In my opinion, in the "west", there was an immense JRPG and Anime boom that lasted from the 80's to roughly 2012/13, but gaming tastes have shifted toward more western styles of art and story telling, for better or worse. There's still a huge crowd that supports JRPGs, but it's not what it once was.
