It was never meant to "fill the void". That's like comparing Half Life with Fallout3, because they both have first person camera. It is a completely different game.

Baka - The Second Story had a far better plot and characters development, it was a classy old school jrpg. if that's cliched and cheesy then so were FF 8 or 9. even TtEoT had a somewhat decent story, it just wasnt very detailed.

now TR games get better and better since 2006's Legend. I'd say more like Lara Croft today is everything she should've been in the 90s.. and last I checked there's practically no exploration in that TR clone you've mentioned. no plausible puzzles either. Not to mention that the next TR is going to be a reboot.

Lolwut? This isn't an opinion. Chrono Trigger isn't even my favourite game. if a game has a better storyline, characters' personalities development and battles - it is better. and popular =/= better. I will not deny FF7 is ONE of the best jrpgs ever made, but the games I 've mentioned are better.

anyway I'd place the first DMC and NG above GoW. However I think DMC deserves more credit than NG because it was the first. it was what Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy were to console rpgs.

That's an opinion. and everyone has a right for that.
But the fact is that say, DMC and NG are different. In the latter you can't do combos like in DMC, and like the jerk himself said the gameplay is quite different. That depends on what you (player) want from the hack and slash.
