Nobody is. People play what they like and know, and what their friends are playing. So many disillusioned gamers and even publishers; reviews mean very little.
advertising and word of mouth is powerful, not random reviews nobody cares about.

Some Metacritic added reviews are not written by professionals. I do agree with a majority of the big name reviews but I guess only you can say if you like something or not as its down to personal taste, I enjoyed Duke Nukem but I don’t like Assassin's Creed.

It helps when you know the gaming tastes of the person you're asking. With that said, it's probably best to rely on your friends' opinions of games. Professional reviewers can have their... reasons for giving certain games certain grades, and random gamers could have all kinds of biases.
