Disclaimer: the following is not an opinion therefore, I shall state one right now in order to amend such regulations: the PS3 sucks. Take note that that was sarcasm, with a tinge of regret.

It all happened yesterday, when my friend and I were playing a serious level of Dead Nation, and suddenly, the PS3 froze and shut down; only to stare at us with a flashing red light. I quickly read online and discovered that it was an overheating issue, which was strange because we had only been playing the game for approximately 40 minutes (trust me, it was only one level and don't say I'm bad at this game because I already know that).

So, I decided to reboot it while holding down the power button in order to attain the reset option. The PS3 shut down and gave me the blinking red light. I attempted to start it in Safe Mode, but that too failed. It provided me with the screen; however, as soon as I began pressing the D-pad on my DS3, the system shut down. After a couple of hours of just leaving the system alone, I attempted again, and instead it gave me a yellow light for less than a second before going back to the flashing red light. Also, the fan doesn't seem to be working which perhaps is the biggest issue.

Oh, it's probably smart to say that this baby was a 60 GB launch model, right from day 1. It's a system I absolutely cherish, but now I'm afraid that if I send it in, they will give me a different model. Which is fine, but the real crunch pertains to all my save data, which I refuse to do all over again!

I contemplated on purchasing a newer, slim model, but the lady at Sony Customer Service told me that if I swap the HDD that is in my broken PS3 and insert it into the new PS3, the new PS3 would automatically reformat the Harddrive, literally effacing all that invested time.

In essence, I'm rather confused or hesitant about which course of action to take. Have any of you guys faced such situations and what did you do? From now on, I will regularly back-up my hard drive. Learning sucks!

I've been in the exact same situation (in fact it was around a year ago) myself. This might be more suitable to a forum post but I'll post this here anyway.

60GB models have been dying off for a long time and I too was more worried about losing all my save files moreso than worrying about losing my backward compatibility despite the fact I still used that function a lot. I read online about a few different tricks that can help you get it up and running at least for a few minutes (lasted me a day) to get your save data on to an external HD and the one that worked was the hairdryer trick where you basically heat up your PS3 for a while with a hairdryer and allow it to cool and viola it should probably be working. I wrote out a fairly long message to someone before detailing what I did myself to get mine working so I'll PM you with that too incase you want to try it out. I'm not guaranteeing it will work since it could be a different problem but I helped someone else solve a similar problem with the same method so it's pretty decent.

Eventually anyway I was annoyed that for something I spent €600 on it broke down fairly soon (I don't call less than 5 years for a next-gen console a good of merchantable quality) and contacted the national consumers agency to see if I had a case (and they told me I did) and after contacting the store I bought it from and going through a rather lengthy process of waiting I eventually got €225 back in a gift voucher off of a new slim which only costed me €75 more (I actually wrote a blog about consumer rights and whatnot regarding consoles and the likes where most people wrote me off as just being deluded and acting childish over trying to get money back over something I didn't deserve but I knew what I was doing and the waiting and effort paid off). It depends if you have your receipt and how long ago you bought it but you could try the same thing if you wished if you have a reasonable case.

It happens man, thats why i make a backup at least once a month....... or well used to, now i just upload all my gamesaves with ps plus cloud service....

I've gone through 2 Ps3's sadly it was the overheating issue but also it was that I was playing in the summer with My AC off while the room was already dang hot lol.

PHOEBUS5029d ago

Yeah, it was only GT5 that I was going crazy about having to invest all that time again. But now, I've come to terms with it. At least I can redownload all my HDD games without paying for them again.

Phew, I have a launch PS2 and a PSP and they are both working fine (knocking on wood). Hopefully, such an incident will not happen with PS4 (for me at least).

consolez_FTW5028d ago

Yep, this happened to my 1st 40gig model. I was playing Half Life 2 years ago and boom! The game froze and my ps3 was dead...Good thing sony replaced it free though. I just had to accept losing alot of saved data..

C_Menz5028d ago

You just have to accept that all of your saves are lost and learn from it(or attempt to fix it so you can quickly back them up). Happened to me last year and it sucked, but after a week or two I got over it and it was not that big of a deal. I was halfway through ME2 at the time also so keep in mind how pissed off I was.

So take some time in deciding what you want to do, you can...

1)Send it in for repair
2)Buy a new PS3
3)Don't buy anything until new consoles release
4)360/PC gaming

Personally I bought a new ps3, and then got a PC for gaming so I don't have to deal with many of the problems console gaming has, but I do still have my ps3 for exclusives and such.

If the full game isn’t on disc it’s not any different than a downloaded code.

Vits9h ago

Yep, and that’s been the case for Xbox for at least a decade now.
No doubt they alienated their physical media fans, but that happened way back with the Xbox One. What they’re alienating now are just the box collectors.

Well now that their games are on PS, they are alienating the PS fanbase. I would've gotten Doom had it been on disc. If Gears isn't on disc I won't be getting it either. Same goes for any other 3rd party games.

Speaking for myself... I pretty much stopped buying physical. Unless its some cool collector edition. I find it easier to just buy from the respective eshop.... if its not on a rental service that is.

Going into the 7th gen I was staunchly against the idea of digital game. Even the few PC games I played were physical. It wasn't until digital only games starting catching my eye that I changed my mind. Now I buy mostly digital these days out of convenience but also because I have too many phyical games. SNES, GG, GB, GBA, N64, Dreamcast, DS, 3DS, GCN, Wii, Wii U, PS1-5 and Switch. That's hoarders level of gaming right there. 🤣

Anyway digital sales in several parts of the world, including here in the US have been on the rise. Factor in the Series S being the go two model for Xbox owners it just makes sense for Microsoft to scale back in regards to physical media. That and Xbox published games stay high on PSN. 😆

Unfortunate really since I am an avid collector of physical on Nintendo consoles and I bought Black Ops 6 on disc.
