Preview: Fate Tectonics: A Prelude To Ruin

From Kyle Gaddo

Fate Tectonics from Golden Gear is a lovable spin on the classic “god game” genre that sees you building a world, but also integrating something akin to a dating simulator where you simultaneously court several beings of immense power (the Fates) in order to placate them while you micromanage a working world. A mouthful, eh? That is, however, the shortest explanation of Fate Tectonics.

The game is simple, allowing you access to a very large, very black grid of nothingness wherein you must place your 1x1 tiles in order to create a large ecosystem (made of much smaller ecosystems) to keep your Fates pleased, lest they become upset and release the closest thing to a natural disaster. There is a certain finesse that must be attained coupled with a deft and speedy hand to not only create, but maintain balance in this brave new world.

Let me just say that I am very bad at Fate Tectonics. In my time spent with the title, I have only managed to build worlds that housed two Fates—Penelope and Barnaclese—before having my timer run out and ruin brought forth. To my understanding, there are six Fates in the current build, with ten total planned for the final release. I am not fast or clever at things of this nature, but I won't deny having loads of fun (in between bouts of panic and frustration). I have, unfortunately, never had the third Fate of creation anywhere on my maps, but I have had the looming lady Doom hover around and tease me with her presence as my precious seconds tick away.

Fate Tectonics—its story mode, at least—gives me anxiety. Not the full short-of-breath-oh-gods-the-wo rld-is-ending kind, but the kind of subtle anxious tug where I know my time is limited and I have so much to do in so little time. It's not necessarily a bad feeling, but it's not a good feeling either.

Precariously placing tiles that match up to one another in order to craft some mishmash of a grid only to slip slightly and misplace a tile to have it fall and cause damage to surrounding areas, which weakens your overall world and upsets whichever Fates are floating above your budding creation. Matching field and forest and water, trying to keep balance within an allotted time limit only to misinterpret a tile by accident and make a mistake.

No, man. Just no.

Thankfully, there's a “Serenity” mode that allows you to take a more relaxed approach to building your little world. No time limit means no Fates of Destruction hanging overhead which in turn means fewer reasons to panic. No precious moments passing by as you find just the right spot for your tile. You have time to create your world as you feel it was meant to be and only your carelessness is going to be your undoing.

That's right. Serenity Mode doesn't mean that all the near-omnipotent drama subsides. It just means that there's no timer working against you like in Story Mode. You still have to carefully balance the desires and moods of your Fates in order to succeed and see what Golden Gear considers the “endgame” (which doesn't exist just yet due to the lack of remaining fates). There is a great deal to learn about the game, in and out of its whimsical story.

Fate Tectonics is all the love and joy of creation with all the misery and pain of seeing it all be crumble before you. It's wonderful, it's frustrating—it's not even finished. For what exists now, however, it's an absolute blast to play and will only become a better, more complex and fulfilling experience in due time. Golden Gear Games have a real winner on their hands.

This looks like an interesting game.

Looks complex and not really that inviting, but that just usually means it's a great game with a lot of depth. I just don't have the time for games that require a long time to be able to play adequately. I hope it's 'streamlined' :)

The game looks like it would be way too complicated for me.

I want everyone to know that Fate Tectonics is actually VERY simple to play, but is difficult to master. Don't be turned off by its seemingly confusing nature. Give it a try!
