The only Alone in the dark game I have played is The New Nightmare and I was very impressed with it. In fact, no Resident Evil game was as close to capturing that gothic horror feel until the Cube remake of the first RE game. But it wasn't just a Lovecraftian kind of gothic horror. Games like Alone in the dark pre-date the art deco and 1950s attention to detail in games like Bioshock and Resident Evil picked up on these influences.

The New Nightmare got some quite high reviews...

I agree Lachance. Resident Evil 4, to be honest, was relatively disappointing for me to start with. If they were going to get rid of so much of the puzzle aspects, then the action had to greatly compensate for it- and it did to an extent but, right from the start, it is clear how linear and pre-set your world really is- it won't let you go back across the bridge- it won't let you shoot the glass of the car containing those 2 men. Furthermore, the village area is grainy and brown, a world away...

There are so many great 8 bit and 16 bit games that, as far as most people seem to be concerned, might as well never have existed, games that have no true equivalents, apart from ports, in the Playstation era and beyond.

You would have thought from these lists that the only good 2D platformers ever made all starred Mario and Sonic. At least Crash Bandicoot got a mention this time but I would have voted for Crash Team Racing (even better than any Mario Kart game to me).

Do you really think that using phrases like 'mother ******' makes you sound particularly intelligent yourself?

This day has been a long time coming. The Dizzy series in particular was a favourite of mine. They also made a Dizzy-like character, now seemingly forgotten by most people, called 'Seymour'- there's a relatively long article about him on Wikipedia actually- I remember liking 'Seymour at the movies/Seymour goes to Hollywood'. though finding it tough: http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
They made some other platform gam...

The only reason that they give why Tomorrow Never Dies was a disappointment is that there was no multiplayer. I know that lots of people like multiplayer but, if the single player game is great, then you still have a great game. I haven't played the game- what was bad about the single player game?

There may be scarier villains than Pyramid Head but, in my opinion, he's the most popularly iconic SCARY villain I can think of- that's in any medium, not just videogames.

However Le Chuck from the Monkey Island series is my favourite semi-comical villain.

However, the most truly scary villain to me is another one from Resident Evil 4, and I didn't know why he doesn't get mentioned- Verdugo, a towering alien-like creature with piercing eyes who keeps chasing you ...

Bama said that Nintendo has been around for about 30 years. They've existed since 1889, originally as a playing card company, but in terms of producing videogames it's about true.

Shakka, in my opinion Crash Team Racing is better than any Mario Kart game so I share your love of the PS1 Crash games.

Resident Evil didn't quite create survival horror. Alone in the dark gets the credit for that.

I can accept that most people don't share my love of the platformer genre above most others, to the extent that most of my choices would be platformers, 2D and 3D. What I can't accept is that these lists are written by such conceited people that they confidently, declare, as if it is an objective fact, that these ARE the greatest games of all time, as if it is carved in stone like some 10 commandments. They also frequently only pick platformers made by Miyamoto or starring Sonic. Well, they m...

What about Donkey Kong Racing for the Gamecube?

Obviously, several games originally destined for the Gamecube like Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo ended up on the Xbox360 but, as the Donkey Kong character is owned by Nintendo, this game ended up no more. It is still not known whether they ever made any of the actual game (probably not) or whether they only ever made this video:

http://www.youtube.com/...

I know that's it's human nature to pick out the things that we can criticise but, well OK, I'm going to do it:

"Despite owning only 32.3% of the overall sales margin of the current handheld war, Sony’s mini-Playstation is the highest grossing portable gaming system not manufactured by Nintendo."

They are essentially saying that they are surprised that a company with more than 32.3% hasn't overtaken the PSP, to put the PSP in third place. But there are n...

Regarding British gaming, there were some great game on the Commodore 64 and Amiga. Apart from some arcade Japanese games, like The New Zealand Story and Rainbow Islands, which were often ported by British studio Ocean Software, it was mostly entirely great British games with the odd American game like the Lucasarts Monkey Island series.

In the mid 90s, as games were moving into 3D, most British studios, apart from Rare, either went bust or were bought up by larger studios and ...

"I think Rockstar's core tenet, actually, is to force people to consider moral depravity, not to beg them to embrace it."

I think that internet forums show that this isn't the effect, if it was ever meant to be the case, which I doubt. GTA was always cartoon stuff.

How many forums are full of players expressing concern for the safety of the kinds of people represented in a GTA game? There's at least 9/1 against that viewpoint. I've seem scores of people...

Tmac, you said:

'However Eurogamer and Edge share the shame staff, realistically I expect their view to shared.'

I think that you probably mean the 'same' staff but if it's a Freudian slip it's a very good one.

First of all, can be we be sure that the article is true?

A lot of people think that we already knew that 2K Boston had lied to us because they claim to remember reading the company say that 'Bioshock will never come to the PS3'. They never said that- videogame website writers interpreted 2K Boston's comments as meaning that. What 2K Boston actually said is that there were no secret plans for Bioshock to come to the PS3. This is different from saying that they have 100% ruled ...

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door belongs on that list in my opinion.

I don't know why there is frequently such disdain for 1080 Avalanche. If you want a tricks game you probably won't like it- instead it's a great racer with multiple routes- each course is very different from the last with set pieces and the graphics are great.

Edge magazine gave Banjo Kazooie, a game that some people regard as the best 3D platform game ever, 8/10. They gave Super Mario 64 10/10.

I had more fun in Banjo Kazooie's worlds and fun is a big reason that can keep you going back to a game 10 years after it's been released.

It's maybe a golden age if you like shooters.

As a 2D platformer fan, 1991-1994 was a golden age for me, with a few good ones being released in 1995-1996 eg Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3. Rare are responsible for several of the great 3D platformers so that's 1998-2001 on the N64.

These games most seem to stand out for me in the last couple of years:
The Orange Box, Super Mario Galaxy, Bioshock, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

A string of long aw...
