Could Google Chrome Be Coming to the PS3?

Well first I have to firmly state that as it stands this is just a rumour! None of this is confirmed, but I thought I would share some recent experiences.

Following on from that, I have to extend my thanks to the people on the European English PlayStation Forums!

So, I'll start this story with a thread from a person who just wanted to say to everyone he/she had a great experience with the customer service from Sony in the UK.

http://tiny.cc/rcfqq

As you can see, the member in question is clearly happy with his/her service. But for those of who either didn't see it or just want to skip to the point, I'll quote you this. The following quote is from the member XJaguar12X, "We then talked about new features and he told me that a rumour around the office was about a PS3 browser upgrade with Chrome."

So at first, I was skeptical. I think you have to be skeptical with all the rumours flying around in the gaming industry. So I let it rest for a bit, until a recent thread came alight offering the question, Google Chrome on PS3?

So this led me to a second link, a link from the BBC.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/...

So the news article reports on Google signing a deal with Sony.

So, where does this bring us? When you put the two together, in my eyes you have a rumour with a bit of weight behind it. A rumour nevertheless, but maybe a rumour that could at least have some potential of being true.

Make of it what you will, but I thought I would just share these thoughts.

Chrome on PS3 is almost a guarantee, with the way Sony & Google have been holding hands lately.I'd say it's more of a matter of when, not if.

gravesg5036d ago

Well chrome is a light browser .. it doesn't eat resources, or has a memory leak.

on limited memory or portable devices, this browser would normally be a no-brainer

theonlylolking5036d ago

I hope so since Chrome is mah favorite.

It is more then that, Sony will be shipping phones with the Android OS and of course you have Google TV in 2011 with Sony being a major partner on that. With the PS3's install base Google TV and Chrome could get a huge market share boost overnight. That and the Life With Playstation is powered by Google, also the Facebook stuff as well. It would be a shock to me if we did not get any of this down the road. You would think if there TVs can do it the PS3 would be able to as well. I have my fingers crossed for a GamesCom announcement regarding this being that is where we saw the last years most major FW update. That and the stuff with FW Patching to make it faster would make it more easy to keep the browser uptoday and other applications assuming it is true.

Take-Two Mandate on Microtransactions: Over-Deliver on Content and the Monetization Will Follow

Take-Two Interactive states their edict on microtransactions has been to over-deliver on content, and the monetization will follow.

Warning. Boatloads of micro transactions coming for GTA VI

To be fair, while GTA Online is monetized heavily both GTA Online and GTA V offer a massive amount of content without paying anything extra. Though I do think GTA Online's optional subscription is bullshit.

Can you please focus on delivering enough quality content to justify the $70 asking price? While I appreciate the idea of over-delivering, it's essential to ensure that the base content itself is worth it. I have concerns that GTA6 might have less single-player content because most of the focus seems to be shifting towards online play and microtransactions.

It's understandable why publishers are capitalizing on microtransactions when they generate billions with relatively little effort compared to traditional content creation. We, as consumers, are partly responsible for this trend. I've seen people spend on FIFA cards as if it's a normal part of the game. Previously, features like player cards and big head mode were earned through gameplay or cheat codes, but now gamers are willing to pay for them, so publishers have no reason not to monetize these features.

It's astonishing that the gaming industry is now more profitable than any other entertainment sector. Yet, despite record-high profits, the industry continues to see increasing levels of greed. It's baffling to hear about record profits followed by significant layoffs of developers. This disconnect makes no sense.

I know it’s unlikely given the size of the industry, but it might take a significant downturn for things to reset. Currently, there are too many decision-makers who lack a genuine understanding of gaming, focusing only on financial spreadsheets. A prime example is Andrew Wilson, the CEO of EA.

It must be a nightmare working at Rockstar in a Production role...dealing with the team egos and those of the V suite. #soulcrush

Take-Two CEO: We're So Focused on Delivering More Value Than We Charge

It's the why we close servers after 2 years, why we re-use the same assets every year, and why we bundle our game with enjoyable microtransactions.
