Final Fantasy 7 Remake's New Twist Was Just What The Story Needed

DualShockers Writes "The remake of Final Fantasy VII brought a classic story to a new audience, though there's no question it deviated from that original story quite a bit. One of the most controversial of these deviations was the fate of the character Zack Fair–specifically that he's revealed to be alive in the Remake when he was presumed dead in the original."

I don't know about 20, but I know Dragon Quest VIII, FFXII, and Persona 3 are my top 3.

No particular order. Not a huge JRPG guy, but these hit it home for me.

MadLad507d ago

Welp. Somehow this ended up in an entirely different article lol

gold_drake506d ago

haha yeh happened to me too, but i definitely agree with dq8 and persona 3 xD
not necessarily my top 3, but they're pretty good games

masterfox507d ago

If they managed to keep Aerith alive the whole story all the way to the end, SE did a good job for this Remake well at least for me, Intergrade for the PS5 was an stunning experience 10/10 no effing doubt!!!!, so glad I waited until the PS5 version :D

Rebel_Scum506d ago

She has to die so that others may live friend.

MrNinosan506d ago

There might be other ways, we don't know until the trilogy has reached it's end.
Right now, we don't even know about any meteor.

TricksterArrow506d ago (Edited 506d ago )

She already died, though. FFVII already happened, this is a new reality, a sequel, that is, admittedly, setting up for her death from the beggining (Cloud has a vision of her dying the moment he sees her, she says to him "do not fall in love with me" and "everyone dies eventually"), they can either follow through with it or not, in any case the elimination of the fates is hinting that ANYTHING is game now, including Zack being alive. We have to wait and see.

gold_drake506d ago

she has to die because of holy.
this whole "she has to live" is bs.

CrimsonWing69506d ago

Why would you want them to throw out one of the most important and impactful part of the story?

Yui_Suzumiya506d ago

Never played the original or remake of VII but a friend of mine did the voice of Aerith.. Briana White

Zack should stay dead. FFVII is about Cloud, not him, and resurrecting Zack from the grave completely misses the point of his character.

lucian229507d ago

You do know ff7re is a sequel right!? Not a remake. The name. Remake is more of what sephiroth is trying to do, that sephiroth is the one from after advent children. At this point sephiroth shouldn't even be active until cloud gets the black materia.

The game is completely a sequel.

goldwyncq506d ago

That doesn't change the fact that Zack should still stay dead. Resurrecting him is a mistake.

Hofstaderman506d ago

I like to think of the Remake as an alternate timeline.

dumahim506d ago

That's what's throwing me off about all this. Zack is alive? Did I miss something? It seemed to me at the end of Remake something happened and kind of multiversed themselves to a different reality. Zack being alive during the events of the games seems problematic.

shinoff2183507d ago

I simply disagree with the author. While I do like ff7 remake. I'd much prefer if they just would've left it alone and did a real remake and just updated the graphics. Maybe throw in a few new things but not change the whole game. I also prefer the old battle system. Not the in your face action stuff

MrNinosan506d ago

You mean a remaster?
You can use mods on PC to achieve that.

I would've been disappointed if it was the exact same game with just better graphics and voiceacting.

shinoff2183506d ago

Do those mods make it look like ff7 remake graphically. Mods don't as far as I've found so naw your wrong dog.

Good for you then

CrimsonWing69506d ago

@MrNinosan

I think he means a Remake like the Last of Us Part 1 Remake or Demon’s Souls Remake or Shadow of the Colossus Remake. Where it’s a 1:1 Remake but built from the ground up.

shinoff2183506d ago

That's pretty much where I was at with my statement.

Like I even admitted I do like what they've done. I'm a Sci fi nut so it fits my interests. Just don't like the actiony battle system. I can play it for sure. I'd gladly take what they're doing but as ff7 being one of my favorite games. I was 12 13 when this came out originally. This i mean the og ff7. I'd love to see a 1 to 1 remake.

ShwaaMan507d ago

Strongly disagree. I loved the game EXCEPT for that, and I am very concerned where they might take it. Totally unnecessary, don’t ruin a good thing.

MrNinosan506d ago

Final Fantasy VII is still around and won't go anywhere.
If you don't like the sequels, there is no need to play them.

MadLad505d ago (Edited 505d ago )

People wanted a remake for a long time. Why is it weird there's a large amount of people that were unhappy that it was more a reboot than anything?
I don't like the new action based combat. I don't like them changing around the story. I just wanted a modern looking version of the original game with nice visuals.

A lot of people feel the same. Even if the game is well regarded in general.

senorfartcushion506d ago

It’s not a remake of FF7. The game’s title is called remake I.e “remake the past.”

goldwyncq506d ago

It's both. They want to tell a new story under the guise of a remake without changing most of what already existed before. Square already confirmed that all locations and major plot points in the original FFVII would still be covered.

KingKelloggTheWH506d ago

Same boat. The attempts at adding a twist where just not good

Square Enix Already "Hard At Work" On Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3

Development on the next game in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy might be further ahead than we thought. In a video discussing the series, the project leads say they are "hard at work" on the finale, right after launching Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

This comment was made by Remake and Rebirth director Tetsuya Nomura, who says that he and the scenario writer Kazushige Nojima are already working on the next game. Better yet, composer Nobuo Uematsu says that he'd be "honoured" to return for the finale, despite previously fearing that he doesn't have the "strength" for another game.

So i take it they won't be fixing there last game with the visual/movement problems.

Just keep tossing them out

Barlos15d ago

Nothing worse than a grammar nazi

_Decadent_Descent15d ago

@Barlos

Nothing worse than those that let others keep on making a fool of themselves and say nothing to correct them. That's why they continue to keep making those mistakes.

Pyrofire9515d ago

I appreciate that many more people are agreeing with the grammar correction and disagreeing with Barlos.

yikes talk about nit picking and strawmanning

roadkillers15d ago

This is something most crtics bring up... but they still gave the game 9+ score. As big of a deal as you are making it, a VAST majority of players were just fine with the graphics compared to waht they got with Rebirth

DarXyde15d ago

Dude complains about everything.

I haven't finished the game yet, but I'm having a blast.

Just negative for the sake of being negative.

dumahim15d ago

While I'd guess they're probably not going to do much else about it at this point, just because they're working on the sequel doesn't mean they can't have someone working on the visual issues for Rebirth. Likewise, it also doesn't mean they're not working on a DLC for it either.
Either way, I'd put money on it that they'll update the game for PS5 Pro.

Exvalos15d ago

Keep up the hatred fanboy, and we will keep playing great games

GoodGuy0916d ago

Sweet....and hopefully can actually answer all the wtfs rather than giving us more questions that has been happening in these games lol. And I hope they just end the game properly instead of trying to milk VII even more. I'd very much like to see remakes of other FF titles on the same level.

-Foxtrot16d ago

God I hope this is it for VII

They’ve milked it far too much over the years, I mean Wikipedia has its own VII specific page because there’s so much media for it

It’s time for other FF games to get some love

gold_drake15d ago

im all for it, remake and rebirth were fantastic, especially rebirth, my god wat a brilliant game.

i mean, we had 16 and 14 still be a thing.
and 9 is getting a remake too, apparently

FinalFantasyFanatic15d ago

As much as I love FF7, they have really milked it to death, 2 compilations of FF7 which includes novels, games, mobile games, movies and animation...

They really need to put more effort into newer FF games.

-Foxtrot15d ago

@FinalFantasyFanatic

Yeah I mean look at it man, why does anyone want it milked even more when other FF games are starving for attention.

https://i.ibb.co/3mT2TRc/12...

Furesis16d ago

Well when you have Tetsuya Nomura hands on something, that is what you get. Whether you like it or not that's another thing.
I don't think they should make remakes like this anymore, and they won't that's what they said also. It takes too long and it just fragments the game too much for my taste. And i'd prefer a more 1 to 1 remake with maybe a slightly smaller budget so that it would actually be made in a reasonable time rather than these 10+ year projects.

gold_drake15d ago

nomura doesnt ely that much of a role in the trilogy, its Nojima u need to blame ha.

as for the og, there are mods u can use for that.

we'll never get an updated og game. it would take them years to finish it, even if its 1:1

fr0sty15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

nobody will buy a 1:1 remake, they already know what is going to happen exactly... and you can't properly remake a 20+ year old game 1:1 anyway, so much needs to be done to bring it to modern standards, that you have to change some things.

Michiel198915d ago

@frosty that's the same thing the execs at blizzard said about WoW classic and here we are. You think you do, but you don't

dumahim15d ago

They did a Remaster for Crisis Core, which seemed near impossible due to a licensing issue not too long ago. I wouldn't be surprised if they do the same for Dirge of Cerberus before part 3.

I do worry what they'll do with part 3 though. They're not just going to abandon the nonsense. Rebirth was like 98% fantastic, but those whispers moments and their take on what is one of the most iconic scenes in video games ever just upsets me.

Hofstaderman15d ago

80 hours into rebirth and loving it. Bring it on Square.

gold_drake15d ago

i had 118h at the end. with everything done minues the queens blood stuff. and i absolutely loved every minute of it

Hofstaderman15d ago

I just want to say bugger mog house level 6. Will return to that later

Shiro17315d ago

Only one thing I hated it and it was the relic hunt for the sand spot next to the flying saucer. I hated that mini game for the relic. Killing those cactus with Aerith was annoying.

fr0sty15d ago

I like the remakes better than the original that I grew up playing back in the 90s... they are doing it right. And that soundtrack... I still jam the Gongaga theme all the time.
