PS3 1080 issue still a problem.

I thought i'd bring up a problem that many PS3 owners, including myself, have with the PS3 and our HDTV'S. You see my tv is 1080i only, this means that I can't play a LOT of games in HD on my PS3 because they're 720. The PS3 lacks an internal scaler that would allow folks like me to play games in HD on my set, so its up to the developers. I know for a fact that Naughty Dog included 1080 support in Uncharted because of the gamers posting in the "dev boards" I myself have posted in the Killzone 2 dev boards about this very issue. I want to keep this short because you can find everything you need to know here.

This board is a great resource for gamers in this particular pickle. Included is "the list" of games that do/don't support 1080 as well as how to contact the developers. So if you are one of these people please join us, let Sony know that this is a problem they need to fix, that it won't go away no matter how hard they try.

I have a phatty panasonic hd tv. it is a crt which means it more then likely has a better picture then your lcd. That being said, it is a crt which means 1080i only. The tv is not crappy, its a great set only 2 years old. stop being a dumb a** n00b, that thinks he know more then he does

Hey I have an old Panasonic 1080i, too. It played R&C, Uncharted, and AC just fine. Just because 40% have older TV doesn't mean 40% have this problem.

i have a 16:9 crt HD TV that is a panasonic. Had awsome reviews on the AVS Forums. Love the set, it works and looks great with everything....besides the ps3. Every HD capable device scales to ones native hd res. That is, besides the PS3. The funny thing is the ps3 will upscale dvd's, ps1 and ps2 games and bluray movies will automatically play in 1080i even if you have the option of 720p on your set. It is only the ps3 games that get bumped down. The new gen games....Hey SONY arent the games the most important piece to your puzzle?? It is a games machine.

I have a slightly old (3 years) Panasonic 50" 1080i HDTV; I've never had this problem with any PS3 games.

Try buying a TV made in the last decade, or just don't skimp and get old CRT HDTVs. Even then, if you shop around like any intelligent person would do, you can find CRTs that support/accept 720p, whether they display it natively, or scale it to 1080i internally.

You made a bad decision, deal with it, and quit crying. The game do 720p, your TV doesn't. Don't like it, go buy a 360.

1) You TV manufacturer - Selling a TV w/o a scaler that can take a 720 signal and upconvert to 1080 is a crappy deal by THEM. They probably left the scaler out to save money and sell the unit at a lower price... aka just like SONY.

2) You - It's your fault because you either didn't research the TV enough to know it didn't support 720. Or you are an early adopter. Early adopters take a risk. You knew that going in. Just like buying a HDDVD or Blu Ray player before the format war is decided. If you lay your money on the table in a poker game and lose it, that's your fault. You knew that was a chance and you accepted that and put your money down anyway.

3) Sony - They are to blame as well. They left the scaler out to probably save money on production costs. And early on they were charging $600 and still taking a loss on each PS3. So I can understand it.

You could try buying a external scaler ( very expensive last I checked), but hey you are probably an early adopter and you have the cash to spare :).

I just thought this blog post tries to lay all the blame at one persons feet when there are plenty of people to blame for it. Your TV company didn't put in a scaler and neither did Sony, but you are only yelling at Sony.

PS: I hope Sony fixes it for you.

Its never good to be an early adopter.... 1080p is the true standard in HD television and will be in every T.V. over the nexy decade and more...especially now with Blu Ray.

I really can't believe the damage control in here. If it weren't for the early adopters of HDTV's then the technology wouldn't have gone anywhere. Same as every other tech. Why should I have to buy a new tv, mine looks as good as any LCD. You say 1080 is the standard? Then why is like every PS3 game 720p? I'm looking at 3 useless games in my collection right now because of no upscaling. Motorstorm, UTIII and COD 3. COD 3 even has 1080i listed as being supported but its a f**kin misprint. I never had or will ever have this problem with my 360. Why? Because it has an internal scaler. Like I said, if the 360 can do it, the PS3 should as well. After all that babble about true high-def and 1080 the PS3 can't even upscale? Sony is the one to blame for this, they PROMISED to fix it and did nothing.

Those games aren't useless, You just have to play 'em at 480p because your TV sucks.

As for all the talk about "true HD" You're talking about 1080i, "true HD" is 1080p, quite different. Also, upscaling doesn't make something any more or less HD. in fact, upscaling is detrimental to attaining "true HD" because developers can just be lazy and upscale the game, rather than optimising enough to get a real HD resolution.

To be fair, the PS3 has FAR more 1080 NATIVE games than the 360 does. So, Sony has delivered on the "true HD" promise more than anyone else to date. Sure, the 360 can upscale anything to 1080p, but it's still just 720p (or less) stretched to 1080.

Did you make this post as a warning or to damage Sony's growing reputation? This is hardly damage control when the problem is not so far stretched that I see PS3 owners returning their console left and right from an epidemic.

And as for it being Sony's fault because they promised to look into it, I ask you not be so hypocritical at Sony being the only company without so much free time. Isn't there any other company that has had a much worse hardware problem and has been trying to fix it across two revisions now to only some success? I ask that you give Sony some time in this, the solution may not be as simple as you might imagine since it doesn't happen to all HDTVs.

The 360 has a hardware scaler chip so it can scale games out to HD resolutions. Halo 3 @ 640P, CoD4 @ 600P, Hell just try playing Gears of War in 1080P! The jaggies are definitely noticeable.

This is from personal experience with an HDMI 360 Premium (trying both component and HDMI) on a Westinghouse LVM-37W3SE 37" 1080P LCD TV. The funny thing is that when my 360 is connected via HDMI, the graphics look "washed out" with the same settings as used for component in. I ended up going back to component hookup over that issue. I now keep my 360 set up for 720P, it looks best that way.

While it does suck that you are running into this issue, there is a chance that it could be resolved by future firmware updates or game updates. I originally had the flashing screen issue when using HDMI, but PS3 firmware 1.6 fixed that for me.

the funny thing is most of your comments are not true at all.
the fact of the matter is that most new hdtv's sold are only 1080i.
and some are only 720p, so in order to get the full hd experience you have to do your home work on what tv is right for you.

now it is not a tv problem that the ps3 has. it is a problem with sony and the devs of games.
these two people have to work together and make the ps3 upscale games and make games native 1080 for all to enjoy.
this system was supposed to be the next gen system for full hd.
but the fact is this is not the next gen system that we were misled into believeing.
in fact to most of us who paid full price for this system are getting cheated whether you have a full hd tv or just a 720p tv.
because no matter how you look at it we are all getting screwed out of the best graphical games we could ever see.

because they are not native 1080i/p, now i know there are people who will say that it will kill framrates and so on.

well i have this to say to you, sony released a new sdk to the devs.
and this will allow them to implement 1080i/p easier.
without loosing fps or much while giving us what we paid for.

so we all have to stick together on this issue to get it fixed or else we may never see what the ps3 is truly capable of.

because people keep saying it is the tv not the ps3 or the devs but it truly is the devs and the ps3's fault.

But just because your an early adopter doesn't mean there is not a risk involved. Look at the HDDVD buyers. Their screwed completely. Also early adopters do it because of selfish reasons or because they have a vested interest. Early adopters didn't go out selflessly and get a HDTV so everyone else in the future could get it cheaper. You took a risk for your own selfish reasons and now there has been some consequence.

FOX and ESPN both broadcast in 720p. So if you did your research then you knew that there was content out there that was 720 and it could possibly be the achillies heel of the TV you bought. So you knew there was a chance.

All that being said, I agree that Sony should fix it. But your posts are all SONY SONY SONY. No mention of you or your TV manufacture. I guess you aren't yelling at your TV manufacture because you know they aren't going to fix it, so that leave you and Sony. Of course you want Sony to solve the issue because it's the best solution to the problem for you. I understand that. But own up to the situation.

espn and fox broadcast in 1080i.
why would they only show their shows and sports in 720p.

they might broadcast in 720p where you live but not where i live.
and sony did put one in but then they took it out.
and another thing the tv does some upscaling if you have a good enough tv.

i don't have this problem that most people have.
i am supporting it because i feel cheated just like they do.

i bought a 47 inch 1080p full hd tv.
that has all resolutions, and i cannot play any decent games on the ps3 in 1080p. except the exceptionally short cod4.
but that is just upscaled to 1080p. i would like to see native 1080i/p games.
that way we can set the games resolution to what we want to play it on.

the early adopters are kicking them selves right now, at least the ones who don't want to fork over more money on a new gen hdtv or can't fork over some green.

but sony did say the ps3 was supposed to be a full hd system and they did lie to us.

so in part it is mostly their fault.

that is a nice tv, but i read that it has died on most people after two months.
and as for the pixelation well that is due to your tv being a 37inch with 1080p.
it is to small to handle that kind of resolution.
that is why that happens.
1080p was meant for 42inch and up some are even going to make 1080p mandatory for 47 inches and up.

and most problems with flicker on a hdmi cable are due to the cable going bad somehow or it is getting interference from other electronics which means it is not shielded from them.
