what a company may value it at.

Remasters are another thing from timed exclusives. The money spent on making the PS4 version would have been spent either way, because it was already intended to release on the PS4, so, as far as I'm concerned, I'll consider it MS subsidized the release price of ROTTR for those getting it a year later on the PS4. Remasters themselves have work put into them, and sometimes additional content. They may be old games, or even as recent as a year or two old, but there is more to them than just the initial release. SE may include DLC, or even some exclusive new content, but people will value that on their own perspective of worth.

I won't discourage anyone from playing the game. It is quite good. I could make some criticisms about it, but the overall game is a very good experience. I would even encourage people that liked the reboot, or are just into these kinds of games and didn't play the reboot, to also try it out. They can decide for themselves what it's worth, but personally, I don't see it as being a new release. The hype isn't there anymore. We've had exposure to it, so we know things that happen in it. If one payed enough attention, many of the new experiences would have a lessened impact, etc. The, "it's new to me" just doesn't work for everyone, and for me personally, I was willing to pay $60 when it was actually new, but since I couldn't do that, it's no longer new, simply a game I put off buying.

I had an X1 when the game released. I could have easily brought the game and not thought twice about it. But for the most part, paid time exclusives are not a industry standard that I care to support with day one purchases, or rewarding a publisher for withholding content from a fan base for nothing more than a check and some consideration for outside publicity marketing. There are other kinds of timed exclusives which are acceptable(not paid for but solely publisher decided), but this is one that is not.

For my part, I got a code to download it for PC directly from a source connected to the development of the game, otherwise, I probably wouldn't have played it yet. My system was right at the min specs, so probably will have a better experience on the consoles. Even if I hadn't played it though, I wouldn't support the practice of paid timed exclusives by "rewarding" SE with a full price purchase. I can't think of any paid timed exclusive from any company I've ever supported knowingly....although I probably have done so unwittingly as I buy a lot of games.

Not sure if you realize, but no matter how good of an experience the new TR might offer, there are a ton of great games being released around it (the month before and after as well).

If it was released this month or in the next then it might of had an increase in possible sales.

Fans are split

However, liking sales to use them to wage fanboy wars isn't a good reason to care for it.

Eh, no. principles still matter. If we all do what you say then SE will think "Great! they still bought the game AND we got that sweet MS cash! we should do this more often." The only way I see to see the right message is to only buy it at 50% or more off the X1's original $60 price tag.

SE and Crystal Dynamics were happy to ignore Playstation fans who have supported the franchise from the beginning when they were offered money to turn ROTR into a timed exclusive for the Xbone. Playstation gamers have been forced to wait a year to play the game so I suggest that we can wait a few months longer and buy the game when it is dropped into bargain bins. After all, with so many current and new releases to look forward to, why should fans who were unimportant a year ago be expected to support the game and pay full price for the privilege of playing an old game.

I've debated this in my head a long while.

Option A: Buy the game, at full cost, at release. -- Does this really tell SE that I didn't like what they did? I mean, to me, it tells them that they could do the same thing later on and we'd still pay full price for the game at date of release as if nothing ever happened.

Option B: Buy the game at half price later down the road. -- Does this really tell SE that I don't like what they did or does it tell them that perhaps not as many people are interested in Lara on PS4? Depends on how they chose to spin it, in the end, it's likely they will blame the gamers for a lack of sales if that is how it turns out.

Option C: Buy the game used over new whenever you can. -- Doesn't work anymore unless you completely ignore DLC. But, would probably be the strongest message to them as it relates to 'using your wallet' to send it. But, it means less money towards future development of whatever game, and, again, the 'PS4 players' will be blamed for any issues later on as they won't make their own decisions the reason for poor sales.

In the end, no matter the outcome, SE will either make it look like it was the right decision because PS4 fans still chose to play it at release or they will blame the players for not picking it up at release or new rather than their own decisions. There is no winning, but I encourage you to do what you feel is best regardless.

K, let them think that. Truthfully, that's their loss, and their own incompetence, and that's stuff we've complained about from SE for a long time...you know...the whole they don't release stuff that the gamers want, and only release stuff that they THINK the gamers want.

People are making it quite clear why they aren't buying the game...whether saying it's because they don't agree with the practice, or simply they aren't willing to buy it at full new release prices. If SE chooses to ignore that, who loses out more going forward?

Answer:

No us. SE will probably still happily take a check if they don't realize where they made a blunder. But they aren't going to ignore a sizable install base like the PS4. If PS4 had been this far ahead when this deal was struck, they probably wouldn't have made it, or it would have cost MS considerably more money. At most, we can simply wait it out for those games we really want to play, and still not pay for price for them. We really lose nothing. SE has the potential to lose out on a lot more....kind of like during all those years they were struggling because people weren't buying their games because they weren't giving people what they wanted.

I personally thought they had come to realize this by now, and were trying to right the ship to focus more on the customers.

Here's the real deal. If the game doesn't sell well on PS4, it's probably not going to get another sequel. Game hasn't sold gang busters already on X1, so why in God's name would SE consider making it exclusive again? PC did decent enough from what I've heard, but still the current sales are significantly lower than what they considered disappointing with the last one.

Will we lose out on a sequel? Yes, everyone loses....all because SE disregarded a fan base. But sure...blame the PS fans. Way to stick up for the consumer there buddy.

Buying used, or when it's a reduced price but then sending a tweet to their twitter or write a message on their forums...or however you can add your voice to any discontent...will send the message clear enough.

Just say something like, "Finally got this game. Would have brought it at launch but SE restricted it's release. Looking forward to playing it, but certainly don't like SE not caring about this long term fan".

Then maybe send a tweet to Spencer thanking him for subsidizing the costs for PS4 users, since you got it cheaper than the Xbox users did.

I know it's idealistic, but if enough people do it, then it actually can have an effect. I've already sent them a email about it back when this all started saying I didn't appreciate it. Ended up getting a code for the PC eventually due to connections when I was kind of complaining about the whole thing to them as part of another discussion....but sadly, that experience wouldn't be typical for most.

I know this question may be hard to answer because there are some things that we dont know and may never know. But i wonder how many unit could Rise of the Tomb Raider have made if it was released on the PS4 the same time it was released on the X1?

Well....at least they didn't have to compete against UC4. Worst money MS ever spent on an exclusive. They didn't need it to compete against UC4 due to the delay. Releasing it this year...well, now they kind of have to compete on the residual hype of UC4, which will likely see some momentum come the holiday season...particularly if a slim bundle gets released....and then there was that bundle with 4 UC games, Until Dawn, and Bloodborne included....so yeah, gonna be tough this holiday for SE.

because of this, I actually think they are going to release it as a kind of GOTY or Definitive edition for around $40. SE isn't really dumb....but they have surprised me in the past with some of their dumb decisions, so who knows.

It looked great at release and addressed a lot of the problems I had about the original (most of which could be summed up as "Where are the tombs?"), so I'll definitely pick it up if it's below 60.
