The same thing could be said about the ps1 and ps2. Don't tell me you never had to turn your ps1 upside down for it to work. And the ps2 was cheap trash. I owned 4 ps2's in 3 years because of shoddy hardware. Guess what sony did everytime I had a ps2 start acting up? Not a damn thing, I had to buy a brand new console. The 360's hardware problems are frustrating yes, but MS is doing the right thing by consumers.
You guys should do the right thing by your friends, and point out that the ps3 is an inferior game machine to 360. Here are a few links that should help.

I would say that the victory of blu-ray compounded with Wii&360 shortages is what's helping the ps3 in N.A. But once the Wii&360 shortages are over the lionshare of N.A. ps3 sales will be attributed to the ps3's HD movie player. Core gamers in N.A. know that the ps3 can play games, but they also know that the ps3 is inferior to 360 as a game machine. Sony brand loyalists will try to deny that, but 360 has become a household name for gaming.

FUD? For the past year, all but a handful of multi-plats look and perform better on 360. Unlike PR fed sony fanatics who blame the developers, I blame sony for using a cpu that is not geared towards gaming. Anyone that wants to argue this, I would direct to the links below.
