Welcome to N4G Rewards

N4G Rewards is here! It's our way of saying thank you for those who come back, visit and engage with the awesome community here. So, how does N4G Rewards work? It’s simple, all you need to do is login and then be an active member of the site by commenting on posts and discussing with other members. Each time you do, you earn points - which are then put in a leaderboard. You can even earn points by submitting articles.

Each month, there will be a challenge - rewarding those who drive the most conversation, or for the most active members who have accrued the most points. The admins will set these challenges monthly. The winner of these challenges will be rewarded with an awesome prize, from consoles to games and more.

Admins, mods and anyone at BGFG are exempt from N4G Rewards, and will not be able to take part.

In time, we want N4G Rewards to evolve - not only giving our community a chance to win amazing prizes, but potentially using the points you accrue on the site to unlock discounts on your favourite games. More on that later. We’ll also send you the best deals, and reminders throughout the month as the reward nears.It’s never too late to get involved.

I quit the site earlier this year because of some frustration with the new BGFG management and the downhill direction N4G has been taking since the buyout.

...I have been lurking in the shadows with a new account recently though, just for the sake of being able to view pending stories. (this is literally my first comment since returning) I intended to remain a quiet reader, but I felt done with engaging here, especially in story submission & management.

This feels like a good temptation to become engaged again though, but I am also concerned when they state things like "...potentially using the points you accrue on the site to unlock discounts on your favourite games.", because it sounds like a license for them to become spammy with game product ads again. People weren't happy about it before, but will they be happy if our N4G points can be used towards the product spam? Time will tell.

I think it also promotes people to submit as much trash articles as they can, which isn't a good thing. Also, this is the first time I have even seen or heard of these comps, and I'm on every day, weird

It gives people who do nothing but comment on articles (looking at you Obscure) another reason to go on their tirades. IMO the contest should be between everyone who logs in and comments, but if you want to force people to comment, just say that the more you comment, the higher your chance to win.

Great idea but it have flaws as it favors those that are 24/7 posting inflammatory comments in defense/attack of other consoles. It should have a point deduction for inappropriate/trolling comments 🤷🏿

Trolls drive a lot of conversation. People are more inclined to address trolls if they perceive that moderation is not adequately addressing the trolling. Randomizing the winner from among the top 100 helps. What other safeguards are planned to keep this from encouraging trolling and becoming a troll reward program?

Right. If anything, I fear this is just going to push people to post a lot more worthless comments. I think people should be taken off the top 100 if they're marked as Spam or inappropriate a certain number of times within the month.

Please report trolling as you have and we will moderate them as needed. Trolls who are moderated can't earn points towards the reward while they are restricted or banned.

Does this mean in Total?

If so I don't think it will work, there's people on the Top 100 (Total) who haven't been on N4G for a long time but got their points years ago...that list won't fully change for a good few years as the new get past the old

This idea needs tweaking because there some here that are constantly posting flamebait, just to get people annoyed and riled up. Do they deserve to win anything? If so, think of backlash it'll create.

Getting rewarded to be rude or a troll isn't going to foster a good community. This idea would work better if the worst of the bunch received perma-bans first. But then again they can just keep making new free accounts endlessly.

So the only solution is to include the top 100 most liked posters, and not simply the top 100 most frequent posters.

This is not a popularity contest. And making new free accounts means spreading out comments and also much easier for us to find duplicate accounts as they are new, which would be immediately banned.

There's a big difference between spamming and just posting for the sake of posting. If people can post comments like "yes" or "I like this post" or "this is bad". That's not adding anything to the conversation, that's just posting because you want to accumulate these "points" and couldn't care less where the convo goes, just wanna farm.

I could just click on every single article on the front page, doesnt matter what it is and post atleast 1-2 comments, not to add anything at all to what's being said but just to have a comment there, saying nothing like "I agree" or "here is my post". Then just repeat that process each day, maybe a post with just "K".

Well, this will certainly be useful to make already extremely active members to be even more active, but I don't think this will make other users actually engage more, since if you don't already comment like crazy, it would feel like work to try to get into the top 100.

If it was up to me, I'd make every active member get a chance based on their number of comments and whatnot, but being in the top 50/100/200/500/1000 act like a multiplayer (x10,x5,x4,x3,x2).
Ex: If I comment once, I get one chance of being chosen. If somebody comments 1000 times, they'll have 1000 times more chance to be picked. And on top of that, if I am in the 501~1000 tier (x2 multiplier), my points (and consequently my chances of being picked) get doubled, if I'm in the top 50 my points gets multiplied by 10x.
This way, very active members still have a huge headstart, but other members still have chances to get it, making them comment more because they know every comment will count, instead of the current system where unless you comment a lot, you don't even have a chance - so for me, and I assume for most, has a feeling of "I have no chance of being in the top 100, so why bother commenting more?".

A few (many) years ago I got $100 from N4G. It did make me comment more from then on, at least for quite some time, since I learned the more I commented, the more chances I had to get a prize (N4G should have advertised that more - I only found out about it after I won, for example). But now, I know I won't be in the top 100 anyway, so I don't feel like changing my commenting habits.

Also, it's not clear if this will be limited to USA residents or what countries can participate...
