Why Sony should let PS2 fade into gaming heaven.

When will Sony cut the cord on the PS2? It had a RECORD BREAKING run, and it definitely had the best games of the last gen. But now with the PS3 over 2 years into it's life cycle, I believe the time has come to move on and allow the PS2 to be laid to rest...

It's not like I hate the PS2 or anything (I love it!). It's just that, if Sony stopped it's support for the PS2, then it would allow Sony to shift their focus more on the PS3, PSN and PSP. The PS2 has become sort of an anchor, that is slowly dragging Sony's gaming division down. And I know the PS2 continues to SELL well, but not NEARLY like it used to. Besides that money spent on the PS2 and the extra games that the customer buys with their new PS2, could instead be saved up to buy a shiny new PS3.

It's almost like Sony is having their own mini "console war" with each other. And once Sony stops making PS2s and turns their attention to the PS3 and the PSP, we can start seeing more games coming out and probably at a faster rate too.

However, Sony does not have to stop making PS2 games neccessarily. (Say what?!?!?) All they have to do is release their upcoming (and hopefully old) PS2 games on the PSN or the PSP instead. This way we can still enjoy the awesomeness of the PS2's library of games and we can see more quality titles being released on to the PS3, PSN and PSP.

Side Note: If the PS2 has lasted this long, do you think the PS3 has the potential to last even longer?

It's another revenue stream for Sony. It's just like you said in your post the PS2 continues to sell well and I'm sure marketing has stopped working on PS2 ads a long time ago yet it still puts up good numbers for Sony. And with the PS3 not being quite where Sony wants it to be they need to keep using the revenue stream from the PS2 and funnel it into bolstering the PS3.

believe that the PS3 would last longer if not just as long.

My basis on this assumption that it's history is quite similar to the PS2 and the only difference is that now it has a stronger competitor since the last generation. It might not be the console with the most sales hell people may argue it's overall position in the console race might end up in last, but I do believe that it will be the console that many people would be content with having the PS3 given it's multi media capability, even if the next generation comes and the PS4 becomes Sony's next source of gaming the PS3 could still be sold as a Blu-Ray Player/Internet Browser that would be cheaper than the PS4.

History repeats itself. Like when the ps2 came out.It didn't sell while in its first year. Then Sony stopped making Playstation then the Ps2 sales rose.If they stopped the ps2 production (Hopin its later then sooner btw), then we may see a rise on ps3 sales. Then the ps3 will last more then sony life cycle they planned for Ps3.

This is completely correct. They should do the 10-year console lifespan right by not releasing the PS4 until 2016, when the PS3 hits the 10-year mark and dies.
