Jason Buchwitz, Turok's Lead Environment Artist, writes:

"Seeing as how much of the game takes place in a jungle, we were faced with the obvious challenge of creating lush dense spaces for the player to explore, giving off a sense of endless, creepy rainforest that went on for miles in all directions. Environments heavy on plant life can always be taxing on the render pipe, so we needed to do every trick in the book to maintain high detail around the player but still be able to run at target frame rate."
