Considering this is the Playstation Anniversary, I decided to make a list of 10 games that I hold dearly in my heart and enjoyed so very much, I am sure opinions will differ when it comes to making such a list and I am sure there are many awesome games like those but to each his own :), most of those games in the list were loved equally. So lets begin with…
10-Syphon Filter (Ps1)
What can I say about this game beside that this is really one of the best games ever made. The intro was really epic accompanied with an amazing soundtrack, this game was one of the best action games of the Ps1, everything was epic about this game, the levels, the soundtrack, the weapons felt like they packed a punch and most importantly Gabe Logan. The guy was only rivaled by Snake at the time, it’s a shame we didn’t see him last gen. Hopefully we get to see him this gen.
9-Gran Turismo (Ps1)
This was the first game we played on Ps1 because it was bundled with it. I didn’t know anything about it and never really thought I would like it but I was wrong. I loved it, it was actually impressive, the content the game had to offer was huge, the co op was amazing, the levels were highly detailed at the time and the soundtrack was a beast and the cars were great. It deserves to be one of the best selling Playstation games of all time because it really is worth it.
8-Tomb Raider 3 (Ps1)
I am sure everyone who had a Playstation or doesn’t have heard about Lara Croft, one of the most badass female protagonist of all time. The game was really awesome at the time and also considered one of the best adventure games of all time, it had a lot of great things like the butler who followed you literally everywhere in the mansion, that guy was epic, it had a T-Rex which made you feel like a total badass when you defeat him with your pistols while doing billions of back flips, it was really great. The variety in the game was awesome too, you went from India to London to Nevada which had an area 51 so that is cool. The soundtrack was amazing especially the main theme. And while Ioved the reboot so much, I wished it had more sci fi elements or more tombs and puzzles and I really hope they add that in the sequel.
7-Winning Eleven 3 (Ps1)
Back when PES was called Winning Eleven, it had no rival because that game was really the best football there was, Fifa paled in comparison. Along the way Fifa have really upped their game and improved but at the time there was no match for this game. I had a huge amount of fun in this game. Playing co op was great, hearing that Japanese commentator was hilarious. I still play it from time to time and I have to say aside from the graphics I still enjoy it immensely.
6-Silent HILL (Ps1)
The game that was called the main competitor to Resident Evil. The difference was the darker tone it and offcourse the better voice acting and the creepy design of the monster and the idea of people who wanted to create a new world order. Back at the time I never really understood how scary the idea they were trying to make but when I played it when I was older, it really made sense and it got even creepier. The soundtrack was beautiful and creepy and I have to say Akira Yamaoka really nailed it. The story was great, the environment was amazing and I really thought was revolutionary at the time because I don’t think we had that open world environment one Ps1, the monsters design was creepy and scared the $#^& out of me. If you are a Silent Hill fan but haven’t played this one or planning to get Silent Hills, I highly recommend you play this one first to see how amazing this game really used to be.
5-Metal Gear Solid (Ps1)
Before anyone says (HOW DARE YOU PUT THIS AT NO.5 !!??). You need to understand that those games I loved equally so numbers don’t really matter here :). This game revolutionized storytelling in gaming with its amazing voice actors and story. It was one of the few games that actually felt like a mature game at the time meant for adults and I understood its story when I got older but back at the time it was impressive too. It had an amazing graphics, beautiful soundtrack, superb gameplay and effed up bosses like Physco Mantis or the badass Fox. This game was really ahead of its time and even now, few games actually come close to how amazing this was and it was also one of the few stealth games back then which I think that it the game that developers looked up to when they decided to make stealth games. I cant imagine my life with MGS in it and badass Ocelot.
4-Crash Bandicoot 3 (Ps1) While Nintendo had Mario, Sega had Sonic, Sony needed a mascot to rival those two and I am glad this one became their mascot because even though I loved Mario and Sonic so much but Crash was just in a league in his own. He was hilarious and had this super funny dance and the way he dies were pretty funny. Crash 3 is widely considered the best in the series with a great amount in variety in levels and environment. You went under water, flew in the skies, rode a jet ski, got chased by a dinasour, got a piggyback ride from the cute cat Pura. Overall the game was hilariously fun and didn’t have a dull moment. I really wish one day Naughty Dog get their hands on it again and make us another one because it really was one of the best games ever made.
3-Resident Evil (Ps1)
This was the second game we had on the Ps1, back then we had no internet and didn’t know Jack about it. It was also the second game to feature Zombies but this game was the one that made the Zombie genre so popular. It was really scary back then , especially the first encounter with the first Zombie, me and my brothers were like Wtf are we supposed to do and actually got killed by him lol. And lets not forget it had the most epic one liners in gaming history from Barry. The guy was hilarious and his lines was really funny, offcourse at the time because we were scared back then, we never noticed how funny he was but he was badass with his awesome magnum and each time he appears we felt safe. The gameplay was great at the time and still felt great when I finished it yesterday when I was playing it on my Tablet using an emulator. I wish they go back to its roots one day, because it still is loved by many fans.
2-Dino Crisis 2 (Ps1)
Back when Capcom games were all amazing and had an amazing quality. There was no rival for their Resident Evil games except maybe for Silent Hill. Came a game which I think was equally amazing to it and that was Dino Crisis. The game was much more scarier than Resident Evil and had a lot of puzzles and offcourse the awesome creatures, Dinasours, I am sure the people who played this game won't forget the scary entrance of the T-Rex when he breaks the glass. That was classic. The game was a success and so Dino Crisis 2 was made which I personally thought was my favorite Capcom game on the Ps1. The gameplay improved big time, the guns were amazing and different, the monsters variety was amazing too. I remember I used to finish this game twice a day when I had the chance to play it and I finished it countless times. It’s a shame we didn’t see it thrive like Resident Evil but hopefully they announce a reboot or something for it this gen.
1-Parasite Eve 2 (Ps1) Now I am sure some were expecting a Final Fantasy VII or something but honestly as much as I love Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story or some other amazing gem from Square back when all their game were gold. This game was my most favorite and my most played game on Ps1 and highly underrated and was called a Resident Evil 2 clone but to me, this was much more fun. It blended RPG mechanics with action mechanics and it worked. The Soundtrack was beautiful, the graphics were great and the enemies and bosses were great to fight and the gameplay was amazing an d the game had the best handgun ever. It was the PO8 handgun and that weapon was a beast but it had also a great amount of weapons from an Assault Rifle to a Grenade Launcher to Squall Gunblade which was wicked too and my favorite weapon, The HyperVelocity. It had an amazing replay value and 4 difficulties in which each difficulty varies from enemy locations to weapons available to rewards taken from enemies. It was really great and I still play it every year and will play this game every year until I die :).
And there you go folks. Those were my favorite games on Ps1 but I also loved many games on that console because it had so many great game. Hope you enjoyed the blog and let me know what you think about this list and Happy Birthday Playstation. You are still my favorite console.
Travis Bruno of Capsule Computers writes:
"When it comes to a visual novel you never quite know what you’ll be in for. Will it be a straightforward kinetic novel looking to tell its own storyline without player interaction? Could it be one with multiple choices that offer numerous endings or even completely different routes that follow specific characters depending on player choice? Or can it work some other type of mechanic as well, such as offering army commanding or puzzle solving to mix things up even further? This makes the visual novel genre one that, despite having a simple surface, quite a complex one and Blankspace, a visual novel from NoBreadStudio now arriving on consoles via Penguin Pop Games is definitely one that is more than meets the eye, especially at its low entry price."
Good news for looter-shooter fans: the eagerly-awaited Borderlands 4 will now launch more than a week earlier than originally planned.
