GNT: Digital Dilema: Why A Digital Future Might Not Be So Bright

GNT: The Internet is a wonderful thing. It allows people free access to the hardest hardcore pornography, it offers access to every piece of information ever, allows people to stay in touch over continents, allows people to shoot each other in Call of Duty, and perhaps most importantly, allows people to upload funny pictures and videos of cats and dogs. Physical books are 90 percent of the industry
Physical movies are 90 percent of the industry
physical music is the lowest with around 50 percent
physical games are over 75

a digital future means more control over consumers. right now consumers can influence pricing and producers dont like that. if a game is horrible the second hand market will drop the price because so many people return the game, which in turn forces the new copies to lower the price to stay competitive. without this consumers either take whats given or they dont get it.

its something bad that i see for a digital future, less options always mean consumers are less able to demand value for their dollar

@ Catfrog, I fully agree with you and was going to post something very similar. A digital future leaves the consumer with no rights.

I agree with what this article is saying. I'm a collector myself and like having physical copies of what I buy. I like knowing that in ten years time I can dig out an old game, dust it off, boot it up and enjoy some old times.

I have an android tablet with Kindle on it and do download and read eBooks, but like the writer mentions, pricing is far from ideal. Old books are sometimes priced nicely and PD stuff is cool to be able to download, but I can often get the physical copy of newer books for quite a bit less than their digital copies go for.

I've been around enough to know that there are just as many people who don't want an all digital future as there are that do, so I think and hope that the future will continue to support both.


Many of these antidigital arguments seem to touch on issues that are valid but not the most serious.

Yes I understand that download speeds can be lower in some areas of the world. Yes I understand that a physical box feels nice. Yet most of these articles fail to dig deeper into the root of the problem(s) of a digital medium.

I am highly skeptical of the entire digital concept. Why haven't they offered a physical disc as a backup through their digital offerings either automatically or upon request? Why are game saves locked yet available through a service? Why are backups on my PS3 limited to noncopyrighted material? Why do my copyrighted backups need a server in order to complete the process of a backup and a recovery?

I think the main purpose of digital distribution is to make everything temporary. Right now I can understand how Gamestop abuses their consumers. Yet I can find no sympathy for the developers because they will eventually do the same thing. Can you imagine having to buy the same games of the past over and over again everytime they release a new console? All they have to do is rename their online service every generation and sell you the same title over again. They are doing it already with the HD collections which are already replacements to backward compatability. Yet people think the developers are the victims....when all they are whining about is not being able to rob the consumer exclusively.
