PlayDevil: Saint Seiya Sanctuary Battle Review

Is this Japanese PS3 import worth picking up for Western gamers?

Here is a snippet:

"In addition to the good looking cut scenes the graphical style of the game is very impressive indeed with everything presented in a very colourful anime style. The character design fares a little worse as the lead character simply does not live up to the well designed arenas and levels and despite Seiya being instantly recognisable his actual movements have the feeling that his is somewhat floating rather than walking/running."

Dusty Cartridge: Saint Seiya: Sanctuary Battle Review

Not often enough do we get to experience the sheer pandemonium abundant in the action RPG genre. It seems that dominant genres such as shooters and MMOs are somewhat overshadowing the lesser explored genres, which may be narrowing the market a little. Namco Bandai is hoping to change this notion with Saint Seiya: Sanctuary Battle, their anime styled beat ‘em up PS3 exclusive by developers Dimps Corporation.

Saint Seiya PS3 listed by ESRB

Gematsu: "Saint Seiya: Sanctuary Battle may be coming to North America, if the ESRB are anything to go by. The organization recently assigned a “Teen” rating to the game."

jc485734378d ago

well, if that's true, then this is going to be the first Saint Seiya game to be released in America.

Baka-akaB4378d ago

A shame since it's a truly awful game . But then again there has never been a good saint seiya game yet unfortunately

Simon_Brezhnev4378d ago

I didnt know it was that bad. I thought it played like DWs.

Baka-akaB4378d ago (Edited 4378d ago )

It does play like Dw , but there are various degrees of quality within such series .

This one is the lowest of the lowest . And usually at worst anim based Dynasty game are quite decent graphically , so you could usually count on that fanservice aspect .

This time no , we got truly badly modelised characters (early ps2 level , only hd) , even within the cutscenes , and inconsistant framerates

FinaLXiii4378d ago (Edited 4378d ago )

it may be the worse anime game of the year so far but isnt necessarily a bad one either its fun to play and it as enough fan service for you there.

wait for decent a price drop.

jc485734378d ago (Edited 4378d ago )

I'm surprised. IMO, two of the best anime game to me are Fist of the North Star and the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm games. I know some people hate FOTNS, but I think they think an "ok" job.

Baka-akaB4378d ago

True but at the risk of sounded obsessed , FOTNS wasnt as badly done , and the concept of the game kinda fit the manga and anime's vibe .

Tuxedo_Mask4378d ago (Edited 4378d ago )

I like the Dynasty Warriors: Gundam games.

Edit: But then again they're the only Dynasty Warriors games I've played this gen.

Baka-akaB4378d ago (Edited 4378d ago )

Meh i think it's that bad . it's a dissservice to the anime with it's horrible realisation and boring gameplay (and that's coming from a one piece musou , warrior orochi and general musou fan) . It only covering the first big arc is only adding salt to the injuries .

Immersion is close to nil , as the dynasty warrior setting doesnt suit saint seiya at all . Most fights are a 1v1 affair and not about the heroes crushing down waves of anonymous foes "X" . Your characters are even surprinsingly weak , wasting lots of time on plain grunts , wich is not a good immersion factor .

Graphics are awful with plastic looking characters , framerate isnt even consistent , there is no nline , coop is very limited .

If you love Saint Seiya manga series or animes , dont do the franchise a disservice by sending a message that it's ok for them to produce such crap , and for you to buy it .

Fist of the north star/Hokuto no Ken , wasnt great , but at least it was a total package of fanservice , suited the franchise , and was done a whole lot better than that game

FinaLXiii4378d ago (Edited 4378d ago )

Like i said, a decent price drop is enough and it really doesnt matter if it feels like a badly made PS2 game in HD because fans want it anyways.

Also, fun is the only factor that counts in this game even if it doesnt feel like its supposed to in fan service terms it still presists being fun if you enjoy the series.

Im a fan and ill get it for the right price 15 bucks tops.

You may consider this game a disservice but i think otherwise because having this simple minded game is better than having no game at all.

Hopefully a sequell will show up and fixes the main issues that reside in this game.

Baka-akaB4378d ago (Edited 4378d ago )

Obviously i just dont find the game fun , on top of it being badly done .

And i still think no game is better than a bad one .

There have been 3 crappy games already for the franchise from bandai , it's time it got the proper care and respect other franchises had . If you didnt notice , i'm also a huge Saint Seiya fan .

I dont believe for a sec a sequel will fix anything there . The sequel to the ps2 fighting game didnt fix squat . They didnt care about doing a good game to begin with and the same team , Dimps still doesnt care about the franchise , after 3 games .

Review: Saint Seiya: Sanctuary Battle (darkzero)

"I'm quite surprised a game like Saint Seiya made it over to the UK. The anime of Saint Seiya was popular in places like Italy, Spain and France, but it never had chance to grow big in the UK and wasn't translated into English until 2003. That might not sound so shocking till you understand that the anime first started in 1986 in Japan, meaning it started the same year as the original DragonBall anime. Namco already has a popular anime franchise that goes by the name of Naruto. Both Saint Seiya and the latest Naruto game were released in March, but Saint Seiya has gone unnoticed in the hectic month of releases know as March Madness. Even so, I’m just happy that Namco Bandai are giving lesser known games a chance over here, since so many publishers often lock them in their country of origin."
