Is the Death of Console Gaming a Myth?

Online Pass. On-disc DLC. A new generation of systems that block used and rented games. Developer closures. Retail closures. The emergence and success of mobile and social games . . . it's easy to look at the current climate and wonder if this is the beginning of the end for the console generation.

Yet promising trends are emerging that might prove that the future has never looked brighter, leading nJoystic's Steve Gibson to wonder if the death of the console is little more than a myth.

I think people enjoy portable gaming and it seems like apps are getting to be the most popular choice lately. Through all the speculation, I still see no need to worry. I think everyone will have doubts about forms of this industry every once in a while.

I think it all comes down to this: What we see isn't the death of the console. It's portable gaming finally reaching it's potential.
