An N4G Update - How Was Your Weekend?

Hello, fellow N4Gers.

We wanted to give you an update on the issues N4G experienced over the weekend and also apologize for the lack of access to the site.

The issue started with the site being extremely popular in a specific region. So popular that they were requesting a ton from the site. The developers thinking this was the issue did some re-indexing and other things and the problem is fixed, right? No. It seems that wasn't the only issue. Come to find out memory was also an issue. Apparently, our memory for cached data was lower than it should be. So the developers fixed that... and here we are. And we're good. We're back. We're still trending in a specific region, but the site is back to running and isn't experiencing cache memory issues.

We want to thank you for being here to read this and for using N4G and we want to apologize that the site was down most of the weekend. We're sorry you didn't get your news or were unable to post your latest news.

Thank you and good gaming,
Christopher and the BGFG Team

What was the region and why?

Christopher293d ago

Not giving details because that only helps any people who might be doing it NOT because they love N4G, but it's more than likely not the region you're thinking it is.

“Not giving details because that only helps any people who might be doing it NOT because they love N4G“

That makes it sound like a DDoS?

Christopher293d ago

It wasn't. If it was, we would have said as such.

VenomUK293d ago

If not a DDoS attack what would be the reason for requesting page views?

I hope this is now fixed. The last time when there was weeks of errors viewing the site I feel N4G lost some of its audience as there seems to be less people in comments.

The Wood293d ago

UK definitely, not sure about the rest of the EU

Profchaos293d ago (Edited 293d ago )

Bet it was new Zealand look at them sitting there with all their sheep their a Sus lot jk NZ we love you in Australia.

But seriously from experience region doesn't mean much these days as most attacks are generated with bot networks remotely or via VPN and other tech to hide the original location.

Hey, can the topic char limit be increased?

Christopher293d ago

Not at this time. I've reported this limitation in a document on future site updates to the BGFG team, though.

OtterX293d ago

Yes, please! I submit a lot of NintendoLife reviews, and their titles can be a bit wordy, but they're also a good overall summary of the reviews that make you want to read them further. I usually have to find a way to cut out some words and shorten NintendoLife down to just an "NL" at the end.

*Christopher, thanks for at least noting it for a future update!

KyRo293d ago

Has the traffic increased massively in terms of users posting and submitting stories? I feel this place is quite slow at getting news out compared to the old days where it was front news instantly when something quite noticeable happened.

Christopher293d ago (Edited 293d ago )

It's been steady but gaming news isn't as plentiful as it used to be. People aren't promoting their games as early as they used to, less AAA games are being made, people are following algorithms rather than reporting on all news, and we don't have our E3 events anymore as companies move to online streaming events.

Demetrius293d ago (Edited 293d ago )

Then theres folks announcing their games years before it even release. Mainly be gossip news at times

I_am_Batman293d ago

Off topic, but wanted to mention that the autoscroll feature makes it hard to reach the site navigation elements at the bottom of the screen like DarkMode for example. I always autodelete cookies, so I have to reactivate it every time and the autoscroll just pushes it further down.

Christopher293d ago

I don't think the autoscroll is going away. It's best if you go to your profile and scroll from there to the bottom. Don't do it from the home page or a submission.

OtterX293d ago

Speaking of Dark Mode, I like it very much EXCEPT for the Scores on our About pages. That yellow is so bright that I can barely see the numbers. Can you guys make that more legible?

Battlefield Labs PS5 Pre-Alpha Touts 60fps, Weaker Aim Assist Compared to COD, M&K Allegedly Works

Early impressions from Battlefield Labs PS5 pre-alpha build from community members confirm 60fps, no Tactical Sprint and more.

Chryzz231h ago

I got invited and for a pre alpha im already liking where this game is going, they might have something with this one fellas

_SilverHawk_2m ago(Edited 1m ago)

It's actually a good game. Its slower than recent battlefield titles but the gunplay is quite good. I like it. Hopefully I'm able to play the beta when its released but I haven't experienced anything i don't like other than a few bugs thats expected in pre-alpha

Ray Tracing vs. Path Tracing vs. Rasterization Explained

Rasterization is the predominant technique used for real-time rendering in video games. Despite the growing use of ray tracing for lighting, rasterization is still used to render the bulk of the scene. Rasterization is faster, efficient, and often produces near-realistic results with some caveats.
