"Mature" games need to be about more than sex and cussing | VGW

VGW: With today’s console release of The Witcher 2, outlets are focusing on the “dark,” “mature” nature of the story. Having played through it (look for our review soon), I can agree the game certainly deserves a mature rating. Gamers get to see a whole lotta Triss, and the language isn’t exactly kid-friendly. But is it necessarily a “mature” game? On that note, are most of the games we call “mature” merely mature-rated?

Having just sex and cursing seems immature to me

Edit: In games, of course....lol

zeal0us2377d ago (Edited 2377d ago )

In a M-rated game it don't seem immature to me, but if you're playing an M rated game just for the sex and profanity then you are wasting your time. You would be better off watching porn or play an sex game, if that's all you want.

If Mature games had more sex in then more than likely it will receive an A-rate from the ESRB. When that happen most retailers will reject stocking it.

Where is the sex in modern M rated games? By that I mean, sex, not the stupid cutaways you see in Mass Effect 3. Anywhere other than the Witcher 2? Not really.

He's just talking about sexual content, I think, which is far more abundant than just sex. Also, games that give you enough suggestions that sex is going on don't need to show it on screen (a la mass effect).

I do agree, though, that games need to start handling genuinely mature topics more often. By that I mean that there are games that do handle mature topics, but not many of them.

While not a revelation to those more in-tune with the specifics of game design, it's something that some developers need to have drilled into their head.

Like, say, the Kane and Lynch developers.
F***, ***k, f***ity, f***. That's in every other line. Not even pirates use the f word that often....not even middle school boys....not even 13 year old pirate boys. That's lazy writing. And it's gotten so bad, that people who edit scripts have a term for it....def***ification. I WISH I were making that up.

"We called this process 'Def***ification.' We shared the script to discuss some other points and people couldn't believe how much work we'd done and how much better it was. Sure, if you're making a game rated 'M' it allows you to use rougher language, but having the opportunity doesn't mean that you're required to use it"

Another example would be the thugs in Splinter Cell: Conviction. I call them Cuss-bots, simply because their repetitive cussing seemed annoyingly robotic. To make it worse, you could not lower the volume on the voices because there is no option in the main menu to do so. This cheapens the experience as it were a bag glitch of sorts.

SilentNegotiator2377d ago

"Hey, master assassin that I can't see, and probably has his sights aimed at my head! F*** you!"

lol, that's pretty much the funny point that the Zero Punctuation review said about Conviction. Not a spectacular game in general, I'd say.

I find a lot of cussing, not just in games, but in movies and music extremely immature and unnecessary. Don't understand why some people feel the need to say the f word every 2 seconds. It doesn't make u a bad ass, just a plain douche bag

SilentNegotiator2377d ago (Edited 2377d ago )

And before someone doles out the "You can't handle it" or "you're a prude" claim, let me say this:

If you repeated ANY word as often as the F word is used in some films and games, it would get just as old and be just as poor of writing. And hey, I would just straight up use the word (in context of this discussion) if it weren't against N4G policy, but I understand and respect that policy.

And sex scenes that don't serve a serious purpose come off as gratuitous and intended for people to get off to.

clarkjudo2377d ago

I totally agree with you Fel08. Great acting or singing is to be able to express yourself with out taking the easy and cheap way out by relying on cussing to get your point across.

needs to be more like the witcher 2, thats mature
