Breaking Bad The Game: Must or Bust?

Hello everyone, or at least the Breaking Bad fans in N4G. I am going to talk about the possibility for Breaking Bad video game to exist in our doorsteps and if it is going to be a good idea or not for it to be a full fledged video game.

As of you all know, movie, comic, and/or TV series' video game tie-ins, sadly, normally fail. It isn't until TellTale Games has created The Walking Dead The Game which received critical acclaim from both game critics and a lot of gamers, and it also received many game of the year awards, most notably from Spike's Awards last year which was kind of a shocker since it was an indie game going toe to toe against many triple A games. The Walking Dead was the biggest surprise in the gaming industry of 2012, and the TV series version of the comics got popular so it was a good year for zombie fans.

What about Team Walter White and drug dealers? Breaking Bad has finished its run just recently and Better Call Saul was announced as a spin-off for Breaking Bad which proves that it is still popular enough for the creators to make more content for this amazing TV series. Now there are people asking this special question: Is there going to be a Breaking Bad video game? If so, the what kind of game would it be?

It can be no but don't be sad, you can make Michael from GTA V to look like Walter White and get a RV, you can make your character look and dress as Heisenberg persona of Walter White in GTA Online, or load up a game with a good character editor like The Sims and Saints Row and create a character from the TV series like Jesse Pinkman, the tragic sidekick of Walter White.

It can also be yes, and this is the main point of the blog. What kind of game would it be? How can the developers make a game that would capture the feelings and emotions the TV series had made for the viewers? Would it even succeed just like The Walking Dead The Game did? Or will it be failure on arrival just like some certain games Thor, and The Walking Dead Survival Instinct? All of these question flow in my head and I am going to bring two ideas I have, and the appropriate developers for it.

Let's start from the first idea I have in my mind. TellTale could work on Breaking Bad. TellTale made a trustworthy reputation after the success of The Walking Dead The Game. It could be a good idea to start on it after they finish their run on both The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead Season 2. It could also fail just like Jurassic Park but I am not worried about it that much since I am sure that TellTale Games know what they are best at after The Walking Dead. The proof is the first episode of The Wolf Among Us which was just awesome.

You can play as a new character just like Lee Everett or play as an existing character. I don't feel for Walter White as the protagonist of the game would be a good idea since it will feel as if the game is just a copy for the TV series so why not for a character like Mike to have a moment to shine? He is indeed an interesting character. Anyway, no matter the character you play as, there should be an impact from choices and a convincing narrative story line. Failing in one of them could affect the game dramatically since we don't want to see the exact same incidents and ending from the TV series. Make the canon ending as one of the multiple endings in the game if Breaking Bad fans just want to follow the actions that were made in TV series, and others fans and gamers would do differently and bring a totally different ending. I would give this idea green-light if I was a publisher. This seems like the most appropriate approach for a story driven TV series like Breaking Bad and I don't see why not trying it.

What about a non-linear game? It is another idea I have which I don't favor for some reasons but it is still an idea. Choose a good developers for these kind of games like Rockstar and create a fictional version of Albuquerque, the setting of the TV series, and put a lot of content in it. You have seen what Rockstar did with Los Santos and the people in it in Grand Theft Auto V, it could be as good in an open-world Breaking Bad game. My problems are that it would fail horribly and pronounced as a copy of Grand Theft Auto series, and the content they put in it. Yes, I said put a lot of content in it but which kind of content? Breaking Bad was all about making money from selling pure crystal methamphetamine so it doesn't make sense to see Walter White randomly kill bystanders and steal random cars. Yes, Walter isn't a good guy and he killed people but he isn't as psychotic as Trevor. I personally wouldn't give this idea green-light if I was a publisher but it could be interesting to see if someone is going to play a game of risk with this one.

There are the ideas that I have in my mind and I don't know any other option the gaming industry would do with this critically acclaimed TV series. If you have any other idea as a Breaking Bad fan then please, post it in the comments. Thank you all for reading this blog, and I hope that all of you would like it.

If its gonna happen its gonna be exclusive to Playstation 4, because it is a show produced by Sony pictures. Breaking Bad the game made by Sony Santa Monica studios with Cory Barlog as game director.

It could be an interesting idea but sadly I am going to disagree. It would be more preferable and more profitable for the game to be available across all platforms. SSM is an awesome company and I am a big PS guy but I don't feel that the Breaking Bad game should be made by them and being exclusive to Sony's platforms. PC, Xbox, and hopefully Nintendo users should experience it too if the game is ever going to be made. That's why I chose TellTale and/or Rockstar as the preferable developers.

BUT, if it should be an exclusive, then Quantic Dream would be preferable. They are known for making story driven games. I still don't like the idea of it being exclusive though.

Sony Pictures being involved would have nothing to do with a potential game being a Sony exclusive.

I would rather not see a Breaking Bad game, what would be the point? No genre would really be fitting.

It COULD in theory work as a visual novel. Maybe supplement the story with making meth gameplay (how attentive you're affects the quality), perhaps make some ricin, things like this, though I think it would be a rather shameless cash grab.

"If its gonna happen its gonna be exclusive to Playstation 4, because it is a show produced by Sony pictures"

Spider-man.

There, your ridiculous suggestion is disproven.

NO no no. As much as I would love more Breaking Bad related stuff but no pls.

It's better in the form that it's in. The Walking Dead works because it's a side story, and the plot of the show enables that to be plausible. Breaking Bad is more character focused, and you lose that sense of character if you as a player are controlling them.

I agree with this comment. Breaking Bad wasn't a show that had an emphasis on violence and action like the Walking Dead does. Something like Breaking Bad wouldn't be able to translate very well if at all into a game.

Some things are just best left alone, and Breaking Bad is one of them.

The thing is we don't know who are we going to play as. As I said in the blog post, it isn't a good idea to play as Walter White and his journey to be Heisenberg. Maybe Mike or anyone else besides Walter and maybe Jesse. It could also be entirely new character like Lee Everett.

But you are right about something, Breaking Bad is going to be difficult to execute as a game unlike The Walking Dead. Don't be surprised if there is an incoming game for it though. Let's just hope it is in good hands.

After Prison Break the Game, I say no.

24 The Game wasn't good either but hopefully if BB game is ever made, it will be good. I don't want to see another The Walking Dead Survival Instinct.
